Detailed description is The History of the Union Grove Church of Christ The following is taken from "Centennial Plus One: Union Grove Church of Christ" by H. Hall and Donald Brown in 1975.. . . The Union Grove Church of Christ was first organized July 6th, 1874, at Bright Star, then Lafayette County, Arkansas.. . According to the minutes from that initial meeting, thirty-five charter members were present, and two ministers, J.W. Wilks and C.S. Reeves, of Texas.. . The following paragraph reads exactly as it appears in those minutes:. . “Be it remembered that on this day we the undersigned, Disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ do meet together and constitute ourselves a congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ.”. . Family names that appear among the church’s charter members are as follows: Peace, Embree, Magee, Mercer, Kelley, Hicks, Mitchell, Lively, Brown, Linton, Foster, Westerfield, Westbrook, Maryman, Hickey, Wilbanks, Groves, Crocker, Whestone, Sanderson, and Boatwright.. . In August, 1878, four years after the church was first organized, the meeting house was moved from Bright Star to south of the Spring Bank and Jefferson Road. This was at Era, which was at that time a thriving community on a busy road as was Bright Star when the church was organized there.. . Sixty-nine members are listed as belonging to the church at Era on July 27, 1897.. . In 1910, the church was moved to its present location three miles southwest of Doddridge when F.W. and Florence Eubanks donated the land it now sets on. The description of this land is given in the deed as “located 300 feet through west to the public road leading from Bright Star, Arkansas, to Wales Ferry, Louisiana,” which apparently was also a well-travelled road then.. . Public Subscription, a method by which people of the community or churches pledged certain amounts of money, was then the way in which schools and churches were built where there were none, and it was by public subscription that the present building was constructed. Citizens of the community donated $500 and the lumber from the old church house was used, and the present building erected in 1923 and 1924. The minutes explain further, “All this being accomplished without any outstanding indebtness against said building.” Signed N.M. Cauthorn, Secretary.. . The four oldest living members are Mrs. Polly Dunlap, Mr. & Mrs. L.M. Barnett, and Mrs. Ada Eason.
