Hello and welcome. We start in ukraine, where president Volodymyr Zelensky says a russian guided bomb has hit a Blood Transfusion Centre he says rescuers are at the scene in the town of kupiansk where there are quote dead and wounded. The reported strike came shortly after kyiv said missiles had hit a facility which manufactures engines for aircraft and helicopters in the country s west. In a tweet, president zelensky said this war crime alone says everything about russian aggression. Beasts that destroy everything that simply allows to live. Defeating terrorists is a matter of honour for everyone who values life. so far, theres been no comment from russia. Our ukraine correspondent, James Waterhouse is in kyiv if there is accuracy to president zelensky s claim, it appears once again a medical building has come in harms way. Weve seen it before with a Maternity Hospital in the besieged city of Mariupol Last year. Weve seen it in a Mental Health hospital in dnipro just a few months ago. This is a war that is synonymous with civilian areas, with cities being directly targeted. Now, in president zelensky s tweet, he says, this war crime alone says everything about russian aggression. He says defeating terrorists is a matter of honour for everyone who values life. Now, this is typical rhetoric you get from president zelensky as he tries to boost his countrys morale under this sustained kind of attack. Were told there are dead and wounded, but we dont know much outside of president zelensky s tweet. Separately, in the past hour, ukraines air force has said it was in action all night, destroying 30 out of a0 russian Cruise Missiles and all 27 drones. It also said russia had launched three Kinjal Hypersonic missiles, without disclosing any details. The latest developments in ukraine come as saudi arabia has been hosting talks, aimed at finding a solution to the war in ukraine. Senior officials from some a0 countries including the us, china and india have gathered there to try to find a peaceful settlement, though russia has not been invited to take part. Our middle east correspondent Sameer Hashmi has the latest from dubai. Talks started on saturday and it continues on the second day but the real objective is to not find a solution but build a consensus around the ukraine ten point piece formula which has been presented by president zelensky. What is interesting from ukraines Point Of View or rather a positive thing for them is that this meeting has been attended by those countries which have until now adopted a neutral stance in this war or have close ties with russia so countries like saudi arabia, india, turkey and china and they have decided to come and be part of this discussion so what eventually ukrainian officials are hoping is by the end of the week there will be some consensus where all the parties would agree and then president zelensky is hoping to host World Leaders later this year and these points which are agreed upon can be discussed further. This is a step towards arriving at some sort of consensus or peace solution but i do not think anyone is expecting there will be a solution to come out of these talks. That is the latest on the peace talks in ukraine being held in saudi arabia but we can go right now to portugal. Life from the capital. The final day of the visit of pope francis to the country, celebrating an open air mass before a huge crowd. This is a Riverside Park in the capital, we believe up to one and a half Million People have travelled somehow to this venue to follow the service. This is the culmination of celebrations for World Youth Day, the largest event organised by the Catholic Church. On saturday night, 1. 5 million pilgrims joined the pope at a vigil, many sleeping overnight in a park that is part of the venue you can see there, a venue specially created and built for the visit of the holy father. The weather, temperature is expected to soar to 41 celsius, over 100 fahrenheit. Pilgrims have travelled from Around The World to pray with pope francis. Remember that he has suffered some ill health earlier this year. Lets find out how this trip has gone for the pope and the vatican. Watching very closely as alison roberts. How has he done . figs alison roberts. How has he done . Sis you alison roberts. How has he done . Is you say, 1. 5 million, difficult to say the actual number because a lot of the people there today and last night are not registered pilgrims, they did not register for World Youth Day so he has clearly attracted vast numbers of people, many latecomers will have come from across portugal and also spain. Spanish is the language most hurt here and i think the pope will be very pleased with the way has five daysin very pleased with the way has five days in portugal have gone, clearly energised by being with young people and he has repeatedly urged them not to be afraid, that was a theme in the mass today and to go out there and engage with the world. In a sense he sees them, it seems, as a vehicle also to help him reform the church which he has said repeatedly is very much in need of change. fin is very much in need of change. On the subject of reforms, part of his message has been everyone is welcome, there is a space for everyone from all walks of life in the Catholic Church. Is that an indication perhaps of some of the tensions that he probably is suffering back at the vatican . Yes. Suffering back at the vatican . Yes, the hrase suffering back at the vatican . Yes, the phrase he suffering back at the vatican . Yes, the phrase he has suffering back at the vatican . Yes, the phrase he has used suffering back at the vatican . Yes, the phrase he has used a suffering back at the vatican . Yes the phrase he has used a cane is everyone, everyone, and everyone is welcome in the church and there are times of pressure from different groups to be included or excluded from the Catholic Church and there are certainly powerful people within the Catholic Church that are more conservative than he is. He has even used the phrase people around him have used the Phrase Conservative as a criticism and there have been some little incidents in and around the events here in lisbon with lgbtq people attending a service, not as part of World Youth Day and then conservative groups invading that service and the police having to be cold. Its the kind of thing we have seenin cold. Its the kind of thing we have seen in the church generally. Pope francis does not want to get directly involved in these cases but the fact he has repeatedly used this phrase, everyone is welcome, clearly is to mark the difference from some other figures is to mark the difference from some otherfigures in is to mark the difference from some other figures in the church. Other figures in the church. Alison, thanks so much. Now to a deadline set by west african countries for the leaders of a coup in niger to reinstate the president. Thats due to expire in the coming hours. The regional bloc, ecowas made up of west African Leaders has threatened potential Military Action if the regime fails to comply. Chanting. But theres some support for the coup within niger. This was a Demonstration Backing the coup leaders and against sanctions imposed by ecowas. Neighbouring countries mali, burkina faso and guinea have also leant their support to the coup leaders. And Algeria Which Borders Niger to the north has said it is categorically against armed intervention. France, though, says it will support efforts by ecowas to restore nigers elected president. Niger s Prime Minister was in paris on saturday . Meeting lawmakers and greeting protestors outside the niger embassy. He has dismissed pro coup protests taking place in his country. France has said it will support efforts to restore the country s elected president. Our correspondent, nkechi ogbonns, in lagos in neighbouring nigeria, explained why many residents support the coup. They still feel their former colonial master, france, has a lot of power in terms of political and economic power over them. They do not feel completely independent despite gaining independence since 1960. Some of them are also saying france has not helped in any way to change the situation in the region where it has been marred with islamist and jihadist movements in the sahel region so they really want a change and they believe that the coup leaders would bring that change to them. Lets now go live to our guest in niamey, niger abdurahman alkassoum. A political and Security Analyst on the sahel. Hello and welcome to the programme. Firstly, how on earth did we go from a model democracy to what we are experiencing and witnessing now in niger . I experiencing and witnessing now in nicer . ~ , experiencing and witnessing now in nicer . ~ ,. , experiencing and witnessing now in nicer . ~ ,. ,. , niger . It is part of the political strategy and the way democracy is implementing in this country and maybe also the correspondence from lagos, the weight the population, because also literally they are inside the population, the weight they see the role played by the colonial Master Thatis role played by the colonial master that is france. These are some factors that are really playing in the majority of what is happening. There have been some allegations made towards france and one of them is that france has been exploiting uranium in the country whereas money could have been given to the country to help build a dam, produce electricity for niger. Is that really a reason and niger and france has been courted throughout this cool period, is that one of the key reasons . ~ cool period, is that one of the key reasons . Kick no, i think these allegations, if you take an example of uranium, it is strategically good but if you in terms of economical Balance Input from uranium, how much it is comparing to other inputs. I think this is not enough but it can be of some strategic importance, social society and social media. In terms of ecowas, does it have the capacity to mount a Military Intervention . Capacity to mount a Military Intervention . ~. , , intervention . Militarily, they must make an application intervention . Militarily, they must make an application and intervention . Militarily, they must make an application and practice l intervention . Militarily, they must. Make an application and practice for many reasons because today you have Hundreds And Thousands of nigerian refugees in niger coming from North Eastern states and you have Hundreds Of Thousands in from the north west coming from other areas because niger is seen as the server place and the military and niger are seen as the best in this area and although in terms of the economy, thatis although in terms of the economy, that is technically how it will happen, they are going to use the military, they are going to send troops by land or this kind of thing. It is really going to be very difficult and its going to have a big consequence and i think nigeria will want to have big consequences, will want to have big consequences, will affect the north east and the north west and maybe the centre of nigeria and also it will affect other countries like the republican this kind of thing and look at what is happening today, this area, you have lydia and mali and the northeast and north east of nigeria and they have created another conflict which is going to have International Implications in many countries and many superpowers in this world. And really, west africa is going to be badly damaged. Unfortunately, we have run out of time, i wanted to talk about some of the other players including the gs but the other players including the g5 but hopefully another time. Thank you so much. Here in the uk, social Media Companies are set to crack down on People Smugglers posts that encourage Asylum Seekers to cross the english channel. The plans will see platforms like facebook, instagram and twitter work with the National Crime agency to take down posts that lure people into paying People Smugglers to make the dangerous journey in small boats. Downing street says theyll target content such as offers of fake documents and false claims of safe passage from france. The former Lost Prophets singer and convicted paedophile, ian watkins, has reportedly been stabbed in prison. Newspaper reports say he was attacked at hmp wakefield, where hes serving a 29 year sentence for child sex offences. The Prison Service said police are investigating an incident that happened yesterday. An investigation is under way after at least 57 competitors were taken ill following a World Triathlon race in sunderland. More than 50 supporters of the former pakistani Prime Minister, imran khan, have been detained across the country for protesting against his three Year Prison Sentence for corruption. Arrests were made in cities including peshawar, lahore and karachi but the demonstrations were more muted than the massive unrest that broke out after mr khans previous detention in may. Mr khan was found guilty of not declaring money earned from selling gifts he received while in office. This is attock prison, where the former Prime Minister has begun serving his sentence. The verdict means he is not allowed to hold Public Office for five years with pakistan just months away from a general election. Caroline davies has this from islamabad. Yes, we know he is injail, that has been confirmed by the authorities in pakistan, it took some time there was some confusion over where he would be imprisoned but we know over where he would be imprisoned but we know he is in jail at attock. His lawyers said they tried to see imran khan yesterday but were not able to do that and we heard from the head of attock who said they were not told the lawyers would need to have access to imran khan on that day outside visiting hours so clearly already some Tension Building between the legal team of imran khan and the prison authorities. We know his legal team say they are planning to appeal, that has been their intention all along and imran khan has said for many months he expected he would be arrested but the big question is whether or not his lawyers will be able to find any form of relief for him, will they be able to get bail, to appeal this case, to overturn it . We do not know but the way imran khan has been able to operate in pakistan has dramatically changed since the 9th of may when he was arrested last time and you can see that in the reaction to his arrest, the second arrest during the course of this year. Very different experiences on the 9th of may, we saw protests across the country that were quite dramatic and in some cases violent, particularly with military buildings seeming to be targeted. We had a Court Commanders house, the highest Military Official in lahore, we had the Army Headquarters in rawalpindi next to islamabad also had a march on it and in the hours since imran khan was arrested for the second time we have seen nothing on that scale. We have seen people arrested, we have heard from someone who wanted to remain anonymous but within the Punjab Police that there are around 100 people that had been arrested, pti supporters inside the Punjab Province alone. We have heard reports of other arrests around the rest of the country as well but really quite a small scale and it is a very different atmosphere. Imran khans party has had a significant crackdown on the course of the last few months and that is clearly having a real impact on the reactions we are seeing. This weekend marks six months since a huge Earthquake Hit Turkey and syria, killing over 50,000 people and leaving many more homeless. But amongst the tragedy there were stories of hope such as baby afraa, who was born beneath the rubble of her collapsed home. The bbc has caught up with her and challenges her new family is facing six months on. Hanan razek reports. It was seen as a miracle, a moment of hope following februarys devastating earthquake in syria and turkey. Baby afraa was rescued after being born beneath the rubble of a collapsed building. All of her close family, including her mother, were killed. But now, afraa has a new life, adopted by her uncle the man who pulled her from the rubble. Translation i started to dig with my hands in the rubble. L then, i could hear a voice, so carried on and, thank god, afraa came up in my hands. She was still attached to her mother by her Umbilical Cord when i found her. The video of afraas rescue in the syrian Town Ofjindayris went viral Around The World. The attention was intense and offers to adopted herflooded in. Her relatives were worried about her safety, even in hospital. With the help from the police, we managed to get extra security to protect her. The doctors at the hospital didnt seem to believe that i was her relative. I felt that he didnt want to give her to me. After a dna test proved the family are related to afraa, they were able to leave with her. Since then, they turned down offers to live abroad in the uk and the united arab emirates. The reason is i was scared they would take afraa away from me. I was also scared they would take my children away from me. That was what i feared the most. As the family feel they cant move abroad, they are searching for a permanent place to live in syria. Khalil s home was destroyed in the earthquake, so for two months following the disaster, he moved to this camp with afraa, his wife and their seven children. Thanks to help from well wishers, they have been able to rent this house but they say its very expensive and they dont know how much longer they will be able to stay here. I lost everything. It was like going back to square one. I cant even afford sending my kids to school. But there are People Living in worse conditions injindayris. The road ahead might be difficult but the family are grateful for the chance for a new start following a disaster which killed 4,000 people in North Western syria alone. Hanan razek, bbc news. Many of us started this morning with sunny spells and we continue with those into the afternoon with just some showers developing. That was the scene earlier in somerset, the Cumulus Cloud starting to build and we see the showers developing mainly across scotland and northern ireland, through western england and wales, they could be on the heavy side and perhaps thundery. Still fairly breezy around that north sea coast but that wind will ease and maximum temperatures getting up to 17 19, perhaps 20 degrees. Warmer than it was yesterday with a bit more sunshine around this afternoon. This evening and tonight those showers slowly fade, were looking at clear skies to take us into the early part of monday morning. Temperatures in the countryside could dip low but typically 7 10, maybe 11 degrees first thing monday. Throughout monday its a dry day, this area of High Pressure trying to nudge its way in. One little Weather System to the west will slowly push in later in the day bringing an increase in cloud but for most of us its dry on monday with some sunshine. Some scattered showers mainly in the north of the uk and as i said later on more cloud in parts of south west wales, south west england, temperatures into the high teens to the low 20s. That little Weather System just towards the west will move further eastward as we go through tuesday so there will be more cloud around, maybe some spots of rain likely across england and wales, the best of the sunshine scotland, northern ireland, the far north of england, sunshine later in the day and maximum temperatures on tuesday, high teens to the low 20s. If you are looking for something warmer well start to see it later in the week. By wednesday weve a ridge of High Pressure building from the south west, bringing settled weather and with that a southerly wind. As we go through Late Wednesday into thursday, we see the temperatures increasing, the air being drawn in from the near continent so by thursday temperatures will get up into the mid to high 20s. Only temporary, though, because by friday we see a Weather Front moving through and those temperatures will start to drop again. Thats it from me. Bye bye.
