Dominic hughes, bbc news. So how much does a Junior Doctor earn . Well ,the term covers someone just out of Medical School right up to someone with more than ten years experience. So our Health Correspondentjim reed asked twoJunior Doctors to show him their payslips. Pay really is at the centre of this dispute. So lets talk you through two real life examples ofJunior Doctors, starting with dr robert gittings. He is just finishing his first year as a Junior Doctor, working full time, so around 48 hours a week, in the Infectious Diseases ward of a big london hospital. And we asked robert to share his payslip with us. As youll see, hes paid a basic wage ofjust over £14 an hour. But then there are extra payments to cover night shifts and weekends, which are compulsory. He doesnt have a choice in doing those. His full take home pay, then, injune, aftertaxes, deductions, student loan and so on was just over £2,000. It would bring his annual salary to just about £37,000, including those extra payments. He says hes now looking to work abroad for a while, possibly in australia. To be honest, i always wanted to do that even when i was in Medical School. Whats changed recently though, is im not confident that the pay here is going to improve as much as id like it to. And if that isnt the case, then i would really quite strongly consider staying in australia. So robert isjust finishing his first year as a Junior Doctor. But as doctors get more skill and experience, they can move up these pay bands. Lets talk about a doctor whos further on, then, in her career. This is dr kiran rahim, also a Junior Doctor. She graduated more than ten years ago, working part time, partly because she has a young family. Shes whats called a paediatric registrar, so can be in charge of an entire childrens ward in hospital. Looking at her wage slip, she brings in a basic wage per hour, roughly £28. So double what robert was getting paid. Also some extra payments here for working in london, night shifts, and weekends. It would bring her take home pay injuly, bearing in mind she works about 30 hours a week, part time to just over £2,000. If she was working full time, her salary would be roughly £69,000, she says. She says, for her, this dispute isnt just about wages, but about wider working conditions. I have seen a decline in sort of the morale, in the working environment, in the safety of our working environment, in our working conditions, in my own sort of living practice. So this is not something that i can say, oh, it used to be, oh, it maybe never used to be. I have seen it deteriorate. You know, the team ethos, the team morale. Two doctors, then, with very different experiences. The government says its latest pay offer recognises the important work thatJunior Doctors do, but has to balance that against the risks of higher inflation. Our Health Correspondentjim reed. The number of migrants detected in the uk after crossing the channel in small boats in the last five years has passed 100,000, according to new figures. Numbers have only been counted officially since the start of 2018. In the same period, about 55,000 people have been identified at border points, or found after entering the uk. Simonjones reports from dover. The government has repeatedly promised to stop the boats. But when the weather is calm, the boats keep coming, crossing the worlds busiest Shipping Lane in the hope of reaching the uk. These dinghies really, youd put maybe, i dont know, 20 people on them but looking at the size of them and theyve got 50, 60, sometimes 70 on board, so that is the first thing, is that theyre just heavily overloaded. But the second thing is that theyre being brought through the Shipping Lanes and the dinghies have got no navigation. More migrants have been brought to Shore At Dover today after being picked up at sea. The Home Secretary has warned its set to be a tough summer. 755 people crossed the channel yesterday in 11; boats, the highest daily total so far this year. That means more than 100,000 people have been detected making the journey since the crossings started in earnest five years ago. Over that period, people arriving on small boats account for less than 3 of those who have moved to the uk. Ministers, though, have described the numbers as unacceptable. This week the governments been talking up what its doing to try to reduce crossings. So theres increased cooperation with Social Media Firms to try to stop smugglers advertising journeys online. Theres a new agreement with turkey designed to prevent the export of boat parts, and also the first Asylum Seekers were moved on to a barge in dorset. But the 100,000 figure risks overshadowing that all. The lifeboat yesterday had to rescue 17 people from the sea, a sign once again of the dangers in the channel. It really hits home the magnitude of the situation. You know, 100,000 is an enormous amount of people. Yeah, we need to be looking at safe legal routes. The deterrents arent working. Ministers know, though, they will ultimately be judged on numbers, making the 100,000 figure an unwelcome milestone. Simonjones, bbc news, dover. Well, the government will take some comfort from the fact that the numbers making the crossing so far this year are down by about 15 compared with the same period last year. But so far this year, the numbers entering the eu illegally have gone up by about 13 . Critics say what happens out there in the channel is less about Government Policy and much more to do with the weather. For example, this morning weather. For example, this morning we saw several boats being brought into shore when it was very calm, perhaps 200 people arriving in total. After that, the wind whipped up total. After that, the wind whipped up in the crossings have start for the day. Simonjones, the day. Simon jones, thank the day. Simonjones, thank you. Have stopped. The time is 13 17. In the last few minutes, its emerged that migrants are being temporarily removed from the Bibby Stockholm Barge after traces of Legionella Bacteria were found in the water. Lets go to westminster and speak to our Political Correspondent ione wells. Explain what is happening. Well, looks like the Uk Health Security Agency carried out tests on this barge before migrants moved on to it. Migrants started to board the barge over the last week. Since then, tests have come Back Finding Traces of that Legionella Bacteria in it which can cause a type of serious pneumonia. My understanding is that none of the migrants on board who have been using the water supply have shown any symptoms of illness, but as a precaution, they are being taken off the barge for the time being. The mayor of the west midlands, andy street, has released a statement this lunchtime. Live now to our correspondent, phil mackie. Phil, what has he said . Well, i have a lengthy statement, but i think the crux of it as he said whoever has targeted this beloved landmark in this way has messed with the wrong pub, the wrong community and the wrong authorities. The building has stood for more than 250 years, it was Still Standing a week ago. The pub was empty by then, it had new owners and then there was a fire on saturday night. But the bulk of the building was Still Standing after that, the inside had been gutted. On monday, diggers came and knocked it down without permission and that has caused a massive outcry across the back country and across the country. One local said today this cant keep happening, entry empty pubs keep getting burned down, something has to be done about this. There are two investigations about what happened to the Crooked House, one is an Enforcement Investigation by the council and the other is a Criminal Investigation Being Led by Staffordshire Police who said they believe the cause of fire is arson. Andy street has said they are all laser focused on trying to get answers about what happened and they are still appealing and saying they hope it can be re built brick by brick. That may not be possible, so many bricks have been taken away as souvenirs by people, but they do want to get the Crooked House reinstated in some way. Thanks very much, phil reinstated in some way. Thanks very much, phil mackie. Onto the world cup, and it is the lionesses quarter final match, tomorrow morning. Theyll be taking on colombia, after edging past nigeria on penalties in their last game. Colombia are the lowest ranked side in the competition, but they have a huge following in australia. Our Sports CorrespondentJane Dougall Reports from sydney. Colombias going to win colombias supporters have lit up this womens world cup with their passion and spectacular costumes. Andreas and sandra are getting ready for the match against england. In colombia, were using our own cameras to express life, happiness, come together, power, strength, commitment. What a save from earps we want to be prepared, in terms of what the strengths are of colombia, and we recognise them as a very, very, very good team. I think theyve shown that throughout the tournament so far. We will be going out there to put in a very strong performance, because we know colombia will be doing the same. This is a pinch me moment for the colombian players, and they want to record it. But by getting here, they have proved a point. Womens football hasnt always been a priority in their country. Over the past decade, the womens team have had to overcome many obstacles. They didnt have a coach for a year, and former players allege that theyre still owed pay. This squad have fought to take colombia the furthest in a womens world cup. Now they have the challenge of taking on the european champions. A win against nigeria, but it was a narrow one after extra time and penalties for england. They know they may not be so lucky against another formidable team. And there is another issue. Things like that can happen. And its not good, we know and she knows, and she will take the learning from that, and we just support her. They claim to be the most devoted fans in this tournament. Colombia jane dougall, bbc news, sydney dozens of Hot Air Balloons have taken off from bristol, as the International Balloon fiesta gets properly under way, after yesterday evenings flight had to be called off because of windy conditions. The annual fiesta is an important event for thousands of people, and for one family in particular, it is a poignant time, as john maguire reports. If ever anyone was born to fly, it was pete gregory. A Third Generation hot air balloonist, and also an airline pilot, he lived his life in the skies. Since the age of three, pete and his brother dan often flew with their father, andrew. Ballooning is a feel, and he was passionate about aviation as a job, and ballooning as his hobby and his passion. The brothers took up competitive flying. Here they are winning thejunior World Championships in poland two years ago. They were both involved in a contest in worcestershire injune, when petes balloon crashed and he was killed. Dans ground crew that day was andrew, with his wife, louise, doing the same for pete. Losing your son is just. Yeah, its just horrific. People say, oh, he was doing something that he loved when he sort of left the planet, but thats sort of bittersweet, in reality. It really is. I mean, i think its also a lot harderfor his mother because she was on the marker cross to actually. Where they were all dropping the markers, and she was, yeah, basically there. So its very, very raw. An Air Accident Investigation will seek to discover what happened and crucially, what, ifany, lessons can be learned. Dan is determined to carry on flying. I know for a fact if i was just sat on the sofa at home, pete would be there, like, knocking on my why are you doing that, dan . You need to go out and compete and do the best you can. And hopefully, thats what i can do for him over this summer and, also, years ahead. But andrew has reservations. Because pete cant fly any more, sort of, so why should i . If you know, in a way. Id like to think i will get back into it, but i think it willjust be a bit, a bit longer. Hot air balloons are more than a pastime for this family. Its their profession, their passion. So in petes name, theyve set up a trust to buy a balloon that Trainee Pilots will be able to use. Encouraging the next generation of balloonists was an ambition of petes. He aimed to become an instructor. But keeping his name alive, keeping Pete Gregory Flying will at least offer the family some solace. Jon maguire, bbc news, bristol. Time for a look at the weather.
