Hiroshi Nakano holds a BA from Waseda University's School of Commerce. He completed an executive course in branding and marketing strategy at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and studied business administration at Harvard Business School.
While still a university student, Hiroshi spent eight months traveling to a total of 18 countries worldwide, including China and various nations in Southeast Asia and South America, conducting on-site interviews and performing research for a tourism industry seminar for his major. In the process, he learned a great deal about the conflicting goals of environmental conservation and tourism development.
After working for a time at Denso Corporation, a major international automotive components manufacturer headquartered in Japan, Hiroshi moved on to serve at think tanks specializing in the automotive and housing industries.
Career Highlights:
• 1992 Attended the Earth Summit, a United Nations conference on global environment and development, where he directly interviewed officials and heads of state from more than 100 nations around the world, including US President George H.W. Bush, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, UK Prime Minister John Major and Communist Party of Cuba Secretary-General Fidel Castro, among others. Wrote several reports and articles based on information gleaned from these interviews.
• 1997 Became an independent journalist in order to attend the third United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP3) in Kyoto, Japan, in December.
• 1998 Founded the Eco-Life Institute as a limited-liability company (reorganized as a joint-stock corporation in 2004), presiding over a coalition of "Eco-Life Members" committed to doing business with a high degree of environmental consciousness. Within three years of the company's founding, the ranks of Eco-Life Members had swelled to over 500 companies.
• 1999 Began consulting operations for creating and launching "eco-brand" properties.
• 2005 Began presidency of Gocoo Brand Consulting, formally instructing more than 300 individuals so far in brand management strategies.
• 2006 Began presidency of the Eco Design House Research Group, a consortium of 10 elite companies engaged in ongoing research on eco-friendly home design.
• 2010 Founded the Green Japan Foundation and currently serves as its first director.
