Coming up in the sport later in the hour on bbc news, george ford returns for england. He is in the starting xv for their Rugby World Cup semifinal against the reigning champions new zealand. Good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. Police have released more details about the 39 people found dead in a refrigerated lorry in essex. They are all believed to have been chinese nationals, and they include eight women and 31 men. The driver of the lorry, mo robinson, has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and is being questioned. Officers in Northern Ireland have raided three houses and the National Crime agency said it was trying to identify organised Crime Networks which may have been involved. Essex police say the case is the largest Murder Investigation in its history. Lets join our correspondentjon kay whos in grays in essex where the lorry was found. Yes, the discovery that was made in that quiet road in the middle of this Industrial Estate in the early hours of yesterday morning have now escalated from essex into a Major International investigation. The news in the last hour or so the 39 people found dead here came from china means the authorities in beijing are now involved in trying to identify those who died. We understand the lorry was registered in bulgaria. So, the authorities in bulgaria asking questions, as well as in belgium where the refrigeration unit began its journey gcioss refrigeration unit began its journey across the channel. So many questions, so many people asking questions, so many people asking questions and hear as well in Northern Ireland and in essex. Remembering 39 strangers. People living near the scene have been reflecting upon the dozens of chinese nationals found dead just after they arrived in britain. Their desperation shows that this society we live in is not right somewhere. Just think of the people that were in the van, in the lorry, and trying to find a new life and not succeeding, unfortunately. The bulgarian registered lorry and refrigeration trailer have now been driven away from the quiet road where the discovery was made. The police say, one by one, the 39 bodies will be removed in private and with dignity. 31 men and eight women. The start of what is likely to be a lengthy and complex identification process. Essex police are still questioning the lorry driver on suspicion of murder. He has been named locally as 25 year old mo robinson from portadown in county armagh. Three properties in Northern Ireland have been searched by police. So what do we know about this weeks incident . According to the belgian authorities, the container arrived in the port of zeebrugge at around 2 30pm on tuesday. It left there later that afternoon, heading across the channel. It arrived in purfleet in essex just after midnight and at 1 05am yesterday, the trailer was collected by a lorry. About half an hour later, and a couple of miles away, ambulance staff discovered the bodies of 39 adults inside the container on the waterglade industrial park. News that the dead are all from china will bring back memories of another incident nearly 20 years ago, when 58 chinese immigrants were found suffocated inside a lorry in dover. It took months for some of them to be identified. Since then, checks at major ports have increased, but critics say quieter ports like purfleet can still be vulnerable. There is simply not enough being done in terms of security, the protection of vehicles across europe. We need to be working far more with the europeans but you know, therein lies an issue in terms of brexit and how close we can influence some of the things that need to be done to try and stop these things from happening. That is just one area that is now being considered. Police are stressing these are very early days, the start of a long, complex, international investigation. So, news confirmed by essex police in the last hour or so that 31 of these victims were men from china and eight of them were women. Yesterday we understood one of them might have been a teenager but it seems that is no longer the case, we understand they are all adults. Essex police say this is the biggest Murder Investigation they have ever begun. One man still in custody being questioned by officers this lunchtime and, meanwhile, churches and Community Halls around here have opened their doors for vigils where people can express their shock and dismay. Jon kay, thank you. Our correspondent, jon kay. In a moment, ill be talking to robin brant in shanghai but first to Anna Holligan is in zeebrugge. What are police focusing on . So, the prosecutors in belgium are focusing on three key questions. First of all where did this container begin its journey. First of all where did this container begin itsjourney. Second what movements in belgium, could these people have boarded here . And, third, how did that container managed to cross the sea to the uk with 39 people hidden inside. So, in terms of port security, the Harbour Master in zeebrugge has told the bbc the trucks are filled as they enter this port and the driver is identified. Those with a canvas cover a re identified. Those with a canvas cover are checked with a c02 sensor to check any signs of breathing but if they have a closed top it isnt a standard procedure if there are no signs the seal has been tampered with. The local mayor says 4000 containers make this crossing every single day and on average about 50 migrants are picked up here every month. So, the fact these people we re month. So, the fact these people were trying to cross to the uk from here in zeebrugge isnt unusual but what is is their nationality. One local Police Officer who patrols these roads at night says this is these roads at night says this is the first time he had ever heard about chinese nationals trying to board these lorries here. Well robin brant, in shanghai, what are the factors in china that would push people to take such desperate risks . Look, there are very similar cases backin look, there are very similar cases back in 2000, jon kay mentioned 50 Chinese People found in the back of a lorry in denver. Slightly similar in Morecambe Bay when 23 cockle pickers died. The chinese economy was very different then, this is a far Richer Country now so the pull factors, so to speak, might be different. There are some reports these people may have come from the south of where i am now, a place known for its entrepreneurialism and its my gay both legal and illegal. Its migrator re history, both legal and illegal. Or they may come from the muslim part of china but those people are simply trying to get out of the area let alone china. Maybe these are workers, and there are 31 men, Chinese Workers outside of china looking to go further afield and ending up tragically in the uk. The reality is we dont know. Maybe this is about what it is about four lots of people who seek to move countries, maybe they have family in the uk and that is the pull. At this stage, we just dont know. 0k, robin brant many thanks. Robin brant in shanghai and Anna Holligan in zeebrugge. With the brexit deadline of october 3ist exactly a week away, both the conservatives and labour are facing divisions about the way forward. Downing street has dismissed reports of diffirences of opinion within the cabinet. Borisjohnson has said hell seek a snap general election if the eu decides on an extension to the timetable untiljanuary. But some ministers want him to try and get his deal through parliament first. Our Political Correspondent nick eardley reports. Not for the first time, westminster waits. The uk was supposed to leave the eu a week today, but a delay now seems likely, so politicians here wait to see how long an extension brussels will offer and whether the government follows through on its threat to try and force an election. We have been calling for a general election for months. At some point, the labour party will realise that their blocking tactics, propped up by the lib dems and the snp, have got to come to an end. The british people want their government to govern. But not everyone thinks an election is the best solution. Some think number ten should have another go at getting its brexit legislation through parliament. They believe that a vote to pass the deal in full is there. We are this close now, i appreciate the 31st of october was a totemic date but we have something on the table, lets give it time for us to conclude the scrutiny in parliament. And there is no easy route to securing an election. The government is likely to need the backing of two thirds of mps, meaning labours support would be crucial and it isnt quite champing at the bit, urging the government instead to consider giving more time for scrutiny of its deal. Of course we will support a general election but i would be quite sad. Before christmas . I would be quite sad honestly, having been offered a pragmatic compromise, that it would be viewed as quite unreasonable for the Prime Minister to not put his bill through parliament. Many other labour mps are urging caution, worried about the polls and more keen on another referendum. As things stand, the government has no plans to bring its deal back before parliament and if brussels does offer a long extension, it says it will push for an election. At that point, mps have a choice to try and continue to find some kind of compromise that has so far proved elusive, or to go back to the public. Westminster wont have to wait much longer. The eu is expected to make its decision on an extension tomorrow. But, as ever, there is little certainty over what decisions will be made here. Nick eardley, bbc news, westminster. Lets speak now to our assistant Political Editor norman smith in westminster. Do you sense a tassle going on in both main parties . On the face of it, you would say mr johnsons position is pretty clear. He believes there should be a general election this winter to break the brexit deadlock and there isnt much point, he believes, talking to the labour party because they are never going to help him out. But i wonder if we are now arriving at think again thursday. Because there are a growing number of influential tories who are putting their hand up and sing, hang on, winter election, not to such a good idea. It is even clear mr johnson can trigger one because under one roof, the so called fixed term parliaments act, hed have to get the backing of the labour party to get that, and under another route, hed have to support another route, hed have to support a vote of no confidence in his own government which, lets be honest, isnt the greatest election slogan. I have no confidence in myself. So, there are more and more tories beginning to say perhaps we should have another go at bringing the bill back and trying to get it through the commons because mrjohnson did get a majority on the broad principles behind the bill and perhaps if there are some labour mps who are tempted to support it, he would get it through. And we learned there is expected there is likely to bea there is expected there is likely to be a meeting of cabinet ministers this afternoon. Could that tussle over tactics be fought out there . We shall see. Norman smith, thanks. The number of people found carrying knives in england and wales has risen to a record level. The latest figures also show that the proportion of repeat offenders has reached a new high. Our home affairs correspondent, danny shaw is here. Just talk us through the figures. These are figures that cover the number of people caught in possession of a knife, so they are carrying a knife. And what this shows is for the 12 months, there we re shows is for the 12 months, there were 14,200 offences which were dealt with by the criminal justice system, in other words people were given a caution, a warning or convicted of an offence. Thats the highest number since 2009 when these figures were first compiled and is a 6 increase on last year. In fact, the numbers have been going up since about 2013 and when you look at the quarterly figures for every three months they show no sign of slowing down. Now, whats happening to these offenders . These statistics are interesting because they show increasing numbers are going to prison, about two in every five offences a re prison, about two in every five offences are dealt with a sentence offences are dealt with a sentence of imprisonment and the average sentence is eight months which is longer than it used to be in the past. Interestingly enough, about a third of offenders who are convicted ofa third of offenders who are convicted of a repeat offence are not going to prison despite laws which are intended for that to happen. And an increasing proportion of these offences a re increasing proportion of these offences are committed by people who have offended previously. The number is approaching a third of those. Thatll be a worry because what it suggests is that the first time they are being sentenced, that sentence is not effective. Ok, many thanks. Humberside police have charged a 25 year old man with the rape and murder of the University Student libby squire. The 21 year old went missing in february and her body was found in a river a month later. 25 year old pawel relowicz, from hull, is due in court next week. A court in bangladesh has sentenced 16 people to death for the murder of a female student who was set on fire, after accusing her head teacher of sexual harassment. The murder of Nusratjahan Rafi in april shocked the country and led to a series of protests demanding justice. From dhaka, our correspondent Akbar Hossain reports. The convicted murderers were taken away from the court in one of the fastest trials in the countrys history. Among them, the headmaster, two teachers, two local politicians and two female classmates of the murdered girl. The murder of Nusratjahan Rafi shocked the nation. She was set on fire on the roof of her school after she had reported the headmaster for touching her inappropriately. The headmaster, siraj ud doula, who had been arrested for sexual harassment, apparently ordered her death from his prison cell. The police say that it was supposed to look like a suicide but nusrat escaped and managed to make a statement to her brother before she died. Translation the trial was completed really fast. I want to thank our media. Our Prime Minister learned about it because of their hard work. Police have been looking after us all this time. Nusrats case has sparked mass protests in the country, where victims of Sexual Assault rarely go public. Nusrats family has been placed under police protection. Akbar hossain, bbc news, feni, in bangladesh. Our top story this lunchtime. Police say all 39 people found dead in a lorry in essex were chinese nationals. And coming up, we hearfrom someone who made the journey across continents to the uk in the back of a lorry. Coming up in the sport in the next 15 minutes on bbc news. The date is set former ufc champion Conor Mcgregor says he will return to the octagon in the new year in las vegas. The remains of the dictator who ruled spain for nearly four decades, general franco, have been exhumed from a vast mausoleum in madrid, and are being reburied in a low key grave. Franco led spains fascists in a brutal civil war in the 19305, which claimed the lives of around half a million people. His reburial was a key pledge of the socialist government. His family tried unsuccessfully to prevent it in the courts. Our correspondent guy hedgecoe reports. The remains of francisco franco, removed by members of his family from his final resting place, the valley of the fallen, a controversial site. Built by franco himself using republican prisoners between 1940 and 1959, many feel it glorifies his legacy. Franco came to power in 1939 after defeating the leftist republican government in the civil war. He carried out reprisals after the conflict, killing tens of thousands of spaniards. Under his so called National Catholic ideology, political and social freedoms were repressed. Many spaniards were driven into exile. He died in 1975 and was buried in the catholic basilica at the valley of the fallen with state honours. After his death, the country made the transition to democracy, but the issue of francos legacy has been a sensitive one. While franco had his supporters, the new socialist government which took office last year made the exhumation a priority. It overcame a legal challenge from the franco family, which opposed the process. Challenge from the franco family, which opposed the processlj challenge from the franco family, which opposed the process. I feel rage, it has been used as propaganda and publicity for the next elections. Francos remains have been flown by helicopter to a cemetery on the outskirts of madrid, where they will be reburied in a family plot later today. More now on our top story, the deaths of 39 people, thought to be chinese, found in a refrigerated trailer in essex. Ahmad al rashid knows of the dangers and risks of travelling across continents in the back of a lorry. He left syria in 2015, making it to britain after 55 days. He told us his story. I mean, thejourney itself was a long journey, almost 55 days, crossing, you know, starting from the borders of syria to the united kingdom. It involved crossing many borders but also, like, seas, you know, and land borders. This is calais port. The most difficult and most dangerous part was in france, in calais, because this is where lots of criminal activity was going on. So you are talking about calais and dunkirk, specifically, where smugglers would just be putting people in the back of lorries and just sending them off, not knowing where they were headed. So i think this was one of the most difficult stages of the journey. It was quite dangerous because you have people, you know, putting you in the back of the lorry, sometimes in the fridges and freezers. I mean, one of the times i was put in the back of a freezer with other people, you know, with frozen chicken and meat. And it was, i dont know how, it was freezing cold in there, and you couldnt do anything. They said it was going to be two hours, then it would be the end, but after two hours, the lorry did not move and then people started coughing and, you know, freezing. This is when you have to knock and knock and knock and you are at the mercy of the smugglers to come and get you out because it is all locked from the outside. Ive made it. After almost two months from leaving syria, now i am in the uk. Many people dont have an option but to leave, and this was the case for me because when i first fled, it was an issue of survival. I needed to survive. But then, when you are out of the bombing and shelling, you are also, as a human being, it is human nature, you also need to survive, to think ahead, for the future of yourself and your children and what you want to do. And now i look back at the journey, i think it is impossible, its crazy, i should never have done it. But if i go back to that situation at that exact time, the bombing and shelling and the desperation, i think i would still do it. Nhs patients in england are for the first time to be given full access to three drugs for cystic fibrosis. Wales looking to reach their first ever world cup final. It should be some weekend. Indeed, many thanks, andy swiss, there. Leading democrats in the us have accused their republican rivals of compromising national security, after more than 20 of them forced their way into the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. The hearings are considering whether mr trump put pressure on ukraine to investigate one of his political rivals. Richard galpin reports. This is the moment a group of republican lawmakers moved in to disrupt the ongoing impeachment inquiry. Lets see if we can get in. It followed encouragement from President Trump for tougher action against the attempt to impeach him. The republicans here demanding the hearing be open, as they say happened in previous impeachments. The press was in the room for nixon and clinton. The Legal Counsel for the president was allowed in the room. All of that is being denied by the chairman, running this one sided, soviet style scam. The republicans extraordinary move on what is a secure facility prevented this witness, laura cooper, a us defense official, from giving evidence forfour hours. This is, as you can imagine, also an effort to intimidate witnesses who seek to come forward. The witness was in the hearing room at the time that republicans started to come in. They will not stop us in pursuing the truth. Earlier this week, the Us Ambassador to ukraine, william taylor, gave damaging evidence at the impeachment inquiry. He said donald trump had asked the ukrainian president to investigate joe biden, a potential rival for mr trump in the us election next year. And that mr trump had said providing military aid to ukraine would depend on the investigation being announced. Despite the smiles at this meeting yesterday, the pressure on donald trump is steadily increasing. He calls the impeachment inquiry a witch hunt, but testimony against him is building up. Richard galpin, bbc news. Now, if youre the biggest selling british band of the 21st century, youre probably confident enough to look for new ways for publicise your new album. Coldplay have adopted a low key method of revealing the names of the tracks in theirupcoming album. Theyve been listed in the classified adverts of a local newspaper in north wales. Our entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson has the story. It contains some flashing images. Coldplay. Big band, small ads. Announcing the track listing for their first album in four years in the classified section of the northwest daily post. The advert for everyday life appeared next to one for a second hand fridge freezer £50 and another for a small bale of hay. It turns out the newspaper didnt even realise what a scoop they had in their own pages. Someone phoned us up late afternoon, a private caller, didnt say who they were, but pointed out that the advert had been put in the paper and it hadnt been anywhere else, just in our paper. Turns out it had been in a couple of others but, anyway. We dont know who it was, it may have been someone from the Record Company because, to be honest, it is inspired marketing, it really is. And the reason coldplay chose the paper . Their guitarist, jonny buckland, grew up near mold, explaining on social media that he once had a holidayjob at the paper, placing the photos of houses that were on sale, adding that he wasnt very good at it. In recent years, acts have tried different ways to make a splash with the release of an album. In 2016, beyonces lemonade appeared online overnight if as a complete surprise. This arriving from nowhere tactic is now known in the industry as doing a beyonce. Back in 2007, radiohead broke new ground with in rainbows, letting fans pay what they felt it was worth. U2s new album, songs of innocence, is going out for free. While in 2014, u2 infuriated many by signing a deal with apple, meaning their album appeared forfree on iphones all around the world, whether people wanted it or not. Coldplays tactics have gone down better. The thing is now because of streaming, everyone releasing music on a friday, it is just so jam packed with marketing ploys and big album launches, that finding these viral guerilla techniques to get new music out there is so unique and i think coldplay has smashed it, really. And with all the interest surrounding the coldplay album, it seems likely that, when it comes out in november, itll sell enough for them to be able to afford a few second hand fridges, or even a bale of hay. Colin paterson, bbc news. A 10 year old boy has been called a hero for helping to rescue his mother after she was seriously injured on a mountain in argyll. The boy climbed down a 100 metre ravine to reach his mother, who had fallen on ben cruachan, then used her phone to call for help. He stayed with her and kept talking to her to prevent her losing consciousness until the Emergency Services arrived. Oban mountain rescue said the boy was a brave lad who should get an award for his actions. Time for a look at the weather. Heres chris fawkes. Hello, some chilly air coming our way over the next 12 hours but before we get there, its been quite murky this morning with mist and fog getting washed out of the atmosphere thanks to a heavy band of rain. Over the next 12 hours, the main feature of the weather is cold air working in. It is fair to say the coldest air that we have seen so far this autumn working on across the northern half of the uk. Weather wise, through the rest of this afternoon, heavy outbreaks of rain across eastern areas of england come up with localised
