Spanish government has stripped the authorities of their powers and taken charge of its government. The crackdown began after the region declared independence on friday. Spains deputy prime minister, here she is, says shes tape over from the former catalan president who was sacked on friday. The Central Government says new elections will be held in december. Earlier the sacked separatist leader called for democratic opposition to direct rule from madrid. Heres our correspondent James Reynolds who is in barcelona. This is the first full day of direct rule from madrid and no ones yet sure quite what to make of it. Catalan organisations have told people here to carry on as normal. Right here, its hard to tell that anything has changed one way or another. Local Catalan Police officers still guard this, the catalan political headquarters, and separatist leaders who have technically been sacked by madrid are now trying to work out their next move. The catalan leader, carles puigdemont, features on todays front pages, refusing to accept that he has been fired. Translation we do not deviate, we continue persevering in the only way that can make us winners. Without violence, without insults, in an inclusive way, respecting people, symbols and opinions. Many here are worried about what may come next. Antonio and pilar want a fresh start. Translation elections, elections, elections, he tells me. And over in madrid, demonstrators have came out supporting direct rule. Translation for me, this is great. They should have done it earlier, but they did the right thing. Today, i give a ten. I am catalan, i am spanish, and it is a moment when we need to be more united, be more brave and to do something definitive. Here in catalonia, the arguments run deeply, but right now, a single view appears to unite all sides. No one should resort to violence. We will have more on that story later in the programme when we will be speaking to two people from both sides of the debate. Stay with us for that. Two powerful explosions have taken place in the somali capital, mogadishu. The first blast was caused by a car bomb being driven into a hotel, with reports of gunmen storming the hotel afterwards. A second blast took place near the former Parliament House nearby. At least 14 people have been killed. The Islamist Group al shabaab says it was responsible for the attacks. Our correspondent tomi oladipo is in neighbouring kenya. Iasked him who the targets of the attacks were. Al shabab the targets of the attacks were. Al sha bab says it the targets of the attacks were. Al shabab says it carried out this attack to target government and intelligence officials who were in the hotel. That hotel is known to be a place that attracts a lot of high profile officials, high profile government officials and al shabab has targeted similar venues where such personnel frequent. This group has been quick to release this statement and its not its very much in line with what al shabab does, these truck bombings or car bombings and then storming a building using gunmen. This comes just two weeks after that devastating attack which killed so many people, one of the largest the countrys ever seen. Can the country cope with this sort of islamist terrorism in the country . Its difficult for somalia this time, considering the history its had with instability and war and then now al shabab with instability and war and then now al sha bab with with instability and war and then now al shabab with its constant attacks, not just in now al shabab with its constant attacks, notjust in mogadishu but in other parts of the country. Somalia has recently had pledges of support from around the world, from neighbours, uganda and several other countries, including the us which is also stepping up its Counterterrorism Operations in africa. So, there is that and there is the need for it. But also i think the problems in somalia go much deeper and its not just the problems in somalia go much deeper and its notjust a military offensive thats needed against al shabab, but there is a sense that there is also a need to tackle some of the local problems to do with rifleries between Different Levels of government, as well as the different clans in somalias system rivalries. Reports in the us media say the first charges have been file filed in the investigation into alleged russian interference in last years us president ial election. A federal grandjury us president ial election. A federal grand jury approved them on friday and anyone facing them could be taking into custody as soon as possible monday. Us intelligence agencies concluded in january that russia meddled in the president ial election to try to help donald trump defeat Hillary Clinton. Robert mueller was appointed by the Justice Department to lead the investigation a week after President Trump sacked the fbi Directorjames Comey who was previously in charge. Mrmuellers tea m previously in charge. Mrmuellers team has conducted extensive interviews with current and former senior officials at the white house. Lets get more and speak to our correspondent laura bicker in washington. How significant a development is this . Well, first of all we dont know who the charges, who will be charged. Second, we dont know what the charges are. We expect to find out more on monday. But this could be a significant development. Remember, this is an investigation that overshadowed the first few months of the Trump Administration. Since then, its been more or less in the background. It could once again take centre stage next week. This investigation was started after several intelligence agencies concluded that russia meddled in the us president ial election and they believed that they did so to try to help donald trump. There have also been allegations that the Trump Campaign colluded with russia. Obviously, the Trump Campaign and President Trump have said that those claims are false. He believes this isa claims are false. He believes this is a witchhunt. When it comes to those charges that us media are reporting could be made public on monday, President Trump has tweeted, on friday certainly, that he believes this is fake news. Theres also a move by republicans and by those who have been members of the Trump Administration to try to flip the script so to speak, to turn the ta bles the script so to speak, to turn the tables and say it should be Hillary Clinton under investigation and not donald trump. When it comes to the investigation itself, Robert Mueller was appointed in may as you said, after the fbi director james was appointed in may as you said, after the fbi Directorjames Comey was fired. There were many, many calls forjames comey after after his firing for robert muler to be put in charge, for an independent investigation. He has been slowly and methodically interviewing witnesses, and trying very hard to get through all the vast information that intelligence agencies have put before him. If these charges come to bear on monday this would be the first charges brought forward and as isaid, it first charges brought forward and as i said, it could be a significant development. All crew members on Royal Navy Submarines are to undergo compulsory drugs tests, after nine sailors on hms vigilant were discharged for reportedly using cocaine. Andrew black reports. The hms vigilant, one of four submarines based on the clyde, which carries nuclear weapons, today the ministry of defence confirmed that nine sailors serving on the submarine had been thrown out of the navy after failing drug tests. According to one report, the drug they took was cocaine. Now the mp who represents the area which takes in the home of Trident Nuclear weapons says answers are needed. I am astonished. Deeply disappointed and very concerned. If we are to have these weapons of mass destruction on our doorstep here at faslane, we have got to be absolutely confident that the people at the ministry of defence, the royal navy put in charge of them, take the responsibility seriously. I dont believe in this case that they have. There has been trouble on hms vigilant before. The captain was relieved of his command after an alleged inappropriate relationship with a member of his crew although the navy said operations were not impacted. Following todays revelations, the royal navy said it did not tolerate drugs misuse, adding that those who are found to have fallen short of our high standards face being discharged from service. Defence secretary sir Michael Fallon is now understood to have ordered drugs tests on all uk submarine crews. He is said to have given the head of the navy a roasting for the incident. Meanwhile the snp, which wants trident removed from the clyde, says it is seeking to ask urgent questions in parliament next week. Stay with us here on bbc news. Still to come. This is bbc world news today. The headlines. Catalonias dismissed leader has urged peaceful opposition to madrids direct rule. At least seven people are killed after two explosions in the centre of the somalia capital, mogadishu. The Pakistani Cricket Team are preparing to host sri lanka on sunday. The First Time Since they we re sunday. The First Time Since they were attacked by militants nine yea rs were attacked by militants nine years ago. Eight people were killed when gunmen opened fire on the Sri Lankan Team bus. Since then, pakistan have been forced to play their home games in the gulf because other teams have been too concerned about security. Now, though, many in pakistan see the return of the Sri Lankan Team as heralding the return of International Cricket to the country. This empty plot of land is playing host to three simultaneous games of cricket. With the match everyone is talking about will take place a few kilometres away when pakistan take on sri lanka. Translation i am really happy the Sri Lankan Team is coming here. For a long time theres been no cricket in pakistan. Thats been really damaging for young players. Translation we will be supporting both teams but particularly the sri lankans. Whoever wins, its a victory for cricket. This is what happened last time the Sri Lankan Team came to lahore. Eight people were killed, a number of players injured. Following the attack, pakistan have held their home games in the united arab emirates. Even the top cricket domestic championship is played there. All at a huge cost to the cricket board. Playing our home series away from home crowds in foreign lands like dubai means our expenses are literally like 100 increase. Net profits, are ploughed back into game development, into stadium maintenance, upkeep, player contracts, fees and so on. All that has suffered. At the 23,000seater stadium theyre preparing for sundays match. Earlier this year the final of the Domestic League featuring International Players was held here. A world 11 team visited too. But cricket wont be back to normal until everyone feels co mforta ble normal until everyone feels comfortable visiting. We have regular bilateral series, then you can honestly say that cricket has come back. Right now its almost like a one off event. Its like theyre starting to get teams back so theyre starting to get teams back so that at least the world gets co mforta ble so that at least the world gets comfortable with the idea that cricket is returning to pakistan. Terrorist attacks have greatly reduced in pakistan in recent years. But there will still be tight security for this game. The next step is for matches to be played in other cities across the country and then for a full international series. Cricketing authorities here say they hope that will happen within the next two years. Lets return to our main story. How will people in catalonia react . We can speak to two people on either side of the debate, a prounity activist, jarrier merelo and Ernest Mendoza who is in a town just outside barcelona. There are calls for democratic opposition to direct rule, will you be responding . Definitely. I think its our duty now. We ask our politicians to engage this process and now its time for us to support them and support the birth of our new republic. How will you be doing that . Well, the idea is to demonstrate specifically and dont allow Central Government to apply these new 155 regulations they want to seize the Catalan Government and institutions. Are you prepared to be arrested . Well, i am not feeling that i am doing anything wrong. I am demonstrating and until now that might change in spain, recent developments, but demonstrate something not illegal yet. Javier, how do you feel when you hear arguments like that . Good evening everyone. First of all, actually i think he is right, i mean, demonstrating is not illegal and we have a right to demonstrate in spain, we have done it many times. I think it is in his right. Ijust think it is in his right. Ijust think that unfortunately we are divided on this, the catalan side is divided, so ijust feel sad that he is going to do that. Ijust feel really sad that the catalan nationalists have brought down our institutions. What action will you be taking, if any . Actually, the next elections, there is not the elections themselves, so on december zist elections themselves, so on december 21st we have a snap election, it has been called by the prime minister. Sol been called by the prime minister. So i will participate in encouraging people to participate in those elections. Do you have friends and family who differ in the opinions that you have and do you try and convince them of your opinion . We all do. I mean, we have people on both sides. If you dont you are living in a one living in a bubble. You have the hard core, nationalism and you have those convinced that fake economic arguments like you had for brexit and those are realising that all the calls, all the claims that the economic regional minister did were actually fake. And we will suffer economically. Javier was talking about companies, i understand you actually own a business. Yes. What will you be doing, i understand you will you be doing, i understand you will be taking part in strike action but will you open your business for employees who disagree with your opinion . Obviously, the right for a strike is a right. Its not an obligation. So if any employee wants to go to work, i mean, there is absolutely no i would like to make absolutely no i would like to make a point, infact, absolutely no i would like to make a point, in fact, few companies are moving only the social side which is not moving the economic activity. There has even been companies that said the king of spain make them a call to leave. We are living a kind of Economic Sabotage and this thing that the government says, what javier i think said, its not true, reality is complicated thing. You know, what might be realfor reality is complicated thing. You know, what might be real for you reality is complicated thing. You know, what might be realfor you is not real for us know, what might be realfor you is not realfor us or the know, what might be realfor you is not real for us or the other way around. So more than, to me more than whats going to happen in the next two years in catalonia when we leave spain is will happen in catalonia in the next ten years, if we dont leave because its a country thats going to fail economically because of the debt or the way the economy is organised. So, you know, join us, we will live much better. You will see. U nfortu nately, we much better. You will see. Unfortunately, we have run out of time. Its an extraordinary thing thats going on where you are. I hope you two can come to some sort of unity between you. Thank you ever so of unity between you. Thank you ever so much for being with the bbc. Lets get the sport for you. Thank you very much. In the English Premier LeagueManchester United continued their 100 record at old trafford after a dull 10 100 record at old trafford after a dull 1 0 win over tottenham. United are second in the league with spurs third. Jose mourinho defended the game which wasnt the most entertaining. Both teams tried to win but i think both teams fear the opponent because the opponent could hurt at any moment. So i think tactical game with emotion, with everything good, probably one goal in the first half would make even a better game but i think the game really. In the other games a 96th minute stoppage time goal which will fred saha that earned palace a draw. Thats all the sport for now. Thank you very much. Thats it from me and the team. Bye for now. Hi there. For most its been a pretty cloudy day. The satellite picture tells that story nicely. There have been brighter moments across parts of scotland, sunshine across parts of scotland, sunshine across the midlands and southern england as well. Earlier today one of our weather watchers sent us a sunny picture from salisbury wiltshire. Another cracking weather watcher picture sent from northern scotland. This cloud is caused by strength winds blowing clouds over the highlands and causing the air to wave around making that wave like pattern. Thank you for that. It stays windy during this evening. Scotla nd stays windy during this evening. Scotland and over into the eastern of the pennines dpuss could reach 40 50mph gusts. Its a big change you will notice in the weather. We start to drag in much colder northerly winds. Although it starts off on northerly winds. Although it starts offona northerly winds. Although it starts off on a cloudy note just about everywhere, the cloud thick enough for occasional spot of light rain and drizzle around the coasts and hills, its later in the night that colder air will begin to move into scotland, so where it stays cloudy temperatures into double figures but the colder air arriving in scotland and here could get close enough for ground frost across sheltered parts of northern scotland. Sunday, starting off on a cloudy note but that cloud is forecast to melt away quickly and there will be more sunshine than today. A few showers coming and going across the north east of scotland but its the temperatures you will notice. It will progressively get colder. Eight oi will progressively get colder. Eight or nine across parts of Northern England and scotland, coupled with that strong wind it will feel chilly. Later in the afternoon temperatures dropping away in london. Through sunday night High Pressure d rifts london. Through sunday night High Pressure drifts across the british isle. That will give us a combination of clear skies, light winds and temperatures will plummet, a colder night than we have seen for a colder night than we have seen for a long time. There will be a touch of frost developing across parts of wales, into maybe northern ireland, Northern England and parts of scotla nd Northern England and parts of scotland as well. A chilly one on the cards. Monday, could be mist and fog patches to start the day but its a dry and bright day. Rain coming in late across the far north and west and temperatures colder than normalfor and west and temperatures colder than normal for the time of year. Not said that much this autumn.
