The lectures will be held at 1100 hrs on Saturdays and Sundays in the Cotton University campus, Panbazar. The precise room will be announced later depending on the number of participants. A cluster of disciplines seeks to understand human beings and their cultures in all their complexities. This summer weekend course of 16 contact hours (one credit) seeks to interweave insights from classical sociological and anthropological texts into a story about what makes us human. Our sociality is integral to our humanness and the course will take us through the complex processes of socialization and construction of gender identities to forms of interaction and social relationships, solidarity and collective consciousness, culture and symbols, labor and the material production of society.. . . Themes:. . Being Human – Artifacts and Built Environment, Language & Symbols, Learned Knowledge Systems Socialization & Gender Identity. . Relating to the World – Social Action & Social Relationships, Society as a Moral Order. Culture – Definition of Culture, Culture as a System of Symbols, Symbols & Meanings. The Social Life of Things – Material Culture, Exchange, Fetishism, Gifts and Commodities. . All required reading will be summarized on the power-point presentations..
