In this course, students will explore various aspects of the 1863 military campaign to capture Chattanooga, from its planning and execution, to the fateful Battle of Chickamauga and its place in public and historical memory. . . "The River of Death" is a translation of the Cherokee name attributed to Chickamauga Creek, a small stream that runs through the site of the battle and gives it its name. Stories abound as to the actual meaning of "Chickamauga," though "The River of Death" seems particularly fitting given the bloody nature of this battle.. .
