Its not only professional interviewers who ask tough questions. Heres an audience member on last fridays question time leaders special putting Boris Johnson on the spot. How important is it for someone in your position of power to always tell the truth . Laughter. Applause. I think its absolutely vital and i think its absolutely vital. But when that excerpt was played on the following days news at 1, the audience laughter following the question was cut out, eliciting these responses. Unfortunately, when the bbc changes or edits some footage, all it does is undermine its objectivity and independence. Bbc news, on that lunch time bulletin, did Boris Johnson a huge, huge favour. The excuse given that they needed to shorten the clip did not make sense at all, as it was only a couple of seconds. But cutting it out completely changed the context. It is actually quite startling watching question time. Watching the audience feel comfortable laughing at a Prime Minister discussing the importance of truth. I think its really important this is investigated, because it undermines our confidence in bbcs impartiality and how much we can trust them. Well, as mentioned there, the bbc did point to reasons of timing in their explanation of what happened. Its statement said disputes over facts and figures are part of any election campaign, but this time around the arguments seem more numerous and acrimonious than ever, hence the need for neutral verification of the claims made. By organisations such as the charity full fact, channel 4 newss fact check, and reality check on the bbc. The latter is usually fronted by chris morris and recently, hes been very busy man. Here he is on wednesday scrutinising labours claims that the nhs was at risk under a post brexit trade deal with the us. Of course theres going to be pressure. Thats what trade talks are all about. There will also be trade offs. If the uk turns down some of these american requests, then we can expect the americans to keep british demands for access then we can expect the americans to reject some british demands for access to their market. But none of this is really proof the nhs is somehow for sale, even if the us would like it to be on the table. But producing a definitive verdict on what the politicians are saying is not a straightforward affair. Chris morris criticisms have themselves faced judgement with journalists from the daily mail and the Daily Telegraph over the past fortnight criticising his findings. And, of course, the whole business of Fact Checking has come under the spotlight since the conservative party entered this area for last weeks Leaders Debate on itv, asjessica parker reported. Looking online, what to take at face value . Last night, a brief reprint of a conservative Party Twitter last night, a brief rebrand of a conservative Party Twitter account to fact check uk. The conservatives say it was still clear who is running the account, but one senior labour figure says twitter should have taken it down. Well, undeterred by self styled entrances into the Fact Checking market, chris morris from bbc reality check is with me now. Thank you for making the time. Hi, some error. Hi, samira. Has this election already been particularly angry and more contentious, when it comes to doing reality check . Yeah, probably. Elections are always times when theres a lot of attention on exactly what politicians say a lot of numbers come out and manifestos. This election is seen as one of the most important for decades. So theres been an awful lot to check, and what we try basically is if we see things received politicians have either misspoken or said something incorrect or misleading, we will write about it. Do we spot all of them . No, because a lot of them are about as on many so many hours of the day. Do we get it right all the time . Possibly not, no one is infallible. The point is we are trying to hold them to account for what they say. And if somebody says something and they keep repeating it, then we will try and go back and say it again we still think this is wrong. We said it last week, and we say it again now. A lot of claims have been thrown around, so how do you choose which ones to investigate . The things that do get repeated. Politicians have their stump speeches, whether its borisjohnson orjeremy corbyn. If theres numbers in there that dont stand up to scrutiny. 50 Something Like nurses, or something . Numbers of nurses or police, statistics can stand up and you can say we are putting another 20,000 police on the streets, but may not mention the fact that the last nine years 20,000, the Police Numbers have gone down by about 21,000. Numbers need to be put into context, because they dont always tell the whole story. Are you reticent to call something a lie, or to call someone a liar . A lot of people get upset about this on social media, and i think it does not help that much to call people liars. I think what we should do is say, this is what somebody said, here is what we believe the fact of the situation. I think the audience is smart enough to decide whether somebody is lying or not. I think me going on into a studio like this and pointing at a politician and saying, liar, liar, pants on fire thats more reality tv than reality check. It is interesting. The editorial policy director has said exactly that. Its not the bbcsjob to be calling out a liar. I dont think it is. Thats part of what we are dealing with at the moment. Other people disagree the head of channel 4 has said that we should be calling people liars. My point is a lot of what we are dealing with at the moment is not necessarily so much lying its bluster, its smoke screen, its id probably scant to the full work on a family show, but its bs. And its not trying to conceal the truth, its not quite caring with the details of the truth are. If you start throwing around labels like liar, it gets in the way of saying its really difficult sometimes to pin people down on these things. That raises a whole other question of is there any point in Fact Checking if they will keep saying things . I think theres a debate to be held about how useful it is, but our primary purpose has to be to focus on the facts as we see them. You will know the fact checks themselves have been disputed by some newspaper commentators. Is it also the reality that some fact checks are disputable, and not just black and white . They can be. Theres always been political spin and so there should be vibrant democracy, there will always be people trying to persuade their part of the electorate as you look at the numbers and you lean this way, and look at the numbers and lean that way. So spin is part of the process. I do think its increased in recent years thats probably because social media amplifies everything. Probably because also, social media means parties can very easily put out little bits of video or audio, little bits of things that are almost unfiltered. Now they might say thats good that will get past the bias of the media. We will say its bad because you can spin it too much without being able to say, its ourjob to say we think youve gone too far on this one. A lot of concerns that reality check marks a failure in the first place by bbc news journalists to adequately analyse before reporting politicians promises and by the time reality check gets to dealing with them, the claims have been out there for several hours. This leader has promised this, and that has not been challenged until you get around to it. I dont think any presenter can be expected to be an expert and absolutely everything. One of the roles i have is to come after after weve heard all of it. Those numbers we did not think they were right. Whether it be a labour claim of spending £500 million extra week on nhs medicine after a trade deal with united states, or the tories saying labours spending plan adds up to £i. 2 trillion. There are numbers you can dispute. I think its very difficult for a presenter to interrupt every time someone gets a number out, or your interview would never get anywhere. Because you want to hear opinions as well as numbers. Chris morris, thank you. Thank you for all your comments. 0n next weeks programme the last before the general election well be speaking to a senior bbc executive about the corporations coverage of the campaign. Please do send us your comments and questions to put to them by e mail or on twitter. And do have a look at our website. Thats all from us. We will be back to hear your thoughts about bbc News Coverage again next week. Goodbye. Hello again. Many of us saw that sunny but Colder Weather work its way in yesterday. Skies like these were pretty commonplace, not a great deal of cloud around and it wasnt too windy either. Youve really got more of the same to come as we look forward to the weekend by the prospects as well. Yes, its going to be sunny, but its also going to be cold. We have some sharp frost to come, and some fog patches around as well, but at least it will be dry for quite a few of us. Now, if youre heading outside over the next few hours, we do have clear skies for many areas, although a few showers coming and going across northern scotland and cloud keeping the frost at bay as well across the south west of england. Otherwise, its a cold night, it could be the coldest of the autumn, actually. Temperatures may well get down to 10 degrees celsius as we look at the very first part of saturday morning. Lowest temperatures probably around six or seven in the morning. Travel, that could well be affected by fog patches around. If there are a couple of things fog hates, its low cloud and strengthening winds, and thats what well have moving into the south west early on saturday morning. That means the zone most at risk of seeing fog patches really stretches across the midlands into wales. Here, there could be poor visibility, perhaps down to 100m or so in places. So some tricky travelling conditions to be expected first thing. And some of those fog patches may well linger even into the early afternoon. You can see the extent of the sunshine for most of us, a few showers coming and going across northern scotland and through the afternoon we will see a weather front the far south west, bringing out acts of rain, and strengthening winds which will make it cold here. A cold day for all of us, really, with temperatures for most around 2 8. Through saturday evening, it looks like we will continue to see a bit of rain just skirting into the far south west of england, the Channel Islands for a time. Thats all associated with this area of low pressure that moves out of the way for sunday and then its back to the high pressure. There is a subtle change in the wind direction on sunday, so after a cold and frosty start again, with plenty of sunshine for most of us, we will see showers moving around the north sea and getting blown into the thames estuary, so we will see some of them coming into the north of kent. Across northern scotland, if anything, the showers could well come together later on in the day to give some wetter weather right towards the end of the afternoon. 0n into monday, a bit more in the way of cloud across Northern Areas with some rain skirting across the far north of scotland. Otherwise a dry, cold, frosty start to the day, a few fog patches around but plenty of sunshine for most of us. Those temperatures still struggling for many although notice it is turning milder across the far north west of scotland. And that really is a trend we see later on in the week. It does turn a little bit milder from the north and west as the week goes on. This is bbc news welcome if youre watching here in the uk, on pbs in america or around the globe. Im james reynolds.
