Detailed description is . Since December 2011, Internet censorship has become a hot topic in India. But online freedom of speech has been under threat much longer. Since the late 1990s, there have been instances of online censorship, often for reasons that were not very clear. Moreover, when a legislative framework was put into place for online censorship, this was used to further increase the range and kinds of restrictions on free speech that were considered acceptable, rather than to keep a tight lid on censorship as would have been appropriate in a democracy. . . One such piece of legislation can still be stopped if you take action now. The Intermediaries Guidelines Rules, that govern the liability of Internet intermediaries such as Google, Facebook, and your Internet service provider, and force intermediaries to take down content on grounds that go well beyond what the Constitution allows, without providing any mechanism for recourse to the owner of the content. The rules were made by the Government, but Parliament can demand the government go back to the drawing board, and start all over again.. . Save your Voice is a campaign connecting a wide variety of individuals and organisations that have been working towards getting Parliament to do just that.
