Its vision is a democratic Ukraine with a diverse, thriving and sustainable civil society that supports its own cultural, educational, social and human rights initiatives.
It was originally founded in 1999 in Luhansk as an alternative to the official writer’s union in the city.
The organization’s focus has evolved over the years to take on a youth and grass-roots based approach.
STAN seeks to unite writers, philosophers, artists, journalists, teachers, social activists and student youth.
They publish poems and reports; organize street actions, performances, and concerts in order to push government and society.
It was legally registered in 2008 as an NGO in Luhansk.
In 2014 the organization fled Luhansk as the military conflict escalated and the security situation deteriorated.
STAN has since relocated to the city of Ivano-Frankivsk on the opposite side of Ukraine, but continues to operate within their mission.
In addition, STAN has added the focus of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ukraine to their agenda.
In the past the organization has worked with the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, National Endowment for Democracy, US Embassy in Ukraine, European Cultural Foundation, Goethe Institut, International Renaissance Foundation, European Commission, British Council and others.
It currently has regional coordinators in multiple oblasts around the country.

Youth Organization STAN has itself become an IDP organization, as it was forced to leave its home in Luhansk.
Similar activities that STAN has conducted in the last few year, such as Dialogue and Reconciliation project among different regions of Ukraine that has been funded by the National Endowment for Democracy and recently renewed earlier this year.
This project included training youth about tolerance and discrimination from different regions, which included many IDP participants.
Youth Organization STAN has organized, coordinated and helped facilitated a program on entrepreneurship for youth from eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.
STAN staff higher education qualifications with finance, management, English, pedagogy and digital media.
Additionally, STAN has extensive experience and knowledge relating to event management, human rights, facilitation, youth empowerment, mediation, research and report creation..

Working in cultural and human rights sphere Youth Organization-STAN is an active member of certain networks:.
- Pan-European network of cultural managers TANDEM, created by European Cultural Foundation and MitOst (membership from 2011);.
- Ukrainian Diversity Network created by International Organization for Migration (membership from 2012);.
- Ukraine Lab, network of cultural managers, educators and business innovators, created by NGO «Insha Osvita/Another education» and MitOst (membership from 2014);.
- Active Citizens Ukraine, network of trainers and facilitators created by British Council (membership from 2015);.
- Ukrainian National Platform, created by Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (membership from 2017)
