Detailed description is Το Τατζ Μαχάλ είναι κτιριακό συγκρότημα που βρίσκεται στην Ινδία, κτισμένο στη νότια όχθη του ποταμού Γιαμούνα κοντά στη πόλη Άγκρα. Το συγκρότημα αναπτύσσεται γύρω από το μαυσωλείο που ανήγειρε ο Σαχ Γιαχάν Μογγόλος αυτοκράτορας προκειμένου να τιμήσει τη πολυαγαπημένη του σύζυγο Μουμτάζ Μαχάλ που πέθανε το 1631 κατά τη διάρκεια τοκετού.Για την ανέγερσή του, που έγινε σε σχέδια ομάδας αρχιτεκτόνων από την Ινδία, το σημερινό Πακιστάν και άλλα μέρη της Ασίας, απασχολήθηκαν 20.000 εργάτες που ξεκίνησαν το 1632 δουλεύοντας καθημερινά, για να το ολοκληρώσουν το 1649. Πλην όμως για να ολοκληρωθούν όλα τα κτίσματα του συγκροτήματος χρειάστηκαν 22 χρόνια.Η έκταση που καταλαμβάνει το κυρίως μαυσωλείο και όλο το συγκρότημα είναι ένα ορθογώνιο με διαστάσεις 580×350 μέτρα, με τετράγωνο κήπο στο κέντρο που πλαισιώνεται από δύο άλλα μικρότερα επιμήκη κτίρια προσανατολισμένα κατά διεύθυνση Βορρά - Νότου. Επί της νότιας πλευράς του όλου συγκροτήματος βρίσκεται η κύρια πύλη του συγκροτήματος που είναι από ψαμμίτη. Η βόρεια πλευρά του συγκροτήματος περιλαμβάνει το Μαυσωλείο και καταλήγει στην όχθη του ποταμού Γιαμούνα. Δεξιά του Μαυσωλείου έχει ανεγερθεί τζαμί και αριστερά κτίριο ομοιόμορφο με το τζαμί, λεγόμενο τζαβάμπ, που διατηρεί την αισθητική αρχιτεκτονική ισορροπία. Το όλο συγκρότημα περικλείεται από ψηλό τειχικό περίβολο που φέρει ανά διαστήματα οκταγωνικούς πυργίσκους. Έξω δε από τον περίβολο αυτό και προς νότο βρίσκονται τα βοηθητικά κτίσματα της φρουράς καθώς και σταύλοι.
