Gli anni della sua gioventù non sono molto diversi da quelli di molti giovani di oggi, tenendo conto dei 15 secoli che ci separano da lui. Assecondando le ambizioni dei genitori, Patrizio e Monica, che pur appartenendo alla classe medio-bassa vogliono che il loro primogenito diventi qualcuno, Agostino intraprende gli studi superiori, laureandosi infine rètore (professore "in lettere") a Cartagine. Qui, in una città (capitale dell'Africa romana) per metà ancora pagana, Agostino scopre gli amori facili e gli ozi giovanili riempiti di avventure conturbanti. . . Abbandona del tutto gli insegnamenti cristiani che la "vecchia" madre gli aveva istillato da bambino, aderendo ad una setta pseudo-religiosa in voga, i manichei. Si accompagna con una ragazza, dalla quale ha un bambino, Adeodato. Donne, carriera e denaro diventano tutto il suo orizzonte in quegli anni "scellerati" della sua giovinezza, che lasciano Agostino in un vuoto profondo e in un progressivo, angosciante non senso della vita. . . Nel 383, a 29 anni, inizia la seconda fase della sua vita. Mentre consolida la sua carriera di rètore trasferendosi prima a Roma e poi a Milano, presso la corte imperiale, imponendosi all'attenzione per le sue doti oratorie, inizia un lento e straziante processo di riflessione su se stesso, su quello che è, su quello che ha lasciato, su quello che lo aspetta. Processo che si conclude felicemente nel 387, quando a Milano, insieme al figlio Adeodato, al fratello Navigio, all'amico Alipio e ad altri discepoli, riceve il battesimo e decide il "santo proposito" di dedicarsi completamente a Dio, rinunciando alla carriera e al matrimonio. . . Ritornato in Africa nel 388, conduce per tre anni vita ritirata presso la casa paterna di Tagaste, insieme ai suoi amici, mettendo le basi di quello che sarà poi il suo specifico stile di vita religiosa. Divenuto sacerdote nel 391 e vescovo nel 395, si impegna per tutta la vita a costituire comunità religiose maschili e femminili, di laici e di sacerdoti. . . Muore nella sua Tagaste circondata dai Vandali il 28 agosto del 430, dopo 40 anni di intensissimo e fecondo servizio episcopale. Le sue intuizioni filosofiche, letterarie e teologiche ne fanno un genio del cristianesimo e dell'umanità intera. Le sue aspirazioni e la sua esperienza spirituale, trasmesse soprattutto con la sua "Regola", hanno segnato e continuano a segnare il cammino ad una schiera innumerevole di uomini e donne, affascinati dalla sua figura e trascinati dal suo esempio.
