.Secondo il dottor Claudio Costa, quando sono nato, il 16 febbraio 1979, nel cielo di Urbino si sono scatenati fulmini e saette: insomma, accadde qualcosa di straordinario…Non so se sia vero, quello che è certo è che la mia carriera è iniziata molto presto.
Graziano, il mio babbo, era un pilota di moto e fin da piccolino mi ha messo in sella a qualcosa con delle ruote: la leggenda narra che ho avuto prima il motorino della bicicletta.
Sembra comunque che quando avevo tre anni, Graziano avesse preparato un piccolo motorino con le rotelline, con il quale ho cominciato subito a divertirmi.
Allora abitavo nella sua casa a Tavullia, vicino alla quale c’è un parcheggio asfaltato dove potevi creare una specie di pista: lì ho cominciato a girare con questo motorino rosso e le rotelline, che il Grazia poi mi ha subito tolto fin da piccolissimo.
Si può dire che quello sia stato il mio primo circuito, dove ho girato con tutto quello che avevo.
Graziano, però, aveva un po’ paura della moto e la sua intenzione era indirizzarmi verso le quattro ruote.
Anche perché lui, nella sua carriera, aveva fatto un sacco di incidenti, si era fatto male, tanto da essere costretto a lasciare le gare di moto per quelle di auto.

Quando avevo cinque anni, il Grazia era arrivato a casa con un kart 60 cc: mi era piaciuto molto e così in quel periodo ho usato tanto il kart, con il quale andavamo a girare nei parcheggi della zona industriale, tra cui quello della “Chiusa di Ginestreto”, che è vicino alla strada che da Tavullia scende verso Pesaro.
Mi ricordo che riempiva con l’acqua le lattine della benzina, le metteva nel parcheggio costruendo una sorta di pista.
Però la cosa più pericolosa che facevo in quel periodo era con una macchinina a pedali, fatta come una vecchia Lotus F.1, quella colorata di verde, che il Grazia legava dietro a un motorino.
Lui, naturalmente, guidava il motorino, io la macchina e con la fune mi tirava per insegnarmi a fare i traversi, che erano davvero belli dato che le gomme della “Lotus” erano di plastica.
Quando lui non c’era, andavo da solo giù per la discesa del giardino di casa e quando ero a metà giravo per derapare, fermandomi da una parte.
Ma era una specie di roulette russa, perché alla fine della discesa c’è la statale…Quando mia mamma ha capito cosa facevo, venne chiuso il cancello a metà discesa: non riuscivo più a prendere abbastanza velocità per fare le mie derapate..

At the time we lived at his house at Tavullia close to which there was a tarmac parking lot where I could create a type of race track; there I started to go round with this little red moped with the side wheels, that Graziano promptly removed.
It can be said that this was my first circuit, where, I lapped with everything I had.
Graziano, however, was a bit scared of motorbikes and his intention was to point me in the direction of cars.
Also because he had many accidents in his carrier and he hurt himself so much as to be forced to leave Motorcycle racing for Car racing..
When I was five years old, Graziano arrived home with a 60cc Go-Kart; I liked it a lot and I used the Go-Kart loads of times then, we would race round the parking lots of Industrial areas one of which was “Chiusura di Ginestreto”, which is close to the road that from Tavullia goes down to Pesaro.
I remember that he used to fill up petrol cans with water and would put them down in the parking lot making a kind of circuit.
But the most dangerous thing I done in that period was with a little pedal car in the shape of an old green coloured Lotus F1, that Graziano would tie with a rope to the moped.
Naturally to teach me how to slide out in corners, he would ride the moped and with the rope would pull me along in the car, they were great slides as the Lotus wheels were made of plastic.
When he was not around, I would go on my own down the hill in the garden at home and when I was halfway down I would turn to skid, stopping at the side.
But it was a kind of Russian roulette, because at the end of the slope there was the main road.
When my Mum caught on to what I was doing she had a fit and from then on closed the gate that was halfway down the slope: I was not able to get enough speed up anymore to do my skids...
