Kearney Education Fund was founded in December 2013 by the Kearney family of Gould, Arkansas and Rankin Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Gould, On May 25, 2016, the Rankin-Kearney Education Fund announced its first scholarship recipients. Scholarships went to, three students - two at Star City, and one at Dumas High School. . . The Rankin-Kearney Scholarship Fund awarded $1000 academic scholarships to Mia R. Scott, of Gould, Arkansas who graduated from Dumas High School and Jalyn P. Ward of Star City, who graduated from Star City High School. Terica D. Brown received a $250 Essay Writing Award for outstanding composition. Students from Lincoln and Desha counties were invited to apply. Selection criteria was based on grade point average, community service, and essay composition. . . The Scholarship Fund is named for the late Thomas James Kearney and his wife Ethel V. Kearney, and their church Rankin Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where their membership remained for over 60 years. lifetime members of Rankin Chapel church, Thomas "TJ" Kearney died in December 2013; his wife, Ethel, in March 1982. They were cotton sharecroppers in Lincoln County for more than 75 years. Their legacy includes contributions to their community, their church, and their family. . . The couple had 19 children, 17 of whom were raised in Lincoln county, and all of whom attended Rankin Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. The couple were recognized by President Clinton, the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, and Johnson Publishing Company for their outstanding contributions to their family and the community. In spite of their poverty, 18 of their 19 children were college graduates, two worked for a U.S. President, several worked for Arkansas Governors and served as judges and attorneys. . . For over 40 years the Kearney family has held the annual Kearney Family Reunion in Gould, which includes a Sunday Thanksgiving Service at Rankin Chapel Church – which TJ Kearney and his family called, their “second home.” .
