Station Tilburg werd geopend op 5 oktober 1863. Het was het eindpunt van de eerste door de Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS) geopende spoorlijn, Breda – Tilburg (Lijn E).Nabij het station van Tilburg lag een van de hoofdwerkplaatsen van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen waar het groot onderhoud aan de locomotieven plaatsvond. Het complete gebied staat tegenwoordig bekend als de Spoorzone.Voor de personeelsleden van het station die gesneuveld zijn tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog hangt er in de stationshal een Plaquette voor het Gevallen Spoorwegpersoneel met zes namen. In de werkplaats was er eveneens één te vinden met 6 namen.Het huidige stationsgebouw werd gebouwd in 1965 naar een ontwerp van architect Koen van der Gaast. Het station bestaat voornamelijk uit een hoge, opmerkelijk vormgegeven 'zwevende' overkapping, waaronder de perrons en de restauratie liggen.
