Goal of the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition.
1.
Reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse..

Long-term outcome: Community-level change will contribute to reductions in alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drug use among youth.

The Shelby County Drug Free Coalition was founded in 1998 and works to provide education to parents, youth and other adults to empower the community to prevent youth from using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs..
.
The coalition has accomplished:.
• Providing over 65 expert presenters through our Speaker’s Bureau.
• Researched, designed and created the SCDFC website to educate and provide valuable information and resources.
• Created social media campaigns to educate and to provide awareness with relevant information including: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and You Tube videos.
• Host to bi-monthly coalition meetings with expert guest speakers to train, educate and inform .
• Participated in prevention programs: ATI, Conquest, Family Day-ALFRA, Drunk/Drugged/Distracted Driving presentations, Every 15 Minutes, Bullying, Underage Drinking/Parents Hosting, Prescription/OTC Abuse, Nah, I’m Good, Red Ribbon Week, MADD, NDAFW, Too Good for Drugs, Life Skills, SADD, Zero Addiction, SAM, FOCUS, Drug Education Council, First Priority, Joshua Project, The Truth About Drugs.
• Partnering with SCS, PCS, and ACS systems to promote prevention in classrooms, P.E.
classes, health classes, peer-helper programs, faculty presentations, PD for sponsors/Counselors, Drunk/Drugged/ Distracted Driving presentations, Conquest programs, registration bags, Parenting Day workshops, Parenting Summits on Substance Abuse, Red Ribbon Week, created Safe Campus signs, and on-going resources shared on all drugs, bullying, suicide prevention, underage drinking, social media apps, etc.

• Launched “Speak Up” tip line campaign with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for anonymous reporting.
• Developed community awareness campaign to prevent prescription/OTC medication abuse, presentations to the Senior Citizen Centers, and delivered posters with the locations of the permanent take back boxes.
• Delivered prescription easel pads with prescription abuse warnings to pharmacies and doctors’ offices.
• Partnering with the Alabama Department of Public Health to promote Smoke Free Communities .
• Developed signage for Tobacco Free Zones for schools, parks, and all Athletic Fields in every community.
• Created and delivered stickers for prevention of alcohol sales to minors in convenience stores throughout SC.
• In the past, the coalition has purchased and designed many resources to educate and inform: billboards, banners, posters, signs, ads, tip line cards, tip line posters, athletic field signage, school signs, brochures, prescription pads, registration bags, pens, and cups.
