Like the usa, germany and brazil knocked out. And englands lionnesses were so nearly on the end of the latest upset against Nigeria The African Side were more than a match and could so easily have won the match inside 90 minutes. Englands struggles not helped by in form laurenjames being sent off, for an off the ball incident, shades of David Beckham in 1998, if youre old enough to remember that. The match went all the way to penalties but this time as not the case back then england progressed keeping their Dreams Of A First Womens World Cup alive. Jane dougall is in brisbane for us. England were given an almighty scare and questions will be asked as to why they couldnt score against a country ranked 36 places below them. In contrast nigeria looked strong right from the start and were the better side throughout this match. In the first half england had a shout for a penalty when it looked as though rachel daly had been pushed Out Of The Box but var deemed it no penalty for that much to the disgust of the fans for them. In the second half drama. Striker laurenjames was shown a straight red card and Video Replays showed that she stamped on nigerias so she was sent off. England were in real trouble. But the defender lucy bronze told the bbc that laurenjames would learn from her mistake. Obviously, shes a bit upset. I think its just frustrations. Shes a young and not one person thinks anything bad of lj. Shes been a superstar in the first three games. It said we will miss her for a game now. Everybody knows how much of a talent she is. Shes young and she will from this experience. England then had to play extra time with just ten players no goals scored and so it went to penalties. Englands Georgia Stanway gave fans a scare when she missed the first one. But nigeria missed their first two penalties. England held fast to go through 4 2 with chloe kelly scoring the decisive spot kick. She said afterwards they were a real team who had held fast when the chips were down. I think thats what football is all about for the fighting to the end and be ready in the moment and being able to take it to penalties, for us it was great. Of course their air a great site so we would be up against it at times. We cant hide away from that. Every team in this competition, theres a reason why everyones here. England will certainly miss laurenjames that she will not be able to play in the quarterfinals and could actually face a longer suspension if fifa deem it worthy. Her loss will definitely be felt given she is englands leading scorer of the tournament. The team will now travel back to their base just outside of sydney where they will have six days of rest. Then they will play their Quarterfinal Match which will be against either jamaica or columbia. Well as jane was saying, england will learn who their next opponents are on tuesday. Jamaica are in the womens world cup knockout stages for the first time, with colombia seeking a first ever victory at this stage. So plenty riding on both sides for this one. Colombia earned their spot by topping their group including a famous win over germany. Its their second time in the last 16 of the womens world cup having also made the first Knockout Round in 2015. Jamaica have perhaps been the surprise so far to come second in their group ahead of brazil theyre yet to concede a goal in the tournament too. We are going to come out and try to give it a good shot and try to win the game. Somebody will be knocked out. Its like a boxing match, somebody will go down. We are going to try to be the one, we want to be standing when the game is over so we have to give it our best. We are playing a great team, very good players. It will be a great match. After their early tournament wobbles the co hosts australia seem back on track they beat denmark 2 0 earlier in sydney to seal their place in the quarterfinals in front of a crowd of more than 75,000, equalling the record set in their opener against ireland. Australia loves a sporting occasion, the rise of womens football has been remarkable. Swifter then swift. No guarantee of an encore at this stage of the world cup, especially given denmarks early enterprise, no faster starter then harder but danger came to nothing. The aussies began to settle. You can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website thats bbc. Co. Uk sport. From me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. Hello there. Consistently dry, warm summer weather has been hard to come by over recent weeks. There is a bit of a change on the way through the next few days it is going to turn drier and warmer, but perhaps not for all that long. Let me show you whats going on. Weve got one quite potent area of low Pressure Swirling over northern europe, bringing very heavy rain and strong winds here, getting close enough to shetland to bring some quite brisk winds. A much weaker Weather System further south, feeding a lot of cloud, mist and murk and some splashes of rain into parts of wales, central and Southern Parts of england. For much of northern england, Northern Ireland and scotland will see sunny spells, some showers in the north east of scotland, where it will be turning quite windy, particularly for shetland. Gusts of wind here 50 Miles Per Hour or a touch more through the afternoon and temperatures for Lerwick Ofjust 12 degrees celsius. More generally, 17 to 20 degrees, still a touch below the average for the time of year. Now through tuesday night where we see clear skies across many parts of the uk it will turn quite cool, quite fresh indeed, quite chilly. But out towards the west will see more cloud, mist and murk rolling in. And temperatures in plymouth, 1a degrees. Some increasingly humid air spreading in behind this weak warm front here. That will continue to bring some areas of cloud and perhaps some splashes of rain northwards and eastwards. As we head through the day on wednesday, expect some mist and some fog around some of the coasts and over the hills. But there will be some spells of sunshine too, perhaps the best of the sunshine across northern and eastern parts. Still windy and very chilly across shetland. Elsewhere, though, starting to turn just a little bit warmer. And thursday is set to be the warmest day of all for the majority. The southerly wind bringing that warm air northwards across just about all parts of the uk. With that there will still be some areas of cloud, could be a bit of mist and fog around through thursday morning as well. But some spells of sunshine in the far north east still with that quite brisk wind coming down from the north, temperatures will struggle 1a for lerwick, but elsewhere, temperatures widely up into the 20s, maybe 26 or 27 degrees across parts of south east england. But that warmth and humidity will be short lived because as we get into friday, this frontal system, this cold front will push its way eastwards. That could bring some heavy and possibly thundery rain behind it, a mix of sunny spells and showers. But we change the wind direction. The winds coming back in off the atlantic from the west or the south west. And so it will start to feel cooler again. 20 degrees for glasgow, for belfast, cardiff and plymouth, still 25 at this stage across eastern england. And then as we head into the weekend, well, High Pressure to the south where youre closest to that area of High Pressure in Southern Parts. There will be a fair amount of dry weather, but further north and west, low pressure rolling back in. And that is going to generate some quite heavy showers, maybe some longer spells of rain at times. So across the north and the west of the uk, expect quite a few showers through the weekend. Certainly a cooler, fresher feel the further south and east you are. Well, not as many showers more in the way of dry weather, some spells of sunshine and temperatures of 20 or 21 degrees as we head into next week. Well, it looks like low pressure will dominate the scene. That is going to bring some outbreaks of rain at times and for the most part, temperatures will be at or below the average for the time of year. So a brief warmer spell this week, but it may not last all that long. Welcome to newsday, reporting live from singapore. Aiemann mariko 0i.
