Crisis. Is it fair to say that its reasonable to call the green party a protest vote . Its reasonable to call the green party the most powerful but you can cast in the selection. When you look at the policies of the other parties right now, they are not putting forward any near the amount of investment. We know the climate emergency, if we dont tackle it, its going to cost us dont tackle it, its going to cost us trillions as well as threatening the very environment we all rely on to exist so right now, voting for the green party says we need a change of course and we can live larger, fuller, better lives. We can slash the cost of living and have that wonderful public transport infrastructure we really deserve, schools and hospitals that are fit for purpose. You want to spend 1 trillion to get the net zero emissions of Greenhouse Gases by 2030 in order to stabilise temperatures. Most of that you would borrow. Why do you potentially want to cripple the economy, aiming for 2030 when the highly respected committee on Climate Change says 2050 should be our target. 2050, is, by the committees only admission, us by the committees only admission, us with a 50 chance of avoiding runaway Climate Change. Just think about that. Their report said setting a legal target before 2050 is not credible. We will do what science demands, not what is deemed politically feasible. The committee is made up of eminent climate scientists, professors, researchers, academics who say 2030 is not credible. Why would anyone trust you with respect, when you say 2030 has to be the target . Business as usual is not an option. We had to do this. And right now, we need to make that kind of investment. At the end of the second world war, we have a level of debt that is much higher as proportion of gdp but we set up the welfare state, we set up the nhs. Think about the new deals put forward in america with unprecedented assessment, we have enough money to wage a war and bail out the climate was a bank, we would would have bailed out by now. The green party are pledging £100 billion a year. Where is that coming from . Thats a good question. We are being completely honest and upfront which i hope is a refreshing change where we will get the money from. £90 billion would be borrowed, public borrowing, the remainder of that £100 billion from increasing Corporation Tax to 24 which is the 0ecd average. We are in an era of unprecedented low Interest Rates and it makes sense to use that opportunity and it is going to last ten, 20, 30, 100 years. It makes sense to borrow it. More people will benefit from it so to make that investment, pulling the risk is the commonsense thing to do. Do you like the sound of that . Not us as a country, getting in more debt. What ifi country, getting in more debt. What if i told you that would create over 3 million well paid good jobs, com pletely 3 million well paid good jobs, completely restoring industry in this country. Due by that . No. If would would cut your bills on your home, see you got less energy demand, give you cheaper energy, slash the cost of public transport, give you great rail links up and down. We have been cheated and let down. We have been cheated and let down by a decade of austerity. We should have taken this opportunity when the financial crisis hit. Should have taken this opportunity when the financial crisis hiti wonder if those colossal spending promises only comes from a party that doesnt think it is going to be in power. Its interesting, after we announced we were going to break this consensus on austerity, the other parties but over themselves, having told you we cant borrow over this last decade. We are setting this last decade. We are setting this agenda in the election. You are promising to spend £236 billion more. 236 10 years. With what we spend now. Which is 842 billion pounds per year. How could the people here trust you to spend that amount of money wisely . Its going to involve a massive devolution of power to the local level. That money is not going to be held in our hands, its going to be put in the word of local communities. They are best placed to know where that money will have the greatest effect but can also add its about what we dont do in the savings we should make. Dont spend £105 billion on nuclear weapons. Dont spend £100 billion on a high speed rail when it could be put into a local transport revolution that could benefit the whole country. This is the kind of spending anybody in the room wants to see . With third rounds of applause. There is a mixture of views. I absolutely think the level of investment you are suggesting is inspiring andl of investment you are suggesting is inspiring and i think that if the labour party were suggesting it a lot of people would be getting behind that as well. I think the conservative party have told a lot of lies about the fact they have increased the National Debt and its refreshing, having lived in a country that sat austerity for the la st country that sat austerity for the last ten years, to hear a Political Party leader saying were going to increase the spending and borrowing thats not a bad thing. The level of uk debt is £1. 8 trillion. Are you happy to see that go up . If we dont tackle the climate emergency, there will be no country. You will see mass migration on a level weve never seen before. We will see food shortages. We have to take radical steps because if we dont, the future looks very, very, very grim. Lets talk about things in your ma nifesto. Lets talk about things in your manifesto. The money would spend to tackle Climate Change would go on things like decarbonise in public transport, insulating homes, ripping out polluting gas boilers in every home. Do you know how many gas boilers there are in this country . know what were proposing rip out, so people have the choice, to renew them with clean alternatives. There is probably about 40 million. overestimated. 1 million a year would have been ripping out 3000 boilers per day. Have you ever tried to get a gas engineer out . Im serious. Its not realistic. Ill give you an example of how it can be realistic. Ten years ago, we had government create incentives, when the government gives the signal, the private sector puts in money and also recognises we can save people bills. People do it because its commonsense. We have 5 Million People who are economically inactive in this country as well as the unemployed. Its an opportunity for training to provide the secure jobs. It will help service the payment, it makes sense. This is what has happened with the new deal. We can do it now. I want you to be really clear with people about what you would do, what you are promising. Your manifesto promises to ban petrol and diesel cars in ten years. To stop reduction of them. If you currently work in a car factory here in the midlands like jaguar, land rover or toyota road in derby, the job will disappear thatjob will disappear . There will be a change to new employment. A job disappear . There will be a change to new employment. Ajob in a car factory would disappear in a decade . Ajob in factory would disappear in a decade . Ajobina factory would disappear in a decade . Ajob in a carfactory may become a job producing an electric vehicle. Is the answer to the fact this job may not exist . We are in a rapidly changing environment. You got to be really clear about this. Were talking about the jobs we are going to create and the jobs we are to transition. If youve got a car factory producing petrol or diesel cars, we know this government will do ita cars, we know this government will do it a bit later, that at some point soon, we have to stop those fossil fuel cars point soon, we have to stop those fossilfuel cars and point soon, we have to stop those fossil fuel cars and have to become electric cars. Of course, jobs are going to change. I know for a fact that jaguar, land rover, they are spending record amounts of money on electric Vehicle Development so i believe jonathan wholeheartedly that these jobs are going to transition across, they will. You want everybody to have electric cars, if we can afford that. I going to do electric trains, electric aeroplanes, hows it going to work . So, on the electric cars point, i dont think it is a matter of simply trading in all the fossil fuel cars at the end of their life or when they passed their use by date and replace them with electric because we know when you produce an electric car, it takes 9 12 tons of carbon and you need that by the side of the road 95 of the time. Its an inefficient use of resources. Think of whats happened in the economy recently, over the last few years with the age of uber. I think as those cars come to the end of their lives, we need to be thinking in new ways about how we organise the transport right across the country. We cant be people over there had to make those choices but we can give them the option is to have that cheap affordable public transport the commute in the shopping one. Can ijust ask. Are the commute in the shopping one. Can i just ask. Are you the commute in the shopping one. Can ijust ask. Are you happy the commute in the shopping one. Can i just ask. Are you happy to the commute in the shopping one. Can ijust ask. Are you happy to give up ijust ask. Are you happy to give up your petrol car . I am. Ive had it for 20 years next january. Touch wood, its going great. Answer me this question. There are a lot of ca rs this question. There are a lot of cars in transport and laurie on the roads, are you going to plug all these automobiles and lorries into roadside because now, you go to supermarkets and people have to plug in. You go to the garage and people to plug in. All this traffic, where is it going to plug in . People to plug in. All this traffic, where is it going to plugin . Thats an important point because if you make a lot of electric cars, you need to deal with congestion problems. There are particulate emissions. Emissions causing death in this country. We need to cut demand use of cars but that means putting on new bus routes, options for people to take transport, new train lines around the country, a major upgrade for our whole transport infrastructure but in terms of capacity for those people who have electric vehicles, the whole electricity grid does need a massive upgrade. We need to put that investment in now. Would you make flying crippling the expensive . No, we wouldnt. Want to introduce frequent flier levy. That wouldnt impact the first flight but the more flights you take, the levy would increase. In replacing Airport Passenger duty. It would kick in after one return flight . The second flight, after one return flight . The second flight, the third after one return flight . The second flight, the third flight, after one return flight . The second flight, the third flight, yes. How much . Would have to consult and look at how we address the demand. The key demographic we are trying to get is the 17 of lights taken by 15 of the people. There is this massive binge flying by number of people. What would the levy be . You look at what would impact demand. What would it be . You would have to consult and pilot the scheme. You dont know. We dont know until you try it out and see what the demand letter lives. Response and reaction . Lam all for changing i am all for changing to electric car. | i am all for changing to electric car. I want you to respond to frequent flyer levy. Yes, but it depends on how much it is. Frequent flyer levy. Yes, but it depends on how much it ism frequent flyer levy. Yes, but it depends on how much it is. It would kick on one of return flood. Flying is expensive and not expensive enough given the amount of environmental damage. enough given the amount of environmental damage. I want to talk about the role of big banks. environmental damage. I want to talk about the role of big banks. I am going to keep on flying for now. have lived in this country almost 50 years, the first couple of years either my parents flew over from america or we flew over there. They have gone and now i have not flown to the state for four years and i am not intending to fly. These are my sisters, cousins, nephews and. You are not flying because you care about the climate . Because i care about the climate . Because i care about the climate . Because i care about the climate. Applause. Are you going to ban privatejets . That is not in our manifesto. . Are you going to ban privatejets . That is not in our manifesto. If you are rich, you can carry on flying in your private jets and afford the frequent flyer levy, is there not a possibility of creating a two tier system . Possibility of creating a two tier system . That is an interesting idea. Our manifesto needs to change and adjust. Sounds like you are acknowledging that could be a two tier system. There might be a place for curbing private jets tier system. There might be a place for curbing privatejets but there is an issue over Aviation Fuel as well. One of the subsidies we give is terrible. We need to look at the true cost to our environment. Who would be hit by the carbon tax . People here . We hope it would be shouldered by big business, to make the transition. Anything to do with fossil fuel. The transition. Anything to do with fossil fuel. £76 billion the transition. Anything to do with fossilfuel. £76 billion from the transition. Anything to do with fossil fuel. £76 billion from the tax from big business . From the tax and we want that tax to be borne by big business. That is a guarantee that no one here will pay the carbon tax . Big business will need to decide whether they take that from their profit or pass it on. Were trying to make that easy but also we are implementing universal basic income which will help supplement any price increases so people have the choice of where they spend that money, additional power to make those choices and made to secure into the transition. Quite refreshing, nobody has mentioned brexit yet but i know there are people that want to mention it. Your version of democracy seems to be vote, vote and vote again until the answer you get. I look people in the eye when i campaigned for that referendum and i look people in the eye and said we will respect that vote. Why do you want to rerun of that . The second Biggest Issue for me is brexit right now. People in my family voted to leave. It ripped apart myself and my friends. Many people have experienced that. The last three years have been held. The debate has been toxic and we have to look at how were going to unite and together this country to find a way forward. Another referendum . Let me finish. I think this is so important. I think we were lied to and deceived on both sides. I think the referendum was shocking, scare tactic on both sides. We need to learn how to disagree well and move forward. A people s vote is our best shot to do that. We were not given up respect this at the time the flash prospective. Given up respect this at the time the flash prospective. When are you going to stop . We have had the vote, stick to it and get on with it. Democracy needs to be meaningful. We need to have a good. We were shut out of this process for the last three years. Why would the next government be any better than the last one . Scotland, will they carry on having referendums every two years . will they carry on having referendums every two years . I have learnt a lot more over the past two yea rs. Leave areas learnt a lot more over the past two years. Leave areas reaching out and talking out. We have been having constructive debates and the conversation has got better. They had their views. People in my family voted leave. I would never, ever, call them stupid. Second vote you would put remain on the ballot. If remain one and leavers wanted a third referendum, would you agree to that . We would have to see why they would want it. Because they do not like the result. It is not a simple case of not the result. I have explained it is about finding a way forward , explained it is about finding a way forward, to unite the country and get out of this mess and not having a government that has the population for three years. No engagement or consultation about the brexit deal. They said, delivered to us and they messed it up. Just to be clear, if people wanted a third referendum, what would you say . I would want to listen to the arguments, here the clearly. Listen to the arguments, here the clearly. How many would they be . When would it stop . It is not a question of having referendum after referendum but having a meaningful process to go forward in a sensible, commonsense way. We could surely draw a line under it now. You have talked about how your family has been split. With the greatest respect, the referendum result had 17. 5 Million People who voted for it and actually David Cameron said to all of us, we give you the power, the only thing that happened was, the only thing that happened was, the result was not what he wanted or by the political establishment wanted and, ever since then, the house of commons has tried everything in its power because three quarters of the politicians are remainers, including the speaker. Ok. That has stopped democracy working and the people i angry because they voted with Good Intention in the heart and now they find that you have a second or third one and it will never. Ok, let him respond. I understand why you feel it would never end and i think we need a process that carries the confidence as much as possible of the country. My question back to you is, do you feel this referendum process , is, do you feel this referendum process, to now, has carried the confidence of the country . Is it going to be something that is going to unite and take us Forward Together or do we need a more meaningful conversation, a more respectful conversation . At the end of the day, we were given that choice and cannot keep changing it all the time. That choice has to be upheld for the sake of democracy and for the sake of trust the politicians and institutions we have otherwise there will be a lot of angry people out there. You are weighing up the greens and the conservatives . By taking brexit to a people s vote youre delaying action on Climate Change and you could be focusing more on brexit. Lets get brexit sorted and focus on Climate Change. You were arrested as a member of extinction rebellion, wont you . I presume you are going to vote green . I have not decided yet. Why is it not a no brainer . To vote green . I have not decided yet. Why is it not a nobrainer . My vote will be used to ensure the conservatives do not stay in power and to me that is the most important thing. I would love to be able to vote green and to have a green mp in my constituency but that is unlikely. That does not mean i will not vote green but i havent decided. A big black sheep policy is a universal income for every adult, whether they need it or not. Yes. You would give it to multimillionaires like Raheem Sterling . It would have to be seen. Sterling . It would have to be seen. I have answered your question already. Yes. Is that not wasting taxpayers money . You claw it back and we are putting forward a proposalfor it back and we are putting forward a proposal for taking the wealth of the ridge and putting it in the hands of the poor. Applause. You want a simple and transparent system to manage that. It is hard to avoid that kind of taxation on the proposals we are making. We can go with this mistaken idea that arising tied will float all boats. It is destroying our country creating rampant inequality. People are drowning and we need a wait support those who needed and getting wealth of the rich and putting it back in the hands of those that needed. History tells us you are to win a majority in the elections and discussions about partying up with parties. Would you not be more effective than spending as a party and forming green wings within parties where you might have more influence is opposed to a protest vote . There are green people within parties. But when there is a massive green vote, like in the european elections, where we doubled the number of meps, and the number of counsellors in other elections. That is how you get the electoral change and that is why voting for the green party is the most important thing to do. That is it for this evening, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much to jonathan ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much toJonathan Bartley ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much to Jonathan Bartley and ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much toJonathan Bartley and to the audience. From all of us here, good night.
