L’Use (Unione Sportiva Empolese) è nata nel lontano 1926 per iniziativa di alcuni sportivi locali. Le gloriose maglie bianco-rosse sono state indossate, inizialmente, dagli atleti empolesi in particolare sulle piste e le pedane di atletica leggera.. La sezione basket è nata quasi 50 anni fa per iniziativa del compianto professor Arbaro Lazzeri, docente di pallacanestro all’Isef di Firenze ed instancabile promoter di questo sport ad Empoli, al quale è intitolato il palazzetto dello sport dove oggi giocano le quadre dell’Use.. Nel corso degli anni l’Use ha legato indissolubilmente il proprio nome al basket. Nel dopoguerra questo sport è divenuta l’unica specialità seguita dalla società. Basket ed Use, ad Empoli ed in Toscana sono ormai l’uno sinomino dell’altra.. Nella stagione 2002-2003 l’Use ha conquistato nel campionato maschile la promozione in B2.. E’ l’unica squadra italiana, partecipante ad un campionato nazionale di basket, composta quasi esclusivamente di giocatori provenienti dal proprio vivaio.. Dalle giovanili dell’Use sono usciti molti giovani, che sono riusciti a trovare un loro spazio nel mondo del basket a livello nazionale.. Il primo ad approdare in serie A fu l’ex responsabile dello staff tecnico, Marcello Billeri, e poi Massimo Iacopini, che è arrivato ad indossare la maglia azzurra ed è diventato capitano della Benetton Treviso in un momento storico per la squadra di Treviso e Francesco Mazzoni, che dopo aver militato in varie squadre di serie A è tornato ad indossare la maglia dell’Use come allenatore e responsabile del settore giovanile. L’ultimo è Guido Rosselli, classe 1983, che gioca oggi gioca a Pistoia in A2, dopo aver indossato le maglie di Rieti e Biella ed aver fatto parte del giro della nazionale maggiore.. La valorizzazione di questi giovani ha avuto anche ricadute di natura economica per l’Unione Sportiva Empolese e tutto quanto è stato reinvestito nelle attività per dare l’opportunità ad altri ragazzi e ragazze empolesi di giocare a basket.. Il Palazzetto dello Sport delle Cascine, dove oggi giocano le squadre dell’Use, di proprietà del Comune di Empoli, è stato realizzato, quindici anni fa, anche con un contributo di quasi 150 milioni di vecchie lire regalati dall’Unione Sportiva Empolese all’Amministrazione comunale in cambio di una convenzione che permettesse alla società di avere a disposizione la struttura per le attività rivolte ai giovani, fermo restando che al mattino il palazzetto sarebbe stato utilizzato dalla vicina scuola elementare.. LA NOSTRA FILOSOFIA. L’USE è una società sportiva senza fini di lucro gestita attraverso l’attività di volontariato dei propri dirigenti che hanno messo a disposizioni le proprie conoscenze, i propri rapporti professionali ed istituzionali, le loro capacità organizzative.. La filosofia seguita dall’Unione Sportiva Empolese è sempre la stessa: insegnare ai bambini ed alla bambine ad apprezzare il basket, il gusto di stare insieme, di creare un gruppo.. Lo sforzo finanziario ed umano dei dirigenti di questa società è mirato a raggiungere questi obiettivi.. L’USE Basket è una società sportiva dilettantistica, che è patrimonio dell’intera collettività. Con questo spirito è stata gestita da tutti i dirigenti che si sono susseguiti alla sua guida. L’obiettivo è sempre stato quello di chiudere i bilanci in pareggio ( ed in 50 anni di attività ci siamo sempre riusciti), incrementare le iniziative a favore dei giovani, aumentare gli spazi dove sia possibile praticare il basket.
