Die Anfänge des Gebäudes reichen bis in das Mittelalter um 1250 zurück und seine Geschichte ist so vielfältig und interessant wie die Stadt selbst. Ursprünglich als Torhaus zum Kirchhof bzw. Friedhof, wurde der Römer ab 1723 auch zu Wohnzwecken genutzt und diente unter anderem der Witwe des Besitzers von Gut Vorlage Johann Itell von Groten als Alterssitz. . . Ab 1828 wurde das Gebäude an Schneidermeister, Uhrmacher und Schankwirte verpachtet bis er 1850 vom Amt Lengerich gekauft wurde. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt diente der Römer der Stadt als Rathaus, Gefängnis sowie Feuerwehrgeräteunterstand. . . Ab 1905 war der Römer Klassenraum der Amtsrektoratsschule und wurde überdies als Amtsarchiv der Stadt genutzt. . . Heute als Gaststätte und Restaurant "in aller Munde", ist er nach umfangreichen Renovierungsarbeiten ein Ort der Ruhe und kultivierten Gastlichkeit im "Herzen von Lengerich" (Stadtarchiv Lengerich).
