Protesters against italys far right party, the league, gather in rome for whats expected to be the biggest demonstration yet by grassroots activists that call themselves the sardines. Good evening, and welcome to bbc news. The Prime Minister has visited the north east of england to thank voters in traditional labour heartlands for backing his party. Borisjohnson met with supporters in newly conservative sedgefield, tony blairs former constituency. The labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn is coming under increasing pressure to resign with immediate effect after his party suffered its worst Election Results since the 1930s. Our political correspondent, iain watson, reports. A Prime Minister is a familiar sight in these parts, though its usually been a labour and not a conservative one. So where better for borisjohnson to rub his opponents nose in the election result than in tony blairs old Stomping Ground of sedgefield. I know that people may have been breaking the voting habits of generations to vote for us. And i want the people of the north east to know that we in the conservative party, and i, will repay your trust. So what issues will he have to focus on if he is to retain the trust of new supporters . I hope he does a good job, he will get brexit done and i hope he gets the nhs done. Education and Everything Else he has promised. Mad hatter, really i hope he does a good job, he will get brexit done and i thats how he comes across. But who knows, he might sort it out. Jeremy corbyn was re elected in islington but his partys so called red wall was damaged or demolished in parts of the midlands and the north of england. He says he will stay on until his successor is elected but his long standing critics just want him to go. I dont think you can have the proper, deep reflection that we need to have under the leadership of a person who thinks that the programme is all right and he worked really hard on the only thing that was wrong was that the media did not like him and that the brexit message was wrong. When labour mps return to westminster next week they will be a much diminished group nearly 60 fewer of them than after the 2017 general election. The party is now looking for a new leader and a new deputy leader, and whileJeremy Corbyn has called for a period of reflection, in truth, battles are likely to rage over the reasons for labours defeat. And today, one of the leading figures in the leadership has announced that he is withdrawing from the front line. The new leader will come in place, appoint the shadow cabinet, i wont be part of the shadow cabinet, ive done my bit. We need to move on at that stage with the new leader, and i think we will be in a position where we are learning lessons and listening to people. What was it . It was notjust brexit, i think there was a long history of maybe a0 years of neglect. Next week, he will bring his brexit bill back to parliament, but for now, Boris Johnson is familiarising himself with territory that many thought would never go tory. Iain watson, bbc news. And, iain is with me now. I have just printed i havejust printed out i have just printed out the list of mps who lost their seats, it fills nearly two pages, most of them are either labour mps are former labour mps who stayed in that constituencies again as independence. Is it hard to overestimate what a disaster this is for labour . That is right. Some people are saying thatJeremy Corbyn did better than in 1983, the lowest since 1935, since the prewar era. There was a higher number of losses than anticipated. In some regions, they could see the writing on the wall, i was in middlesbrough, activists and officials that they we re activists and officials that they were saying that it would be much worse than anticipated. It turns out today, Boris Johnson worse than anticipated. It turns out today, borisjohnson off worse than anticipated. It turns out today, Boris Johnson off to worse than anticipated. It turns out today, borisjohnson off to victor the spoils. Certainly, the scale has shocked people, what has shocked some labour mps as well, because of that scale, whyJeremy Corbyn is the leader of the labour party. That scale, whyJeremy Corbyn is the leader of the labour partylj that scale, whyJeremy Corbyn is the leader of the labour party. I was in whitefield on thursday night, which counted wakefield, pontefract. Yvette cooper, was saying that she felt there was a growing gap for lay by between the cities, but it still seems to be racking up big bouts, in west london, plenty of mps returning with increased majorities. But in the towns, labour . Grapes seem to have really slipped, places like bolton, peters buddha, bishop auckland, places where he would have thought labour would have a strong showing yet was kind of liked out on thursday. Some of these places are astonishing because there are so called traditional labour, not all, but most are traditional labour treasuries. Some of them mining villages. Perhaps industry has not come back. Speaking to some people involved in the labour party, they felt they were suffering for incumbency, rather than the government getting the blame, people said that they were the establishment. Picked it up a little bit ina establishment. Picked it up a little bit in a John Mcdonnells statements as well, saying that there was a0 yea rs of as well, saying that there was a0 years of neglect. The other thing about this town, city split, one of the potential candidates putting herself around is. I think she will be able to say, i can grow up list and try to figure out why that is at this big difference. You see lots of towns under the last Labour Government regenerated in a city centres, surrounding satellite towns feeling left out. I think it is multifaceted, not simply about brexit, although that might be the trigger that convince people to change their loyalties to stop i was struck by one labour councillors into me on thursday. He said, we we re into me on thursday. He said, we were telling them you couldnt have this confused message on brexit on the doorsteps, you have to accept that voters voted for brexit and washing out, and they felt you were trying to scupper brexit which made it even harderfor them trying to scupper brexit which made it even harder for them to listen to us it even harder for them to listen to us and all the things promised. As far as it labour voters were concerned, they had backed brexit and perceive that their party as being an obstacle to that. That is right. We have been talking about it over the past 2a hours. The short version is that this battle of the narratives, the shadow boxing has begun quite frankly, it shows that there are those who control the pass command to the future. If they can get a narrative of what went wrong right, then they become the right candidate to deliver on that. John trickett would say that lad be a party should have respected leave. Actually, believes that a lot of people in remain area ignored people who voted to leave. The other narrative is, quite simply, there is no problem with blocks chocolate brexit on the third step, but the presentation of it, the delight of not taking one side or the other. However radicalJeremy Corbyns programme was, if they can pin the blame to him and moving the party to the left, that perhaps clears the ground for those who move away from the corporate agenda. You talk about the corporate agenda. You talk about the agenda, some media critics say labour was too left too radical s, out of step with the public is. It is not just out of step with the public is. It is notjustjeremy card button those who argued that mackJeremy Corbyn who argued that mackJeremy Corbyn who are good batch. Many mps are of that perspective. We now the activist base is much to the left of it was five or six years ago. They we re it was five or six years ago. They were arguing that he would never get chance to be leader, never mind change the direction of the party. Chance to be leader, never mind change the direction of the partylj think that is right, but it depends how they argue it. To some extent, you could argue that people have lost touch with traditional communities, their list of priorities might be somewhat different tojeremy priorities might be somewhat different to Jeremy Corbyns in islington, for example. There is the question of how many will be fibbing interchange leader, is what some of the noncorporate encounter talking about. Party rules are changed in 2015, you can pay a bit of money, ta ke 2015, you can pay a bit of money, take part in the leadership contest. If you have somebody who looks very different from Jeremy Corbyn and from borisjohnson, different from Jeremy Corbyn and from Boris Johnson, then different from Jeremy Corbyn and from borisjohnson, then they can perhaps get people into the party to dilate the left wing membership. So do what they left it exactly to them. Whether they can be successful, who knows . It is perhaps less exciting for the saudis to bring it back to the centre. The other point is in terms of the message itself, how they calibrated, i feel assault on message itself, how they calibrated, ifeel assault onjeremy message itself, how they calibrated, i feel assault onJeremy Corbyns policies, perhaps having too many policies, perhaps having too many policies all at once, sounding like the Conveyor Belt of the generation game, so the Conveyor Belt of the generation game, so many the Conveyor Belt of the generation game, so many gifts at once the can even remember them. Passengers are being advised to check train times before travelling from tomorrow, as major timetable changes are introduced. Rail Companies Say journey times will be cut, Services Made more frequent, and new routes added following investment in infrastructure and carriages. But concerns remain over whether there may be disruption during the transition period as our business correspondent, katie prescott, explains. This is the nightmare scenario. When train timetables were changed in may last year chaos ensued. Standing room only as passengers faced cancellations, delays and overcrowding. But the organisation representing the train Companies Says this time things will be different. What were doing now is were looking at each other in the eye, whether it be train operators or infrastructure managers, and saying, are you really ready to put these new services on . And if they look as if they would impact either punctuality or reliability, they are pulled from being an additional service. We dont want to go through what happened last year. If the new timetable is a success, passengers like these could benefit from faster and more frequent services, with more trains and more carriages, meaning 1000 extra services a week, and some quite significant changes in some parts of the uk. Tomorrow will see the biggest timetable change on the Great Western Railway Network since the 1970s. The electrification of the line between london and bristol will shave 12 minutes off the quickest trains. The maesteg and conwy lines in wales will get sunday services for the first time. And there will be major improvements on the scotrail network, with Additional Trains in north east scotland, as well as extra seats between edinburgh and glasgow. Passengers are advised to check before they travel, as many train times are changing from tomorrow. Katie prescott, bbc news. One woman has been seriously injured and another has suffered minor injuries after a stabbing incident in the hindley area of wigan. Greater Manchester Police responded to reports of a double stabbing at around 10. 30 this morning. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Tens of thousands of people have gathered in rome for what the organisers hope will be the biggest street protest against italys far right party, league led by the former deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini. The movement, called the sardines, started last month and has grown rapidly. 0ur rome correspondent, make lowen, is at the protests in the italian capital. Theyve just broken out into their anthem of the sardine movement, the antifascist partisan song, bella ciao. Crowd sings bella ciao, ciao, ciao. And this is what this movement represents. It is fighting against the values of fascism that they believe are espoused now by italys far right here. Matteo salvini, the former deputy Prime Minister who is now in opposition, he leads the league party, and this movement has sprung up as a spontaneous protest against him. It started just a month ago as a flash mob in the northern italian city of bologna, the idea of four friends to gather 6000 people in the square there as Matteo Salvini was due to launch a campaign for a regional election. Double the number of people came and so sparked this street movement. They call themselves the sardines because theyre so tightly packed into squares, and in the last month, they have gathered in the length and breadth of italy. And they have really stunned italy by the speed with which they have grown, by the numbers turning out, and they have really caught Matteo Salvini by surprise. A little earlier, i spoke to analissa piras an italian film maker and political observer about the rapid rise of the so called sardines movement. It is fascinating because it is so young, just one month, it has managed to mobilise so many people are everywhere in italy. The fact that in only one month it has managed to get to room, this Historic Place about big protest gather, is quite extraordinary. Rome. What is also lovely is the jolly nice and creativity of it, people are building their own sardines, it is a very creative and festive. It is completely apolitical, but it is sending a very strong and serious message, i believe. There is a sense that the left and centre of italian politics has really been on the defensive for quite a long time now. Matteo salvini and the league have taken the initiative had appeared to have a lot of momentum in winning election victories in unexpected places, is that what is behind that is where i kind of reaction to that, i silently speaking up, perhaps not represented by the politicians well . It is exactly this. It is a response to the recount of triumph in a social media and the new technology that the new popular it is, the fascist force represented by Matteo Salvini, has managed to do. This is the entire Italian Society saying no to those kind of an thai immigration, racist, extremist views of Matteo Salvini. It is saying it ina very of Matteo Salvini. It is saying it in a very powerful way, it is very young, spontaneously founded by young, spontaneously founded by young people. The founders are four friends who dont really belong to politics. They only put up their Facebook Page promoting on the sardines 15 days ago, it is extraordinary. Things can grow quickly and dissipate quickly, the challenge is to sustain. It is a challenge. Italy has a long history of this kind of creative, powerful flash movement which happens and then disappears. In listening to, there was a famous one which was led somehow by a film maker. There have been other powerful movements about womens equality. They tend to disappeared but they do play a very Important Role in the sense the kind of wake up Important Role in the sense the kind of wa ke up political Important Role in the sense the kind of wake up Political Parties to Pay Attention to what people are saying. I wonder whether the interest in this might go . There was another movement launched by a comedian, very much a grassroots movement, he has ended up in government, quite beyond peoples expectation. When you get to that stage, it becomes a different sort of thing, i guess. How do they keep this going, there are important elections coming up in the next one. This movement is unusual because it is specifically targeted at keeping Matteo Salvini out of the traditional left wing region. His movement is growing very strong because he is capitalising on a racist on anti immigration movements. This movement is pushing for stopping line get to get to this region. We do not know where it will go. In my mind, it is important it is happening because it is sending a very clear message to the parties in government that that is a strong support for them to take a stronger sta nce support for them to take a stronger stance against this sort of fascist tendencies. Just briefly, why sardines . Sardines is a very funny, because they wanted to be as packed as possible in the square next to where Matteo Salvini was going to be. They saw Matteo Salvini was going to have 5000 people, they said, we are going to be 6000, lets pack ourselves like sardines. But then, it became a very powerful image for what people can do when you get many, many people together. They want to be silent, as well, they dont want to be screaming like Matteo Salvini. The headlines on bbc news the Prime Minister tells supporters in tony blairs old constituency in north east england that they have changed the Political Landscape and the country. Faster journies, news routes and more trains its all change on the railways from tomorrow. Protesters against italys far right party, the league, gather in rome for whats expected to be the biggest demonstration yet by grassroots activists that call themselves the sardines. Ideal negotiations at the United Nations Climate Summit in madrid continue this weekend without an agreement in sight. Known as cop25, the summit was meant to decide on rules for the implementation of the 2015 paris climate agreement. Many key issues were left open after last years summit in poland, and remain unresolved. 0ur environment correspondent, matt mcgrath, has the latest developments. Almost every country in at the world signed the paris climate agreement about four years ago. One of the terms of that particular pact was that every country should update their National Plans on cutting carbon by the end of 2020, next year. All those countries have come to this particular conference here in madrid to actually work out the wrinkles in that plan, the timetable when they are going to submit their plans, and to whom. They have run into major difficulties here, because a lot of the countries in the eu do a small island states and many others feel that what is on the table is not ambitious enough. They feel the science is very clear, the message on the streets is very clea r message on the streets is very clear countries need to be doing more. What they have seen it written down on ataxia, they are not very happy about other countries like the us, australia, japan, india, and others, i feel there is us, australia, japan, india, and others, ifeel there is too much pressure in the plans at the moment and are objecting to those we stop so and are objecting to those we stop so there is a kind of stalemate here. There is also a big question mark over carbon markers, lots of countries, including brazil, want to bring forward carbon credits from the past and use it in the future. A lot of people object to that, feeling it would devalue at the home market. There is also the issue of loss and damage, this idea of compensating small island states for the damages enjoyed by climate change, which they can link to climate change, actually looking for composition to that. Theyre trying to agree some sort of comparable atomic composition or that there feel there are very far apart on a range of issues, many of them claim the chilean presidency. Chile is the country tasked with bringing everybody together, the meeting is not being held in chile, it has been held in madrid because of civil u nrest held in madrid because of civil unrest civil unrest in that country to stop many feel that chile has done a fantasticjob. They still hope that they can come together and work on a compromise, but they worry is that they dont, these sconces will end in failure, the conference will end in failure, the conference will have to be suspended and resumed at some point in the new year. Police have officially named the first victim of the white island volcano eruption in new zealand, as Recovery Efforts continue. Krystal eve browitt was a 21 year old australian who was visiting the island with her family. Her father and sister are both in hospital with serious injuries. 15 deaths have been now been confirmed from mondays eruption, while about 20 people are in intensive care with severe burns. Phil mercer has more. Police divers and their colleagues from the navy have been in the contaminated waters off white island and those seas have been contaminated by that volcanic eruption on monday. So, ash, chemicals in the water and when the divers have to come out of the water, they must be decontaminated. Visibility is not good in the water. What theyre looking for is a body. A body was seen in the sea 2a hours after the eruption. So, the authorities believe that there are two more victims that they need to retrieve. One of them is believed to be in the water. The other is still thought to be on the island. There will be no attempt to go back in to land on the island today, so the authorities are concentrating their efforts on the seas, looking for one of those last known victims. Weather forecasters are warning australia could experience its hottest day on record next week. Temperatures are expected to peak in many areas from wednesday the Current Record ofjust over 50 degrees celsius was set in 1960. New fire warnings have been issued for western parts of the country, as well as queensland. At this time of year, many of us think about the plight of Homeless People sleeping rough on the street, but the dogs trust says a Record Number of animals will be receiving their hampers this year to help them through the cold winter months. The trust also wants more hostels and landlords to accept Homeless People and their dogs. 0ur reporter, john maguire, has more. She may look every inch the princess, but this time last year, layla the chihuahua didnt even have a roof over her head. She walks, shejust following me, following me. Wherever i go, she is coming. Her owner, mustafa, was homeless. After 27 years living in the uk, including running his own business, he found himself living and sleeping on the streets of north london. To be honest, i dont wish no one to live on the street, especially in the cold weather like december, january, you know . I found myself outside the church in leytonstone, in the cemetery, you know, with the dead people. Me and layla, you know, just sleeping there, rough. Its very tough. I never, ever imagined one day this is going to be happening to me. Throughout his four months sleeping rough, mustafa and layla were inseparable. When im next to her, theres no problem. Wherever, if i take her to sleep in the street, if i take her in different houses, im with her, shes fine. But now, they do have a roof, they have a bedsit flat, warm, dry and safe. Mustafas staying in ymca accommodation, while waiting for a permanent home. Theyre lucky, as only 10 of shelters or accommodation for Homeless People allow pets. Its ok that we accept the dog, but when were then trying to move people on a lot of the accommodation theyre moving to is private rented sector. Landlords dont want to accept dogs, so theres another barrier at that end. So, any work we can do with the dogs trust to try and break down some of those barriers would be good as well. Christmas has come early for layla, as today, the charity dogs trust is giving mustafa a hamper one of the 1,750 theyll hand out this year, almost 300 more than last christmas, which, for many, can be a difficult time. Sometimes, if you do have people that might have been rough sleeping, if they havent had much contact with friends or family, their dog can quite often always have been there for them and been their friend and their support. Dogs can also be beneficial to Mental Health and can provide a point of contact for people who are often isolated from support services and are difficult to reach. This is all part of the trusts hope project, which also offers Veterinary Care all year round, a reminder then of the charitys seasonal message that a dog is for life and not just for christmas. John maguire, bbc news, london. Now its time for a look at the weather with sarah keith lucas. Saturday has brought has a blustery day with wintry showers around. That has been sleet and snow over the higher ground, this picture is from cou nty higher ground, this picture is from county durham, a dusting of snow there. We could see more sleet and snow in the high ground over the north through this evening and night. Freely we can, a study of some sunshine but plenty of blustery showers is the risk of some snow over the higher ground. Winds are still gusty for the rest of the afternoon out this evening, gusting around a0 to 50 mph, strong winds through the english channel. We will see further sleet and snow over the high ground of scotland, particularly in the west, through the course of this evening, further showers working in too much of england and wales also. Through the night, that is the risk of some icy stretches forming, more sleet and snow to come over the high ground, especially in a no no. Rain showers down at lower levels tonight, some snow showers for much of wellness. Through the pennines, southern uplands, mourne mountains, seeing that snowfall. Many parts of northern ireland, scotland, Northern England and wales in particular could well see an ic stuck to the sunday morning. A breeze is keeping things mostly frost free, temperatures hovering around a or 5 degrees only for herself. Further off getting just below freezing, a cold start to the day for scotland and northern ireland, watch out for some icy stretches. Low pressure sits to the north of the uk on sunday, showers rotate around the flat, so another day of some sunshine but also a scattering of some showers. Quite a lot of dry weather through sunday, probably more than today, more showers working in from the west later in the afternoon, we will continue to see clouds over western parts of scotland. Those customers of wind are still likely to reach a0 to 50 mph, but not quite as lively windy as today. Temperatures about 3 to 9 degrees on sunday. Taking a quick look at the week ahead, things are going to be turning gradually a little bit milder, but staying on settle with other showers at times. Not quite as windy as it has been through the weekend. Hello this is bbc news. The headlines. The Prime Minister visits voters in tony blairs old constituency in north east england promising to repay the trust of those whod broken the voting habits of generations. Our country has now embarked on a wonderful adventure. Were going to recover our National Self confidence, our mojo, our self belief
