Detailed description is This course will focus on understanding society through theories and ideas in sociology and social anthropology Course number: EXM004. Course name: Understanding Society: Themes from Sociology and Anthropology. Resource person: Rowena Robinson, IIT Guwahati. . The course starts on 2014 June 07. The lectures will be held at 1100 hrs on Saturdays and Sundays in the Cotton University campus, Panbazar. The precise room will be announced later depending on the number of participants. Please register even if you wish to attend from the second weekend.. ====================================================. . . A cluster of disciplines seeks to understand human beings and their cultures in all their complexities. This summer weekend course of 16 contact hours (one credit) seeks to interweave insights from classical sociological and anthropological texts into a story about what makes us human. Our sociality is integral to our humanness and the course will take us through the complex processes of socialization and construction of gender identities to forms of interaction and social relationships, solidarity and collective consciousness, culture and symbols, labor and the material production of society.. . . Themes:. . Being Human – Artifacts and Built Environment, Language & Symbols, Learned Knowledge Systems Socialization & Gender Identity. . Relating to the World – Social Action & Social Relationships, Society as a Moral Order. Culture – Definition of Culture, Culture as a System of Symbols, Symbols & Meanings. The Social Life of Things – Material Culture, Exchange, Fetishism, Gifts and Commodities. . All required reading will be summarized on the power-point presentations.. For further reading you may access (NB – Faculty will not provide these readings):. . 1. Peter Berger, Invitation to Sociology: A Humanistic Perspective (1963). 2. Anthony Giddens, Capitalism and Modern Social Theory (1971). 3. Clifford Geertz, The Interpretation of Cultures (1973). 4. Pierre Bourdieu, Outline of a Theory of Practice (1977). . . . Cotton University students can take this course on credit, in which case all CCSU rules of evaluation will apply. Certificates of participation will be given to those with at least 75 per cent attendance.. . A nominal charge of Rs. 500/- is being charged to cover the cost of University overheads. No honorarium is being given to the Faculty resource person.. . All are welcome to attend these lectures, including members of the general public.
