The hollywood Actor Johnny Depp has denied he has an anger problem, at the start of the libel action hes bringing against the sun. Hes suing newspapers Publisher News group over an article that called him a wife beater, allegations that he strenuously denies. From the high court, David Sillito reports. Johnny depp arriving in court this morning. He has brought this case to clear his name of an allegation that he is a wife beater. It was those words that were in a headline in an article in the sun when the journalist dan wootton questioned jk rowling supporting the casting ofjohnny depp in an adaptation of her fantastic beasts book. The allegations of physical abuse were made byjohnny depps former wife, the actor amber heard, who also arrived at court this morning to watch proceedings. At the heart of this are amber heards claim that she endured 1a separate assaults, that she had suffered serious injury and had at times been in fear of her life. The sun said there was overwhelming evidence supporting her claims. All of this, johnny depp strongly denies. You came because you crave something new. Something different. The trigger for the article had been the announcement thatjohnny depp would be appearing in the second fantastic beasts film. Depp was questioned in court about his relationship and one particular meeting with amber heard, in which it was said, things got physical. Johnny depp said. Johnny depp was then questioned about his drug use and friendship with the rock star Marilyn Manson. This isjust the beginning of a case that is due to last three weeks. Our correspondent sean dilley is at the royal courts ofjustice in central london. And some pretty dramatic stuff . Yes, essentially, the two site arguing about the same 1a incidents, they just have vastly different accounts as to what happened. It central to that for ajohnny as to what happened. It central to that for a johnny depp is his reputation. When he said in april 2018 that he was defamed by the Sun Newspaper and its executive editor, of course they take the countries you and they are relying very much on that evidence from amber heard. They take that contrary view. Take a lay person, it may seem rather peculiar scenes, they asked about his role models and celebrities, he admitted taking drugs at Marilyn Manson on two occasions, and in particular, because they are looking at these two versions of events, his barristers said to the court and the judge that plainly, one side is lying, eitherjohnny depp is guilty of what the Sun Newspaper said, or he is in some way, to paraphrase slightly, he is maligned and the other side have indeed defamed him. Its important we consider that level of harm, because he says there was a direct attack on him that caused him personal and professional humiliation, particularly by referencing that article, the victims of harvey weinstein, the film producer, which he says was a very topical matter at the time, in and around the metoo movement. Needless to say, his lawyers say this is not about money, its about vindication. The other side, the barristers and the legal team for the second back newspaper, of course, taking the contrary view, as you might imagine. The Sun Newspaper. We are going to hear more from johnny depp for the next day or two and then next week we should hear from two and then next week we should hearfrom amber two and then next week we should hear from amber heard amongst the other witnesses. Once again, that has thejudge has other witnesses. Once again, that has the judge has to take here, not being a jury has the judge has to take here, not being ajury in has the judge has to take here, not being a jury in this case, is, does he believejohnny being a jury in this case, is, does he believe johnny depps being a jury in this case, is, does he believejohnny depps version that he was not in fact a wife beater, or the sun that he was . They dont get much more a list than johnny depp. Whats the atmosphere like in court . The atmosphere, as i understand it, is electric to say the very least. Johnny depp is described as answering the questions respectfully, he is back and forth, very much, as you might expect of an entertainer, is the way one journalist described that to me, in particular, he was asked about an anger problem, they cited examples as far back as 1989 when he paid for damage for a hotel room. And he said, i dont have a loving problem, yes, i laughed. Thank you very much. Boris johnsons comment that too many care homes didnt really follow coronavirus protocols has been met with a fierce backlash from right across the care sector. His words have been variously described as clumsy, crass, cowardly, totally inappropriate, hugely insulting and a slap in the face for care workers. Labour have asked for an apology which downing street is declining to offer. However, number ten officials have been trying to stress that what the Prime Minister really meant is that at the outset nobody knew what the correct protocols were. The number of excess deaths recorded in care homes in england and wales in three months in the midst of the crisis was 30,000. Our Political Correspondent nick eardley reports. Care homes have been on the front line of the pandemic and felt the full force of coronavirus. In england and wales, the number of residents who have died during the outbreak is almost 30,000 more than in the same period last year. There are debates about why, whether mistakes were made. But the Prime Minister has angered many in the sector by saying this. We discovered too many care homes didnt really follow the procedures in the way they could have, but we are learning lessons the whole time. After that comment, downing street have been keen to distance borisjohnson from explicit criticism of care homes and the business secretary offered this interpretation. I think the point the Prime Minister was making was that nobody at the time knew what the correct procedures were, because we didnt know the extent of asymptomatic transmission that was taking place. No one is suggesting that care homes havent done a greatjob in difficult circumstances. But some say that is not enough. They think the government should take more responsibility and want an apology from the Prime Minister. For the government to be critical of the sector and infer that any of the losses and problems are as a result of social care, is a massive untruth and the fact is, it is a chronic failure of government leadership, where we have had a litany of mistakes since the beginning of the crisis. The care sector is still dealing with the impact of coronavirus and that is why some are so angry. There will be debate about the way the crisis was handled, notjust the support given by government, but the performance of individual providers too. Some fear however that the blame game has already started. Instead of blaming care homes, the government should learn lessons and urgently fix that crisis in social care and get a better system for the future. Reform of social can care has proved elusive for Prime Ministers, in recent years, such is the scale of task, but the current occupant of no 10 faces a short term job of repairing relations with those in the sector. We can speak to our Political Correspondent chris mason. I suppose at the heart of this is where borisjohnson was just careless, or couldnt care less. |j think that is the essence of it, and what we have had from downing street this lunchtime, the lobby briefing for westminster reporters, i was on that all, their emphasis is that people kind of got the wrong end of the stick from what borisjohnson said yesterday, and there was a kind of over interpretation of a single sentence. As you say, there is no doubt the depth of the anger from many people in the care sector at what Boris Johnson many people in the care sector at what borisjohnson said. From downing street today, point blank refusal to apologise, the official spokesman was offer that opportunity on several occasions and decline. Instead, they are saying, look, it can be acknowledged now that it wasnt known at the time the scale of asymptomatic transmission, and therefore whatever the guidance and a care home would have been following, they could have all found themselves or a many found themselves or a many found themselves in a situation where they we re themselves in a situation where they were behaving in a way that with hindsight was more dangerous than they interpreted at the time. But they interpreted at the time. But the row is not dying down, a Real Exchange in the commons this lunchtime between the Health Secretary matt hancock and his labour shadow. Can he understand why people are so insulted by the Prime Ministers remarks when he said too many care homes didnt really follow the procedures . Can he appreciate the hurt that has led to care home providers today, for example, describing the comments is clumsy and cowardly . And can he tell us, therefore, which care homes didnt follow procedures and what the procedures were that were not followed . Procedures were that were not followed . And procedures were that were not followed . And will procedures were that were not followed . And will he take this opportunity now to apologise for the Prime Ministers crass remarks . Throughout this crisis, care homes have done amazing work, and the Prime Minister was explaining that because asymptomatic transmission was not known about, the correct procedures were therefore not known, and we have been constantly learning about this virus from the start, and improving procedures all the way through. And i pay tribute to the ca re through. And i pay tribute to the care homes of this country, who have done so much to care for the most vulnerable throughout this crisis. I think whats interesting here, is firstly, a really obvious but important point, we are not yet, of course, at the stage where this is an opportunity to reflect on what happened during a pandemic because its behind us. It is still ongoing and for those in the care sector so angered at what the Prime Minister said yesterday, they are still dealing with the reality of either coronavirus cases or keeping coronavirus cases or keeping coronavirus out of their homes every single day. And i think the bigger point is how central the role of ca re point is how central the role of care homes in the pandemic is going to prove to be in the big discussion to prove to be in the big discussion to follow at some stage when there is some sort of enquiry in to what has happened. We know the government has happened. We know the government has committed and was committed before the pandemic to looking at the whole issue of social care in england, and thats a massive piece of work that plenty of governments have promised to do and frankly, none for the last couple of decades have managed to successfully pull off. But then also the specific of the role of care homes within the pandemic, and what might have been done differently hindsight, and crucially, what lessons can be learned where this to happen again. If youre looking at a review of the health care system, you need the ca re system on health care system, you need the care system on your site, dont you . You do. And thats remarks like this, whether inadvertent or clumsy or would have you apply to them, perception is reality, isnt it . If people are concluding in the care sector that they feel what the Prime Minister said was crass, and plenty have come to that conclusion, i guess whatever downing streets explanation is, then the relationship between that sector and the government is damaged, the government is not willing to apologise, we know that from the briefing this lunchtime which doesnt do anything to dampen down that anger. And as you say, the interaction between the government and the care sector in both learning the lessons of the virus but also the lessons of the virus but also the big changes that the government is promising over the coming years, theres got to be a dialogue, hasnt there . Theres got to be a respect between the two of them, and the remark yesterday certainly does not help build those bridges. Thank you very much. Just days after pubs in england were allowed to reopen, at least three have had to close again, after customers tested positive for coronavirus. The pubs in west yorkshire, hampshire and somerset were all alerted when customers found out they had the virus. The Health Secretary matt hancock praised their response in the commons this lunchtime. Our Health CorrespondentRichard Galpin reports. Last saturday and celebrations across england as pubs and much of the rest of the hospitality sector reopened after months of lockdown. But there were warnings it was risky, with thousands of people going out for drinks and social distancing not always followed. This pub in somerset, one of several now to have closed down again after a customer whod been there on saturday had called in to say hed since tested positive for coronavirus, causing dismay for the owners here. But they acted quickly, contacting everyone else whod been there to warn then. Obviously i spoke to my bosses first, and then we took it on ourselves to start the phoning of the customers, because obviously test and trace can do all that but we took it on ourselves to do it so that we knew that we had done it before it had got out there. Im sure it would have happened in pubs, but i didnt expect it to happen the first weekend. Doing their own tracing of customers quickly could be an example for others. With all the staff having tested negative now, they are hoping to open the doors again in a few days time. In the fox and hounds pub here in west yorkshire, they had the same problem. A customer phoning them to save theyd tested positive for the virus. For those whod been at the pub, it came as a shock. Like, we did know about it, didnt think it would come to us round here. Yes, it is a bit of a wake up call. We are all a bit scared to go out now. Official guidance for pubs on Contact Tracing says they only need to get details from one person in a group, who provides a name and phone number. Details must be kept for 21 days. Public Health England welcomes the more proactive response of the pubs which have now had to close down. Id like to reiterate the importance of the individual taking responsibility, as weve seen in this instance, the business taking responsibility and Public Health working together so we can all keep our communities safe. Cases of coronavirus in pubs emerging so soon after reopening are a big concern, but it seems they can be tackled quickly. Richard galpin, bbc news. The headlines on bbc news.
