For the first time in nearly a century, the us capital is celebrating a baseball world series title. The us house of representatives has endorsed the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. The vote was almost entirely along party lines, with democrats supporting it, and republicans against. Its only the third time in modern history that the house has voted against a sitting president. Democrats are looking into whether President Trump betrayed his oath of office by trying to get a foreign power to investigate his political rival. As Laura Trevelyan now reports, its clear mr trump and House Speaker nancy pelosi are on a collision course. On this vote the yeas are 232, the nays are 196. A historic moment. A house of representatives votes to formalise an impeachment enquiry into the president. On the table. Did donald trump create a high crime and misdemeanour in trying to strong arm the ukrainian president into investigating joe biden . Thats the accusation. The house divided almost entirely on party lines. Only a couple of democrats voted with the republicans. Nancy pelosi, the House Speaker, was never an enthusiastic supporter of impeachment. Now she says the enquiry is essential. I dont know why the republicans are afraid of the truth. Every member should support allowing the American People to hear the facts for themselves. This. That is really what this vote is about. Its about the truth. And what is at stake . What is at stake in all of this is nothing less than our democracy. Republicans have focused more on the process in congress, rather than the accusation that the president abused his power in that phone call with ukraines leader, volodymyr zelensky. House republicans say this is an unjust attempted coup against their leader by democrats who fear losing to him in 2020. Not only did every single republican reject this soviet style impeachment process, but we were even joined by democrats who couldnt stand it anymore. If you look at where we are right now, were at an important point in history. Clearly there are people that we serve with that dont like the results of the 2016 election. The president s political ally in britain, nigel farage, had mr trump is a call in guest on his radio show today. The us leader says he did nothing wrong. Because its a hoax. And, you know, high crimes and misdemeanours . Well, whats a high crime and misdemeanour when you have a very appropriate conversation . Now, fortunately, we have the transcript. This vote allows the house to discuss the evidence against the president , with public hearings and a vote. If it passes, then us senators act as jurors in a trial. And if two thirds of senators find him guilty, donald trump will be removed from office, the first time that would have ever happened. But if the vote goes along party lines, which right now seems likely, the president will be safe. But nothing is certain and Public Opinion could shift during the hearings. 0ne things for sure buckle up for the partisan fight to come. Laura trevelyan, bbc news, washington. 0fficials investigating a deadly fire that swept through a train pakistan say it started when a gas cylinder being used by passengers to cook breakfast exploded. An investigation by bbc news arabic has found women being put up for sale online in kuwait as Domestic Workers. A un expert has described it as an illegal online slave market. The investigation found that instagram, which is owned by facebook, along with apps available on google and apple, are being used to trade people without their knowledge or consent. One app user even offered to sell a 16 Year Old Girl to the bbcs undercover team. Jess kelly reports. In the gulf, women employed as Domestic Workers are being sold online via apps approved and provided by google and apple. Bbc news arabic went undercover in kuwait to expose this shocking and disturbing online trade. Its a trade made possible by Silicon Valley tech giants. If google, apple, facebook or any other company is promoting apps like these, hosting apps like these, they are promoting an online slave market. The bbc team spoke to 57 users of an app called asale. Its available on google play and the apple app store. Domestic workers are sold on asale alongside cars and tvs. The team found violations of international and domestic laws on modern slavery and human trafficking. Most women have no idea theyre being advertised for sale online. One app user tried to sell a child to our team. And another, a policeman, encouraged them to break kuwaiti laws. In the gulf, a Domestic Workers visa is tied to their sponsor. They cannot quit theirjob or leave the country without their sponsors permission. Thats the problem with that kind of system, is that the employer thinking that they own already worker but it doesnt, it shouldnt be the situation. Kuwait has some of the strongest laws to protect Domestic Workers in the region. But apps like 4sale, instagram and in saudi, haraj, allow employers to sell the sponsorship of these workers for a profit. No legal action has been taken against the policeman or the women who tried to sell us a child. They both declined the bbcs request for comment. Asale has now removed its Domestic Workers section. They gave us the following reply kuwaits government didnt comment further. Facebook, which owns instagram, told us but we found hundreds of posts on instagram using similar hashtags being used to sell Domestic Workers. Apps in other countries are still offering Domestic Workers for sale. Haraj, the commodity app used in saudi arabia, did not provide us with a statement. Both google and apple told the bbc that this type of behaviour has no place on their Application Stores and that they are working with App Developers to better prevent illegal activity like this on their platforms. Jess kelly, bbc news. Scientists believe measles is even more dangerous than earlier thought because it can make children vulnerable to other infections. This year the us saw the worst Measles Outbreak in decades and doctors pushed for children to be vaccinated. Our medical correspondent fergus walsh reports. The measles virus is highly contagious. Last year there were around 1,000 cases of the respiratory infection in the uk and it can cause serious complications, even death. Measles can be prevented by two doses of the mmr vaccine but uptake has fallen. Now researchers have shown how measles can put people at risk of other diseases. In two studies, more than 100 dutch children who had not been vaccinated had their blood analysed before and after a Measles Outbreak. Before they caught measles the children had lots of immune memory cells which were primed to defend them against diseases theyd previously encountered, but the measles virus wiped out these memory cells. And the virus also destroyed naive immune cells which act as sentries, patrolling against pathogens so it made them less able to respond to new infections as well. Much of the research was carried out at the Welcome Sanger Institute near cambridge where scientists sequenced the genetic code of the immune cells to reveal how the measles virus attacks them. Measles virus removed immune memory cells had created in response to other pathogens they had seen before and it also returned their immune system back to a baby like state where theyre no longer protected to pathogens they were exposed to before. But also they had limited ability to respond to new pathogens. After measles infection, some children show signs of immune suppression for up to five years. This research underlines the importance of measles vaccination, notjust to protect against that virus but against other Infectious Diseases as well. The uk recently lost its measles free status and there are concerns that a major outbreak could occur unless mmr vaccine rates improve. Fergus walsh, bbc news, cambridge. Stay with us on bbc news. The top story this hour the us house of representatives has decided to move its impeachment investigation into President Trump into a public phase. Future hearings will be televised. Staying with that story now, i asked our washington correspondent Chris Buckler how damaging it is to the whole process that this vote has been split along party lines. I think truthfully, lewis, it was inevitable. It was it was going to be case that democrats and republicans would choose sides in this fight. And, really, what is going to be important in the next few weeks ahead is just how these proceedings are conducted in public, because up to now weve had these closed door sessions, and even then weve had republicans at one stage invading one of the hearings and very much saying that they felt that there was no transparency in what was happening. Now, were going to see some of that taking place out in the open. And i think what youre going to find in washington is, if you felt it was divided up to this point, prepare yourself. Its going to get a lot worse to come. And the reality is this is going to be a bitter process on the way to a vote on whether or not to impeach president donald trump. And, ultimately, it is going to leave democrats and republicans both saying very, very strong things, and i dont think theres any chance of the two sides coming together. President trump has been speaking to one of the leading forces behind brexit, nigel farage, as the country gears up for decembers general election. Mr trump criticised Prime Minister borisjohnsons chief rival, jeremy corbyn. Jon sopel reports. The us president and nigel farage are close. We made 23june our independence day, when we smashed the establishment. The Brexit Party Leader has spoken at trump rallies. Mr nigel farage. And the us president returned the favour and appeared on mr farages radio show. And he waded into the british general election with alacrity, in breach of all normal tradition. His first target was the opposition leader, jeremy corbyn. And corbyn would be so bad for your country. Hed be so bad, hed take you in such a bad way. Mr corbyn tweeted this in response. In the interview, the president also seemed to advocate a Johnson Farage marriage. I have great relationships with many of the leaders, including boris. Hes a fantastic man and i think hes the exact right guy for the times, i know that you and him will end up doing something that could be terrific, if you and he get together as, you know, an unstoppable force. 3. 5 years ago, brexiteers were incensed when barack obama came to london at David Camerons request to argue why britain should vote to remain in the European Union. Because ourfocus is in negotiating with a big bloc of the European Union to get a trade agreement done. And uk is going to be in the back of the queue. But that sparked a backlash, and may well have been counter productive. For all the proclaimed closeness between the president and Prime Minister, the real test of us uk relations will come with the negotiation of a post brexit trade deal. And here, the president had another little grenade to toss. He warned that the Withdrawal Agreement negotiated by mrjohnson and eu leaders might under certain circumstances make a trade deal with america impossible. This is a president who takes the view that norms are there to be shattered, and unmistakably, this is a direct intervention in the uk election. Unmistakably, it is a breach of normal protocol. What donald trump hopes to achieve by this is clear. But ask barack obama from 3. 5 years ago who he wanted to help. Sometimes interventions have unintended consequences. Jon sopel, bbc news, washington. Now, a project to help women recovering from drug addiction in afghanistan. This is bbc news. Hello. The first few days of november are looking decidedly unsettled. Were going to see wet and blustery weather across the uk, and for some of us there is the potential for stormy weather, at least for a time. That is because of low pressure drifting in from the west. Various frontal systems spiralling around the low, that means there will be some outbreaks of rain at times. But with that low pressure we will have a south westerly flow of air across during friday, and that is something considerably milder. A milder start to the day to rain outbreaks drifting across scotlands and eastwards across england. Then we see a zone of drier and potentially brighter weather before more outbreaks of rain return to northern ireland, wales and the south west by the end of the day. But those temperatures just a touch higher than they have been, particularly in the south, 15 or 16 degrees. Perhaps a bit cooler in glasgow. Into friday night, further bands of rain driving north eastwards across the country but the wind becomes an increasingly big feature of the weather, as our area of low pressure deepens. Ill show you saturdays weather chart. You can see the low here. There is a little uncertainty about the exact positioning and the exact shape of this low pressure system, but on its northern and southern flanks you can see a lot of white lines and isobars, meaning there will be some very strong wind and some outbreaks of rain just lumbering around that area of low pressure. Therell also be some drier, brighter interludes, and in the centre of the low, the potential for light wind. At the north and particularly to the south there are likely to be some very gusty winds and those wind gusts might get to 70 mph or more towards the south coast of england. So those conditions could be very stormy indeed. The potential for some travel problems and some localised disruption. Worth staying tuned into the forecast if you have plans on saturday. Into sunday, the low pressure is still with us but the white line just stretches apart a little, meaning the wind will be a little lighter. There will still be outbreaks of rain at times, but a fighting chance of seeing some dry weather and some spells of sunshine and a top temperature of 10 14 degrees.
