Thats in half an hour here on bbc news. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. Tens of thousands of people have been marching in the zimbabwean capital, harare, and in the second city, bulawayo, calling on president mugabe to step down. Crowds have been singing at the gates of the president s official residence, urging him to go. Mr mugabe has been under virtual house arrest since the army took control of the country four days ago. Well, the countrys ruling party, zanu pf has said itll dismiss mr mugabe as its leader tomorrow and reinstate the ousted vice president. Ben brown is in zimbabwe. Good evening from the capital of zimbabwe. It has been an extraordinary day here and historic and momentous day. You can still hear from the streets below me cars honking their horns in celebration of this day. People still cheering because today really we saw people power on the streets of harare. In tens of thousands, zimbabweans abandoned their fear and took to the streets to demand that Robert Mugabe stands down immediately. We have already seen that the army were fed up already seen that the army were fed up with mugabe and wanted him out, as his own party wants him out as well, with their no confidence vote in him. Today the people showed that they want him out as well. The pressure for him to go now is irresistible. But he is still hanging on. Fergal keane reports. Something happened inside the people today. A shared energy that helped them into the streets. They were there on the big streets and small. A common purpose in a place so long divided. Voices that wouldnt have dared speak of Robert Mugabe a few days ago now sound his political requiem. We have waited for this for 37 years you have come back from england, you are happy to see this, im sure. Indeed, i am very happy. This is a new beginning for the people of zimbabwe. What i am seeing here is the death of a dictator. All of the faces of the nation came into harare. Joy was unrestrained. And exubera ntly expressed. Who knows what freedom the military coup will deliver . But an army that was once an instrument of oppression is now celebrated. This tells you everything, this is what the people are thinking in harare. Fear has been cast off and expectations awakened. Watching the march i met this man, a participant dick with a young family. Dough you believe the army will allow you to be free . Yes, if they dont . Well, it is difficult for them not to allow us to be free because we have been free, we just never exercise our freedom. Viva the people of zimbabwe. Those who forced this moment include many ho were ardent supporters of Robert Mugabe. Now they call for the departure of the president and his wife. The people of zimbabwe have spoken, and the people of zimbabwe have said you and your husband should go to die and not today and not tomorrow. Robert mugabe is under intense pressure, yet this afternoon was refusing to stand down. At one of his official residences the army was pushing back demonstrators but they would not leave the area. So people are very angry and they want to get through, past these army lines, to this official residence, one of the president s official residence, man told me we want to get in and tell these people what we think of them. Everybody here is now certain that the moment of Robert Mugabes departure is drawing near. We arejust we are just hearing that he will be meeting the Army Commanders here tomorrow morning for more negotiations about his future. We have heard from his only that he insists he will step down because he believes that would surmise what he sees as a coup detat against him. But if he doesnt go voluntarily, tomorrow the Central Committee of the ruling party here will meet to expel him as party leader, to depose him. On tuesday it is expected that the parliament will meet to impeach the parliament will meet to impeach the president and force him out of office. Thank you. The new leader of scottish labour has promised to offer voters what he called a message of real hope. Richard leonard, a Jeremy Corbyn supporter who was elected to holyrood 18 months ago, replaces Kezia Dugdale. Shes to take part in the reality tv show, im a celebrity, get me out of here. Heres our scotland editor, sarah smith. Applause. Electing Richard Leonard as their leader marks a left turn for the Scottish Labour Party as he becomes their fourth leader injust three years. There is now a settled consensus, established around a radical policy agenda, for the Scottish Labour Party. Richard leonard was only elected to the Scottish Parliament last year. He is a yorkshireman, a former trade Union Organiser and a committed corbyn loyalist. There are times in the past where it has appeared that the Scottish Labour Party has looked to pick fights with Jeremy Corbyn. I wont be doing that. We cant afford the luxury of splits and divisions, we need to Work Together, and i am determined that the Scottish Labour Party, from whom today i have received a mandate, will be working closely and in step withJeremy Corbyn and the entire labour party. Anas sarwar was the more moderate candidate in what was a fractious race. I think it is obvious to see at times this campaign has been conducted in the most comradely way. I would hope we can come together as a labour party now and focus on the real opponents that is the snp and the tories. The labour party are facing a substantial challenge in scotland. They are in third place behind the snp and the tories. They are going to have to fight hard to even regain their place as the official opposition in the Scottish Parliament. And they are going to have to win a lot more scottish seats ifJeremy Corbyn is ever going to form a government in westminster. On our way out, the departing leader Kezia Dugdale has sprung a surprise. She is to appear on im a celebrity, get me out of here, a decision that has been sharply criticised of members of her own party. Sarah smith, bbc news. Malcolm young, co founder and guitarist of the australian rock bank ac dc has died aged 64 he founded the group in the 1970s with his brother angus, retiring more than forty years later to receive treatment for dementia. The band were best known for albums highway to hell and back in black, and were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2003. In a statement on the groups website, they described as malcom was a perfectionist who with enormous dedication and commitment, was the driving force behind the band air accident investigators are trying to find out what caused a light aircraft and a helicopter to collide over buckinghamshire yesterday afternoon. Two pilots and two passengers died near the village of waddesdon. The bbc understands that captain mike green was one of the four killed. It is not known if he was flying a helicopter at the time of the crash. Our correspondent dan johnson is at wycombe air park in buckinghamshire. He sent this update a short time ago. This is the airfield on the edge of twickenham that the two aircraft took off from yesterday. We dont know exactly what time they left here, or exactly where they were heading up why they both came together over that patch of woodlands, which is about 20 miles from here at midday yesterday. Thats when eyewitnesses say they heard a bang in the sky. They looked up and saw pieces of debris spiralling down to the ground. That is where the crash happened, just on the edge of a country estate. Today crash investigators have been going through that patch of woodland, trying to find all the bits of wreckage, trying to work out exactly what caused this crash. We have seen them sifting through the remains of the two aircraft, a light aircraft and a helicopter. They have taken some pieces of evidence away for further examination. It is difficult, delicate work and the best of times and today conditions are particularly bad. Around four oclock this afternoon, we got an update at the crash scene from Thames Valley police who are leading who are leading the investigation. Yesterday, there was an air accident at waddesdon estate, where four people, sadly, lost their lives. I can now confirm that all those people were men two in each of the aircraft involved. All of the families have now been informed and are being supported by specialist officers in the family liaison arena. Three have visited the site today, so they can understand a little bit more about what happened to their loved ones. We remain on site today so that we can work with the air Accident Branch and a number of other experts from the fire service and military, with a view to using their Expert Services to recover the bodies of the men, hopefully, before the end of today. Our enquiries will continue for the rest of the weekend and i anticipate that we will remain on site at least until tomorrow evening. Confirmation that four men died in this accident. Two on each of the aircraft. A pilot and a passenger in the light aircraft and helicopter, too. The officer stating the investigation has got much further to run. They expect to be on at least through tomorrow and on monday, piecing together the evidence that will lead to them getting a full indication of exactly what went wrong in this crash. A difficult time for the families of those who have died and those who knew them as well. Nobody here at the airfield was willing to talk about the men who died, but obviously they know the people who have lost their lives and its really deeply affecting people here. Someone told me that instructors came here this morning to be together and to share each Others Company at such a difficult time. That investigation work still has quite a work still has quite a way to run yet. Herfamily confirmed her family confirmed that an item of clothing found matched what she was believed to have been wearing on the day she went missing. Yesterday detectives released a 49 year old man who had been arrested on suspicion of murder. 90 mps about a third of them conservatives have signed a letter to the Prime Minister and chancellor to say that patients are being failed by the nhs and social care in england. The politicians who signed the letter including nearly 30 former ministers are calling for parties to Work Together to find a solution. Our Health Editor hugh pym reports. The pressure on the nhs is growing. There are fears that hospitals will continue to struggle to find enough beds to admit new patients, partly because of difficulties discharging elderly patients, caused in turn by problems with social care. A group of mps now says that a long term Sustainable Settlement is needed and that only a cross party nhs and Care Convention can deliver that. In the letter written to the Prime Minister and the chancellor, the mps say and senior conservative labour and liberal democrat backbenchers are among those who signed the letter. I think the nhs and social care are huge issues for our generation and weve got to get it right and i think its bigger than just one party. The mps also call for action in next weeks budget to address the short term pressures on the system. A Government Spokesperson said it was recognised there was broad agreement across parliament, that social care reform was a priority, and there would be consultation ahead of a policy paper next year. Tens of thousands on the streets of harare demanding that he step down. Investigators search for clues as to why a light aircraft and helicopter collided in buckinghamshire, killing four men. The bbc understands one of those who died was captain mike green, a helicopter instructor. The former trade Union OrganiserRichard Bernard is elected leader of scottish labour, replacing Kezia Dugdale. Richard leonard. More now on the situation in zimbabwe. Calling on president Robert Mugabe to step down. Earlier i spoke to martin fletcher, former Foreign Editor of the times about the developing situation in the country. The military and Emmerson Mnangagwa dont want this to be seen asa mnangagwa dont want this to be seen as a coup. They want to force mugabe to go, in inverted commas, voluntarily, so theyre putting maximum pressure on him. Why they wa nt to maximum pressure on him. Why they want to see him go voluntarily is because he is still an iconic figure, they dont want to humiliate the founder of modern zimbabwe. But secondly because they know that when Emmerson Mnangagwa takes over, they will have to restore the economy and they can only do that with the help of the international committee, declaring the west. It is a true it is much harderfor the west declaring the west. It is a true it is much harder for the west to declaring the west. It is a true it is much harderfor the west to help them. This is all about putting pressure on mugabe to go in inverted commas, voluntarily. You interviewed Emmerson Mnangagwa last year. Just tell us a bit about him. He has been used to mugabe ever since the gaby persuaded him tojoin used to mugabe ever since the gaby persuaded him to join the liberation struggle in his teens. British steel more years, he is closely associated with the worst excesses of the mugabe regime. Including the bucharest in the massacre of 20,000 civilians. Back in the 1980s. But he differs from the gaby in one respect, he is much more of a pragmatist, much less of an ideologue. When i spoke to him, the message i got very clearly was that he wanted, he understood very clearly the need to restore, to rebuild zimba bwes clearly the need to restore, to rebuild zimbabwes broken economy. He talks about the need for foreign investment, the need for engagement with the west. It talks about the need to bring back the professionals who have fled zimbabwe, black and white, to help rebuild the economy. I think that will be, thats where he is going to differfrom mugabe. There wont be any political liberalisation, he is determined to keep zanu pf to maintain its grip on power, but he will try to bring some stability and restore the economy. I think in that he has the support of china, which is now an important player. As in south africa. Frankly possibly the western governments, he worked pretty weary of the protracted crisis in zimbabwe. Martin fletcher. The government is considering a tax on Single Use Plastics that are used in packaging and polystyrene takeaway boxes. The chancellor, philip hammond, is expected to use next weeks budget to announce a consultation on the measure to cut waste and pollution. An estimated 12 Million Tonnes of plastic enters the oceans each year, and residues are often found in fish, sea birds and marine mammals. Earlier i spoke to our business correspondentjoe lynam about the proposed changes. Examples of some of the types of plastics that the chancellor is hoping to target, a classic polystyrene box which many of us have enjoyed takeaway meals with. It cannot be recycled. It is single use plastic and could take decades if not longer to process. What they are doing is they are calling for a consultation to establish whether there should be a tax applied on such products it isa it is a consultation. We dont know how long it will last. The government cant even tell it how much they want to get out of this, is so its something were expecting to hear from the chancellor when he stands to his feet to announce the budget on wednesday. What has been the initial reaction to the idea of a consultation perhaps leading to some form of tax . I have been in touch with client service, friends of the earth and greenpeace and they say great idea that you have started the ball rolling, long time waiting for this to happen. Other countries have already done this, already banned polystyrene boxes. Many states in the us, not famed for its zeal to green credentials, have already banned polystyrene boxes including the state of new york. But they welcome the measure that the government is at least making a start at the wholesale. There is a lot of water needs to go under the bridge before we establish whether they will apply the tax. An interesting factoid is that people who might use those polystyrene boxes perhaps earn less than the national average. Which means they could be paying proportionately far more out of their income if there was a tax applied on the box. We assume that the retailer would pass on the tax. We are talking 5p, maybe iop, nota huge on the tax. We are talking 5p, maybe iop, not a huge amount of money but in proportion it would be more. That was joel line. Just going to bring you an update on the latest news concerning that crash, the aeroplane crash. In buckinghamshire on friday. We have had confirmation that one of those killed in the helicopter was captain mike green. We have now contribute from him. It has been published via facebook and twitter. It reads, we are devastated to confirm that captain mike green was involved in the midair collision which occurred yesterday. Reich was conducting a flight yesterday. Reich was conducting a Flight Instructor course and was with a student at the time of the incident. Both pilots lost their lives. We have received many m essa 9 es lives. We have received many m essa g es of lives. We have received many messages of support and kind words about our friends, who as a senior instructor and examiner helped and mental ward so many pilots throughout the industry during his distinguished career. Helps and mental ward. Was a mental ward two. Today marks 30 years since the kings cross fire, when 31 people lost their lives in the worst blaze in the history of the london underground. Today marks 30 years since the kings cross fire, it started when a single match was discarded on a wooden escalator. As tom edwards reports, the tragedy brought about monumental changes in fire safety. Thousands use this escalator every day and many dont know this is where the worst fire in the history of the tubes started. Stewart button is now retired, but nearly 30 years ago he was one of the first firefighters to arrive. We were laying out the equipment and it was then that we heard or started hearing all the screams. I thought there must be loads of people down there. Just scream after scream. 30 years on and this official report still makes terrifying reading. It describes how this station, full of commuters, turned into a furnace. It also outlines how the response from the Emergency Services was hampered, due to a breakdown in communication. And there was a lack of knowledge of the station layout. Even 30 years on, for the families of those who died, the memories are still raw. You cry a lot. For a long time. Its a shocking thing and everytime Something Like that happens, whether its grenfell or a terrorist incident, you think of all the people who are getting that news and the shock of it. The following enquiry led to a huge change to the tube and the Fire Services safety regimes. Among the many recommendations, wooden escalators should be removed, smoking should be banned and heat detectors and sprinklers should be installed. And crucially, the Emergency Services should be able to communicate with each other underground. Most of the recommendations have since been implemented. These types of exercises are now part of training and legislation ensures minimum Staffing Levels on deep line stations. There isnt a month goes by in myjob where we dont reference the kings cross fire. It had such a phenomenal and beneficial effect on the organisation. So out of a desperate tragedy, good things have actually come. The unions say they will resist anything that they think could compromise safety. And these changes only happened after the deaths of 31 londoners. The tunisian born designer rose to prominence in the 1980s and 90s, when models my only campbell and Cindy Crawford were among the stars to wear his trademark figure hugging designs. His dresses have been warned by a host of famous faces, from former us First Lady Michelle Obama to pop singer madonna, Victoria Beckham was among those to offer condolences today. She said the designer was one of her biggest inspirations. An original drawing of the comic book hero tintin has sold for nearly half a Million Dollars at an auction in paris. The artwork, by the belgian artist herge, was published in 1939 as the cover of a story called king ottokars sceptre. An original strip from the album the shooting star fetched 350,000, but a copy of the tintin adventure, destination moon, signed by us astronauts, failed to find a buyer. Paul gravett, a comics historian, told me more. Tintins a classic character. Its been, of course, revived recently in the peterjackson movie. There will be no more new tintin stories, but the great classic albums he already created in his lifetime are still being widely read. And i think the real interest in buying the artwork, the original works on paper, the ink on paper artwork by herge, is that theres only of those. There are a couple of hundred, or a couple of thousand of the rare First Edition albums that have survived. As youve reported, the destination moon album didnt sell. Its nice, even with the signature from the astronauts. What does allure collectors and investors, of course, is that this is the one and only drawing. Its a particularly lovely one because its in full colour. Theres been a huge boom in collecting comics art and this is puzzling the art world, the fine art world. Its probably explained because people with money who want to buy something that mean something to them, they dont necessarily want to buy an old master, a van gogh or something. Its probably out of their price range, it also probably doesnt mean so much to them. And similarly, theyre also a little bit distrustful of contemporary art. I mean, will it be worth anything tomorrow, or in a few years time . They buy something that means something to them, which is this artwork from these wonderful comics. Why didnt the astronaut version sell . Why do you think that is . As i say, i think its because there are quite a few copies of that one. Its a late album, its not such a rare. Its not a First Edition, necessarily, its not such a special, collectable item. But the whole area is really booming. This is a good price, but tintin works have gone for more than this in other auctions. But tintin works have gone for more Something Like almost a0 Million Euros of artwork, of comic artwork, sold last year in various auction houses including the major ones like sothebys and christies, in paris. And, for example, just recently, last month, an asterix album cover asterisk, the famous french comic character sold for one and a half Million Dollars, or euros. Its the same thing, near enough. Time for a look at the weather now, with tomazs schafernaker. The weather has been very grey and drizzly in the south today but the skies are going to clear right across the country tonight. It is going to be called, which means that sunday morning is going to be frosty across the uk. In the short term we still have some damp weather in the forest south, quite a bit of cloud across central areas. The north is already a lot clearer. By midnight, the temperatures will be dropping. Ivy early hours of sunday, in the countryside, temperatures will be down to 5 in the north and close to freezing is not below in central london. In cornwall and devon it will be just that bit milder overnight. Tomorrow lots of fine weather across central, eastern and northern france. Low pressure and a weather front with thicker cloud. Maybe some might rain getting into the far west of the uk during the course of the afternoon. That means monday is looking down and soggy across many parts of the uk. And will get colder in scotland. And little bit. Hello and welcome to sportsday, with me Lizzie Greenwood hughes hello, this is bbc news, the headlines at 6 30pm in zimbabwe, state television reported that president Robert Mugabe will meet military commanders for talks tomorrow.
