Los primeros pasos de Willie Colón en la música datan de 1965 cuando se integra al movimiento salsero liderado por Tito Puente, Charlie Palmieri, Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow y Ray Barretto. En 1967 participa en la formación del sello discográfico La Fania, el mismo nuclearia las expresiones musicales latinas que se estaban produciendo simultáneamente en Nueva York. También durante ese año y bajo ese mismo sello, edita su primer disco junto a Héctor Lavoe. La canción El Malo, del álbum homónimo, se convierte en un éxito recordado hasta hoy. El dúo adquiere gran reputación en el circuito de clubes, sus temas contribuyen a que la música latina comience a sonar en las radios de Nueva York y a la difusión del sello Fania, con el que editan El buscón (1968), Guisando (1969), Cosa nuestra (1970), Asalto navideño (1971), La gran fuga (1971), El crimen paga (1972), El juicio (1972), Lo mato (1973) y El bueno, el malo y el feo (1975). Tras siete años de carrera, este dúo se separa y Willie Colón se une a Rubén Blades, con él su carrera se afianza, y en 1977 graban Metiendo mano. En 1978, editan el famoso álbum Siembra, al que siguieron las producciones Maestra vida I y II, Canciones del solar de los aburridos y The Last Fight. Paralelamente, Willie Colón realiza trabajos como productor para Tania Libertad, Sophy y Soledad Bravo y como arreglador y músico para Celia Cruz, junto a la que graba la recordada canción Burundanga. Su trabajo como solista incluye los discos Doble energía (1980) junto a Ismael Miranda, Solo (1979), Fantasmas (1981), Mi sueño y Tiempo pa'matar (1984).
