Araci foi fundada por José Ferreira de Carvalho, em 1812, e era conhecida como a cidade do Raso, antes da emancipação pertenceu a cidade de Serrinha. Araci fica a aproximadamente 210 quilômetros de Salvador. Sua área territorial é de 1524 km².. A Cidade se originou na sede da Fazenda Raso, onde foi formando-se um povoado em torno de uma capela. A fazenda então localizada no município de Serrinha de onde, mais tarde, foi desmembrada, tornando-se um distrito chamado Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Raso.. O município se desmembrou pelo fato de estar se desenvolvendo na agropecuária e no comércio e podendo sustentar suas despesas. Isso ocorreu em 13 de dezembro de 1890. Em 1904, o município passou a se chamar Araci, mas foi extinto em 1931 após decair em seus trabalhos sustentáveis. A partir da extinção, Araci foi novamente anexada a Serrinha.. Em 14 de novembro de 1956, Araci foi restaurada e elevada à cidade se separando novamente de Serrinha.
