FREETOWN — That big boom you heard on Saturday wasn't fireworks, and it wasn't another earthquake.
Believe it or not, it was two old old artillery shells, which were discovered at the Town of Freetown Transfer Station on Howland Road, according to a press release from Freetown Police.
Freetown Police and Fire units were dispatched, and State Police bomb disposal technicians arrived on scene and detonated the shells at approximately 5 p.m.
While there was no danger to residents during the disposal process, a reverse 911 call was made so that residents were alerted to the the loud report and vibration caused by the detonation, according to Lt. Steven E. Abbott, Public Information Officer.
