Lange tijd was Westerwolde een tamelijk geïsoleerd gebied, omsloten door veengebieden en moerassen slechts ontsloten door een aantal begaanbare zandruggen (zgn ‘tangen’). Op en aan deze zandruggen, vooral die noord-zuid liepen, vormden zich de huidige dorpen en gehuchten zoals Sellingen, Vlagtwedde, Laude, Ter Borg en Ter Wisch. Rond 1150 wordt Sellingen in de oude archieven genoemd. Urnen-vondsten, stenen bijlen en speerpunten wijzen echter op een voor-christelijke bewoning rond Sellingen. Het is een typisch es- of brink-dorp, met een vroeg gotisch kerkje, dat waarschijnlijk uit het begin uit de 14e eeuw dateert. Het dorp ligt ingeklemd tussen twee essen die het z’n specifieke karakter geven. Het dorp kreeg pas naam, toen het gemeentehuis in 1890 van Vlagtwedde naar Sellingen verhuisde, het geografische midden van de gemeente. Het water stond Sellingen vaak tot de lippen. Haast letterlijk, want toen het Ruiten-A-kanaal nog niet gegraven was, stond het oostelijk laagland bij Zuidveld dikwijls onder water.
