Detailed description is . L’université Rennes-II est, avec l’université Rennes 1, l’une des deux universités rennaises. Elle a été créée en 1969, issue de l’ancienne faculté de lettres de l’université de Rennes dont l’origine remonte à la création de l’université ducale de Bretagne en 1460 à Nantes.Son campus principal est situé au nord ouest de Rennes dans le quartier de Villejean, comme l’autre campus situé à La Harpe. Une antenne, qu’elle partage avec l’université de Rennes 1, est située depuis 1991 à St-Brieuc sur le campus Mazier. Elle dispose également d'une implantation sur le campus de Ker Lann à travers l'un de ses laboratoires.L’université est spécialisée dans les langues (étrangères et bretonne), les sciences humaines, les sciences sociales, le sport, les arts et la communication. Au total, elle forme (janvier 2016), répartis dans ses trois campus, dont étudiants étrangers. C'est le plus grand pôle de recherche et d’enseignement dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales dans l’ouest de la France.Les activités de l’université sont visibles au-delà de ses murs, notamment par les Presses universitaires de Rennes dont elle est à l’origine, par les activités du PRES Université européenne de Bretagne dont elle est cofondatrice, mais aussi par ses activités culturelles liées à celles de la ville de Rennes, notamment par l’accueil de festivals, ou par les activités de l'auditorium du Tambour.
