Hello and welcome to world news today. Storm barry may no longer be a hurricane, but emergency teams are warning that heavy rain and strong winds will continue to batter americas gulf coast for some time to come. The storm made landfall in the last few hours, about 15 miles west of new orleans, with winds of around 70 miles an hour. These are pictures from along the gulf coast as the storm was approaching. The state of louisiana has declared a state of emergency with tens of thousands of people without power. In new orleans, the mayor Latoya Cantrell has urged residents to stay vigilent. We are not out of the conditions that will cause heavy rainfall for the city of new orleans, although barry has slowed, it has also intensified, pushing the timing of expected impacts further into today, tonight and sunday. Sophie long is in canal street in new orleans. We know that it has slowed down, but it is still packing a punch, isnt it . Yes, and people in morgan city are filling that punch at the moment. We have heard from the mayo that they are 100 without power. More than 100,000 other people are also experiencing similar outages, and it is around that place at the moment, morgan city, about 60 miles west of here, where they are feeling the brunt of those at 70 mph wind. Here in new orleans, it isnt too bad, we are experiencing sudden downpours and strong winds, but as you heard from the migratory, they are expecting this term to have slowed, but it will come through. It is hoped that new orleans will be spared the brunt of the storm, but they are worried about here is a huge amount of rain that will fall overnight and in tomorrow stop some forecasters are expecting up to two feet of rainfall. This street im standing above was flooded only a few days ago due to the thunderstorms that preceded star matt on the Mississippi River, just a few hundred feet from where i am standing, that has been swelling to flood levels for months now. Storm barry. Even if they miss the storm, the amount of rainfall will lead to flooding. What are people doing in preparation for it . Really, all the preparations were made over the last few days, that a state of emergency you are talking about, that was declared on wednesday, and people have been preparing ever since. We were out with people yesterday, families, as they fill sandbags to shore up their homes and properties. Yesterday, the mayor told everyone, you have to make your preparations by 8pm, go home, take shelter and be prepared to stay there for several days. The streets of new orleans last night were pretty deserted, as people heeded those warnings. Overnight, people seem those warnings. Overnight, people seem to have lined up again, they are not nearly as busy as they would normally be, but quite a few people have come out to brave the rain. The message is, dont be complacent. The worst of storm barry is yet to come. Yes, we can see people Walking Around behind you, sophie, we are into Hurricane Season, as they call it, so this is reasonably regular for them, but of course, long memories of previous disasters, i suppose. Yes, you say we are in Hurricane Season, but everyone has been saying here that it is early to have a hurricane like this, it has 110w have a hurricane like this, it has now been downgraded to a Tropical Storm, but it is early. That is what the problem is, they had a wet spring here, hence the water levels of the mississippi were so high. It isa of the mississippi were so high. It is a combination of those two factors, an early storm and high river levels that havent had a chance to drain off. There are some good news today, yesterday, forecasters we re good news today, yesterday, forecasters were concerned that with the enormous amount of rain expected under the predicted storm surge, that the level of the Mississippi River would come too high and overwhelm the levy system put in place to protect it. People here are no strangers to a hurricane, eve ryo ne no strangers to a hurricane, everyone here remembers 2005 when they had a catastrophic flooding, claiming more than 1800 lives and devastated the lives of many others. This is an unwelcome reminder of that trauma, but the good news is today that they believe those levy systems, a lot of money has been spent on them in the 1a years that has passed to strengthen them, and also on the drainage system as well, so also on the drainage system as well, so there is more confidence now that the levy system will hold up, there is still the risk of flash flooding, thatis is still the risk of flash flooding, that is what people are being warned about. 0k, sophie, thank you. The number of People Killed in an attack on a hotel in somalias southern port of kismayo has risen to 26 according to local officials. Dozens more have been injured, al sha baab militants stormed the building on friday after setting off a large car bomb as regional politicians and clan elders met to discuss upcoming elections. The bbcs africa security correspondent tomi oladipo has more. This is a regular tactic that al shabaab uses when it attacks prominent buildings like this, the car bomb and the militants storming the building, and opening fire on the guests. Now, this is a hotel that was prominent with business people, with clan elders, with politicians, and that is the type of target that al shabaab was aiming for. Among those casualties, a prominentjournalist, a somali canadian journalist, hodan nalayeh, who was popular among the diaspora, and she had moved back to somalia to tell Inspiring Stories about what is changing in this country, and she now is a victim of this senseless violence. Where this particular attack happened, the port city of kismayo, has actually been relatively safe, the last major attack there was in 2015. Al shabaab was driven out of the city back in 2012, so this is the kind of city that seemed to be relatively safe and popular among business people, but in the rest of the country, particularly in the south and central parts of the country, al sha baab has established a presence that has been difficult to get rid of, that the government and its International Partners have struggled to regain control over these parts, despite the us air strikes and Multinational Forces operating in the area. So al shabaab is still an ever present threat to destabilise the country. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news britain says it might release an Iranian Oil Tanker seized by its troops off gibraltar on the condition it does not go on to syria in breach of eu sanctions. The uks foreign secretary says he told iran that after due process in gibraltars courts, his country would facilitate the ships release. Senior venezuelan officials have led a march through the streets of the capital, caracas, in protest against a recently published un report. The report was published last week by the un human rights chief, michelle bachelet, and it accuses the government of widespread human rights abuses against opposition activists. The government says the findings are biased and aimed at discrediting president nicolas maduro. Torrential monsoon rain across south asia has caused widespread flooding and landslides. Dozens of people have been killed as floods engulf parts of nepal, assam and bangladesh. Heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming days. Jill mcgivering reports. These are the straits of nepals capital, kathmandu, the river here swollen by days of torrential rain has finally burst its banks, swallowing everything. The Rushing Water has brought down power lines, and left vehicles of all sizes are submerged. Flooding is common on nepals planes, but scenes like this and kathmandu are much more rare. In the indian state of assam, whole villages have disappeared underwater. Escaping to Higher Ground isnt easy, makeshift bridges have been thrown up, but moving around is dangerous, especially when many here cannot swim. And they risk losing everything, homes, crops and livestock. Assam also has wildlife to protect, the flood are rising rapidly in its national park, a sanctuary for many animals, including the endangered 1 horned rhino. This is where many villagers are now making camp, in shelters along the roads and other patches of high ground. The rains have also hit bangladesh and the refugee camps. Hundreds of thousands of rohingyas flood here from neighbouring myanmar. Now, they face new hardships flooding and landslides. Torrential monsoon rains cause annual misery across the region, in places, it is made worse by poor Water Management and the rapid felling of trees. There is no sign of an end to the heavy rain in the days to come. In hong kong, police have clashed with demonstrators, angry at the presence of traders from mainland china. The visitors bulk buy products in hong kong and take them home to sell, which the protesters claim is a form of tax avoidance. Police have used batons and pepper spray on the crowds. The bbcs Stephen Mcdonell reports from the scene. This seems to be the new normal in hong kong. Every weekend, there are a rolling series of protests which at any stage, could turn into a conflict with the police. They start off as a march and then at the end, those who i suppose you could say are at their more radical end of the protest movement, are really taking it up to the authorities. Police here also showing that their tolerance for the tactics of these protesters is growing smaller and smaller. Now, they are turning out in big numbers again. You can see rows of riot police here in this shopping district tonight. Even though most of the demonstrators have gone home, they have decided to push them out of the streets and clean out the area. They are calling out warnings for people to leave, the riot police have decided that the time for this protest to come to an end is now. They are moving towards these makeshift barricades to pull them apart. And in big numbers, they are going to return this shopping district to the way that it was. The thing is, it is hard to see how this is going to finish because on the one hand, beijing is not going to easily give people in hong kong genuine universal suffrage, not without a fight. But on the other hand, these protesters now at least many amongst them, they are not going to give up, unless they have genuine one person one vote democracy in hong kong. This is bbc world news today. The latest headlines hurricane barry has weakened back to a Tropical Storm but Officials Say the danger of flooding is not over. Lets get more now on the storm barry now. Im joined now by Louisiana State climatologist dr barry keim. First of all, just describe what is happening where you are. Sure, the storm made landfall about three hours ago, at a town called intercoastal city, louisiana, it is about 50 miles south of latvia and just south west of the city of new o rlea ns, just south west of the city of new orleans, the storm is moving very slowly, that is one of the biggest problem is that we are facing here. It is moving at about six miles per hour, a typical storm for prospective moves at about 10 15 mph, so the storm will hang around for twice the duration of your average storm, and what it is doing here is producing quite a bit of wind, it is taking sizeable branches of trees, some trees have been uprooted, and we are having periodic rain, wind driven rain, so in my location, im probably 75 miles away from where the eye of the storm is located, so conditions are most certainly worse there, but i tell you, it is even pretty interesting here. The biggest problem we are facing is heavy rainfall. The storm is moving so slow and will hang around for such a long time that the weather predictions say it is falling from 10 15 inches of rain, and while that is not unprecedented here, it certainly will put some serious stress on the Drainage Networks and we are likely to see some serious flooding across the region. Put this in the context of Hurricane Season, is this normal and regular . Yes, this is not totally atypical. It is probably a little early to have a hurricane. Normally, the core of Hurricane Season is from the core of Hurricane Season is from the middle part of august through till early october, that is when the sea surface temperatures are running at their warmest, that is the energy that feeds the storm. We are certainly within Hurricane Season, and we have had earlier strummed than this, historically, in 1957, we had hurricane audrey coming and sweeping up our shores, a category four or hurricane in the latter part ofjune. This is not completely out ofjune. This is not completely out of the ordinary, but unfortunately, it is coinciding with a very late season it is coinciding with a very late season flood on the Mississippi River, and that is giving us a whole host of new problems that we have never faced before, and host of new problems that we have neverfaced before, and a lot is going to be learned in this particular event, so we are learning on the fly. Talking of learning, the one thing that looms over this is hurricane katrina. Do you think lessons have been learned . Are people much better at using scientists like yourself to model these things and prepare and warn people . We have come a long way in the forecasting. This storm was forecast probably six or seven days ago, when it was a tiny blip on a map, it up in the state of tennessee, on land. So, there have been some phenomenal forecasting, and with katrina, there were so many Lessons Learned here in terms of the wea k Lessons Learned here in terms of the weak links Lessons Learned here in terms of the weaklinks in our Lessons Learned here in terms of the weak links in our defence system, in terms of coping with all the water and storm surge and things of that nature, and it exposed everything and we have made so many corrections to the system that we are much better off today than we were 15 yea rs better off today than we were 15 years ago or so when katrina hit. A thatis years ago or so when katrina hit. A that is good to hear. Very interesting to talk to you, thank you very much. My pleasure. The social media giant facebook is facing a record 5 billion fine in a settlement with us regulators over breaches of its users privacy and data security. The personal information of millions of facebook users was gathered and passed on to another company, Cambridge Analytica, which then targeted users with political messages. Our techology correspondent dave lee reports from san francisco. Facebook has become the largest player in social media. It has more than 2 billion users. The network and data it holds on these users is now one of the worlds most valuable commodities, but that failed to protect that information. Users personal details including ages, marital status, even political leanings, were harvested. Mark zuckerberg has apologised but now regulators are set to impose a massive 5 billion fine on that company. Five years ago around 300,000 facebook users took part in a personality quiz. It gathered information on them and their facebook friends. Around 87 million people. It is claimed the data was used for political purposes including helping elect donald trump to the white house. It is alleged the british political consultancy Cambridge Analytica bought the data and use it to identify potential supporters and send them political messages. Facebook has consistently, aggressively violated privacy and in the us i believe it is a calibrated decision. It is it isa it is a calculated decision. I think the company has prioritised growth at any cost. Facebook has said nothing about the huge penalty. This record fine is unlikely. It is unlikely to satisfy washington. Many democrats and some republicans have criticised the penalty of one of the worlds Richest Companies as merely a slap on the wrist. Chettem has all the sport. Hello and thanks forjoining us. Simona halep produced the performance of her career, as she beat Serena Williams to win her first wimbledon title. The talk before todays ladies final was about whether serena would win a record equalling grand slam title. But she was sensationally beaten in under an hour as andy swiss reports it was the day one wimbledon dream was realised whilst another was ruthlessly dashed. Serena williams had emerged to royal approval in search of a record equalling 24th grand slam title but simona halep clearly hadnt read the script. Halep won the first four games in 11 magical minutes. What a start. Taking the first set in a blaze of brilliance. Desperately, williams dug deep, at last some flickers of that familiar fire. They were soon snuffed out. In less than an hour, it was all over. Simona halep is the wimbledon champion. Cue delight and utter disbelief. Halep had produced the performance of her life and her opponent knew it. She literally played out of her mind, congratulations simona. It was my mums dream. When i was ten she said if i want to do something in tennis, i have to play the final of wimbledon so the day came. Thanks to my parents. What drama the fans have seen. Most were expecting to watch Serena Williams make history. Instead, they have a new champion. And as a fan of the duchess of cambridge, things got even better. Really, well done. A quick chat before even more cheers. For simona halep, the perfect ending to a near perfect performance. Valtteri bottas has beaten his team mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position by the tiniest of margins at the british grand prix. The finn finished ahead of the five time World Champion byjust 6 thousandths of a second. Hamilton was looking to secure his fifth consecutive pole at silverstone. Mercedes locked out the front row for sundays race with Ferraris Charles Leclerc third. Stage eight of the Tour De France was another eventful one for defending champion geraint thomas. He managed to recover from a crash with 15 kilometres of the race remaining to finish alongside most of his main rivals on the tour. You can just about see it happening here in these pictures. Belgiums Thomas De Gendt won after a stage long breakaway, thomas is fifth overall, one minute and 12 seconds behind the leaderjulian alaphilippe. England captain eoin morgan says it would mean everything to win sundays cricket World Cup Final against new zealand at lords. Its the first time the hosts have made it to the final since 1992, whilst their opponents were runners up four years ago. At one stage it looked like england wouldnt make it out of the group. But momentum is with them and their captain after brilliant wins over india, new zealand and australia in the semis. Its that far removed, that i never evenin its that far removed, that i never even in my wildest dreams dreamt of it. It is awesome, i dreamt of hitting the runs in the World Cup Final, i never dreamti hitting the runs in the World Cup Final, i never dreamt i would delete my country out in a World Cup Final, so that probably sums up how much it means. Have you thought about how you feel as you did them out tomorrow at lords . Now, i will try and take in as much as i can, as long as it doesnt affect performance. It is a great occasion, to go out and when i world cup, that doesnt come around very often. Thats all the sport for now. After weeks of delays one of the most significant Russian SpaceScience Missions in recent years has successfully launched from kazakhstan. The proton m rocket blasted off from the byekuhnoor cosmodrome carrying the spektr rg telescope that will map x rays across the entire sky in unprecedented detail. The hope is that spektr rg can provide fresh insights into how galaxies expand, black holes and dark matter. Peter pray deal is head of the mission with the erosita x ray telescope one of the main pieces of hardware on board the rocket. He says they are hoping to find out more about dark energy which makes up a large part of our universe. In simple terms, we hope to learn something about the universe in general, and about dark energy in particular. Erosita is an x ray telescope, where we see the hot universe, hot universe means temperatures between one million and 100 million degrees, much hotter than the sun, and from that, we can learn a couple of things. We want to see and detect 100,000 clusters of galaxies, and these are the heaviest, or the most massive entities in the universe, and luckily for us, they consist not only of galaxies, but also embedded in very hot plasma, hot gas, the temperature of 100 million degrees, therefore, we can detect them with an x ray telescope. That is how we end this edition of bbc world news today. Thank you for your company, i will see you soon. Hello, we have been chasing quite large amounts of cloud around today, for some, plenty of sunshine, that was the case in guernsey this afternoon, barely a cloud in the sky. For others, the cloud has been more extensive, this was taken around about the same time in suffolk. For others, we have had some hefty showers, particularly across eastern scotland, the pennines, down into the midlands, some of those lingering four times even, starting to lose their energy, but a few drizzly showers may work their way down to the south east corner. Foremost, a dry night, large amounts of cloud, the skier clearest of the skies across south western scotland, wales, into sunday, an area of High Pressure building from the west. We have had some stronger wind today, and it should start to lose some of the strength. We will keep a couple of showers going, despite the area of High Pressure, particularly across the southern uplands, the pennines, Higher Ground of wales, and maybe across Southern Coasts for a time. Foremost, a dry day, large amount of cloud, but it will thin and break and so we will see some spells of sunshine, particularly across northern ireland, feeling warmer here tomorrow, and foremost, fairly light wind, apart from some eastern coasts, still a brisk breeze here, so taking the edge off of highs of 1819. It so taking the edge off of highs of 18 19. It would be tomorrow, 19 23 asa 18 19. It would be tomorrow, 19 23 as a top temperature. Some are fine conditions for the final of the cricket world cup at lords. A fair amount of cloud around through one, that will thin and break, some sunshine in the afternoon, temperatures getting up to around 21 celsius. Into monday, a similar day, we have this area of High Pressure, so foremost, it is dry. I suspect we will see hardly any showers at all on monday. Best of the sunshine through the morning, the cloud will build it through the afternoon, temperatures up a notch, 19 24 by the time we get to monday. As we head through tuesday and wednesday, we still have this area of High Pressure in charge, but notice what is happening in the atlantic, frontal systems are starting to work their way eastwards, so by the time we get to thursday, most of us will probably see some rain. But for tuesday and wednesday, most staying mainly dry, good spells of sunshine, and temperatures are starting to rise again. A turning wetter by the time get a thursday and friday. Bye bye.
