Translation well deepen our strikes. L well minimise the risks to our forces in the next stages of the war, and were going to increase the attacks from today. Well increase the attacks, and therefore i call on gaza City Residents specifically to continue moving south for their safety. Well, 20 trucks carrying medicines and food were allowed to cross from egypt into gaza saturday, bringing desperately needed supplies to the territorys besieged residents. The Rafah Crossing has been closed since hamas carried out its bloody attack in israel two weeks ago, and aid agencies say the situation in gaza is now catastrophic, with the territory under siege and constant israeli bombardment. The convoy that entered gaza was carrying food, water and medicine, which have been running out. But israel refused to allow in fuel needed to power Hospital Generators and water pumping stations. The un says at least 100 aid trucks are needed every day to cover gazas essential needs and that it is negotiating for a second aid convoy of 20 30 trucks to be allowed into gaza on sunday. Speaking at a Special Summit In Cairo to discuss the israel gaza war, the un secretary general, antonio guterres, said much more needed to be done for the people of gaza than the aid that was currently supplied. Those trucks need to move as quickly as possible in a massive, sustained and safe way from egypt into gaza. A 20 truck convoy of the egyptian red crescent is moving today, and i want to express my deep gratitude to egypt for the essential role egypt is playing in this regard. But the people of gaza need a commitment for much, much more a Continuous Delivery of aid to gaza at the scale that is needed. And we are working nonstop with all parties that are relevant to make it happen. The british prime minister, rishi sunak, has called for all Water Supplies to be restored to gaza wherever it is physically possible. And here in the us, President Biden says his Administration Remains committed to ensuring that civilians in gaza will continue to have access to food, water and medical care without diversion by hamas. Our correspondent wyre davies has the latest from tel aviv, and a warning his report contains images you may find distressing. Two weeks into this war, signs of limited progress as aid began to enter gaza through the border with egypt. Some 20 truckloads in total not nearly enough according to aid agencies, bringing in basic supplies, food, water and medicine. There have been an unprecedented number of israeli airstrikes against targets in gaza. Many victims of the bombing are children, and the humanitarian crisis is worsening. Tahir and her six children are some of the many sheltering in crowded public buildings. Translation there is not even 1 of a good, healthy and safe i life for a child. There is no safety. If we dont die from war, we will die from epidemics and diseases. At an Emergency Summit on the crisis in cairo, the Foreign Secretary criticised hamass murderous actions and reminded israel of its obligations. I have spoken directly to the Israeli Government about their duty to respect International Law and the importance of preserving civilian lives in gaza. There is a reason why many israelis support what their government is now planning a huge invasion of gaza to crush hamas. Two weeks ago, almog was a peace loving 20 something having the time of her life at a Music Festival in the israeli desert an innocence she will never recover. As squads of hamas gunmen stormed the festival, shooting indiscriminately, almog fled for her life, finding cover under some desert scrub, where she would hide motionless for eight hours. I didnt think they were going to take hostages. I was still. Every time i heard or see their interaction, they shoot, and they were shooting for killing. Today is the first time almog has ventured out in two weeks, the nerves in her leg damaged by the ordeal. From someone who believed in coexistence, she is now a frightened sceptic about the possibility of peace between israelis and palestinians. Our correspondent Rushdi Abu Alouf is in the Southern Gazan City of khan yunis, where most of the aid supplies have been stored while they are checked by United Nations officials. Earlier, he was at the Rafah Crossing and he told us what he saw at the border. Yeah, wejust left rafah, crossing back in khan younis, the place where most of the like, all of the trucks that were brought today are now in a warehouse for the un. A drop in the ocean, everybody here is describing this aid, but its hope that opens for 2. 3 million people. A window of hope opened today after transferring those 20 trucks carrying essential medical kit, including a portable Operation Room that should be placed somewhere here in this hospital soon. The meeting in the un is to make sure of two things. One thing is to make the priority for this very small amount of aid. Second is to make sure that hamas is not involved in distributing or taking any of these. We understand from very early in the morning from a senior hamas source that hamas has agreed to some form of not intervening in this. They said the crossing is open from our side and we are not going to intervene. The un will handle the distribution of what they have today a very small amount of medicine and food and probably some medical equipment, but very big hope after that, that egypt might want a sustainable humanitarian corridor to feed those people who need in this area, especially the people in the southern part of gaza city. We are talking about two thirds of the population in this area. We understand that more than 4,500 trucks are on the other side of the border in egypt, waiting for that meeting to finish and for the mechanism to to be clear. 0nce everybody is happy with the outcome of that meeting and the outcome of the first shipment, i think tomorrow or after tomorrow, its a matter of time, we can see more and more goods and food are delivered. But for now, we are certain to say that nothing has been distributed. All of the 20 trucks that were loaded back to back on the no mans land between egypt and gaza is now in warehouse for day one. We have to say that today was relatively less fighting, less air strikes and less hamas rockets into israel. There is no official ceasefire. We tried to ask hamas about it. They said we are not aware of any ceasefire. But we noticed after covering two weeks of this war that today is different. Today, less fighting, today, less fire. The father of the freed american hostage who was seized at gunpoint by hamas told the bbc that his daughter is doing well, after being held for nearly two weeks in gaza. Mother and daughterjudith and Natalie Raanan are now the first hostages to be freed since hamass deadly attack on southern israel earlier this month. Originally from illinois, they were in israel visiting family. Hamas says they were released for humanitarian reasons. The ranaan family said the womens release was a moment of extraordinary relief. But they added in a statement unfortunately, we do not have the privilege of celebrating their return or of mourning our lost loved ones. We remain entirely focused on the efforts to secure the return of our eight otherfamily members that remain captive in gaza, along with the estimated 192 other people still held hostage. 0ur North America correspondent nomia iqbal is in chicago, where she has been talking to the family and neighbors of the released hostages. This Close Knit Community here in evanston, its the suburb of chicago wherejudith and natalie are from its just been terrific watching the last two weeks unfold. And to know that the people they love and care for are involved in that has been indescribable for them. Im in the area where the familys local rabbi lives, and he has been leading prayers and services for them, and its just absolute relief that they are ok. I spoke to, as you mentioned there, uri ranaan, natalies father. He said he had a two minute conversation with his daughter in which they didnt go into details about her life in captivity. He said that she is going well. Shes a tough girl. It will take her some time to get over what has happened, but she will do it. And he also told me that he had spoken to President Biden after he learnt that his ex wife and daughter were being released, and he thanked mr biden for his efforts in securing their release. The us and the uk are working with the qatari government to try and get its citizens back. But mr biden also spoke to natalie and judith as well, saying that he was looking forward to them returning to the us. We dont know exactly when that will be, but uri ranaan said that he hopes it is next week, because thats when natalie turns 18. As you say, nomia, a small glimmer of hope there, but coming at a time when so many others are still being held. And ijust wonder how the community where you are is dealing with that, cognisant of the situation and the fact that this isnt over. Its really hard for them to fully celebrate the fact thatjudith and natalie are back, because, as you say, there are still dozens and dozens of hostages and people who are still unaccounted for, and that includes extended members of natalie and judith s family. They were in israel. They were in the kibbutz in southern israel celebrating natalies graduation and also her grandmothers 85th birthday. Her grandma survived the attack by hamas, but there are still members who are unaccounted for. And the community here say that they are of course relieved to know thatjudith and natalie are good and well, and they will come home soon, but they are very much focused also on hopefully trying to get back the other members of the family who are still unaccounted for. A short while ago i spoke to patrick hamilton, head of the delegation to the us and canada for the International Committee of the red cross, about the humanitarian situation in gaza and the release of two american hostages. Welcome to you, patrick. Thanks so much forjoining us. Now, we know that the International Committee of the red cross was involved in the release and the handover of two us hostages who were being held in gaza when that took place yesterday. Can you tell us any more about the red crosss role here and how this all came about . So thanks very much for having me on your programme, and indeed, we were able to carry out the facilitation of the release of those two hostages yesterday, which clearly is a positive sliver of hope and whats otherwise been a really devastating couple of weeks for all concerned. And clearly there remain a large number of israeli families that are still extremely concerned about the remaining hostages that are still held, captured, and for whom there is still at this stage no news, no access and no confirmation as to exactly when they will be released. The icrc, the International Committee of the red cross, has this role to work as a neutral, impartial, independent humanitarian neutral intermediary in conflict. And so we have been working since the last two weeks, non stop, at all sorts of levels, engaging with hamas, the israeli authorities and anyone else that could have, indeed, an impact on the broader humanitarian outcomes around this conflict, including on this as a top priority, to try and help these hostages in any way that we can. And so weve been seeking access to them to try and provide medications, to try and provide or facilitate messages being passed between the families and their hostages, to act as an intermediary to facilitate their release. But weve also been saying from the very beginning that the very taking of hostages is prohibited by International Humanitarian law, the laws of armed conflict, and that civilians should be protected from this. And important there to make, patrick. Just as you were speaking, we were looking at images on the screen of that handover taking place with mother and daughter hand in hand with the red cross aid worker there, of course wearing the red cross vest. Are you able to tell us anything more about how they seemed when they were released, or even a sense from the team when they were able to hand the two women over . I cant really comment on exactly the welfare, as it were, or the state of the two hostages. I think that our team, as the rest of us, were just simply extremely relieved that they were being released and that this opportunity had come up that we could play some kind of role in trying to help them and the sides come to a conclusion on their fate and, of course, for their families, who had been worried absolutely sick about them for the last two weeks. So, we were extremely pleased that this took place and, of course, against this backdrop of this really devastating situation and conflict over the last two weeks. It was that first small sliver of hope that means so much to them as individuals and their families, but also as a symbol of a first positive, small step in this otherwise immense situation of suffering for so many. Absolutely, patrick. I want to touch a little bit more on the humanitarian situation there on the ground because, of course, as you know, a convoy of 20 trucks getting in today. The message from the United Nations that that isnt nearly enough. Just talk to us about the needs of the people there on the ground right now in gaza. Thats right. I mean, i think its clear that this is, indeed, on the one hand, a very positive step that this has happened, that there has been a small amount of aid that has been able to make its way here to gaza today but it is, indeed, a drop in the ocean, as the un have been saying and youve got 650,000 people that are in desperate need of access to some kind of fresh water. The hospital and Health Infrastructure and system is really on its knees. Doctors have been working in this Health Infrastructure non stop for the last two weeks with having to try and deal with immense numbers of wounded coming in. They themselves dont know whats been happening to their own families, they havent been able to check on them, and some of them are beginning to break down. Thousands of people have taken part in pro palestinian protests in several cities across the world. Police say up to 100,000 people took part in a pro palestinian march in london. Ten people were arrested, most for public order offences. The co organisers, the palestine solidarity campaign, called for an immediate ceasefire in gaza and for full humanitarian aid to be sent in. The march finished outside downing street. Police had earlier warned that that anyone showing support for hamas would face arrest. And here in washington on saturday, pro palestinian demonstrators marched from the Washington Monument to the us capitol, calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza. The protest was one of several planned in cities across the us this weekend. The war has provoked an outpouring of posts on social media over the past couple of weeks. Now, Facebook Parent Company meta has apologised for adding the word terrorist to the biographies of some instagram users who describe themselves as palestinian. Meta said it fixed a problem that briefly caused inappropriate arabic translations in some of its products. It told the bbc, we sincerely apologise that this happened. Bbc reporter Azadeh Moshiri has more. The apology comes after one user flagged the issue on x, formerly known as twitter. Now, he isnt palestinian himself but he tested the issue out after hearing it had happened to one of his friends. This is his Instagram Bio with just the arabic word alhamdulillah. Instagram translated it to thank god. Its also commonly translated to praise be to god. But when he added the word palestinian next to a flag, this happened after clicking see translation. Viewers were given an english translation, reading praise be to god. Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom. Meta has told the bbc it has fixed the issue that, in their words, briefly caused inappropriate arabic translations in some of its products. They also told the bbc that they sincerely apologise that this happened. Meta is also facing accusations that its been Shadow Banning Pro Palestinian content. Now, Shadow Banning is when a platform reduces the visibility of a users account or their content on the platform. But that usually happens when a user has fallen foul of the community guidelines. Meta earlier this week did acknowledge that there was a bug affecting their stories feature. Those are those posts that only last 2a hours. And in a statement, they said this bug affected accounts equally around the globe and had nothing to do with the Subject Matter of the content. They also said that they fixed that bug as soon as possible but this isnt the first time that they faced accusations of Shadow Banning Pro Palestinian content. In fact, last year, the Model Bella Hadid made similar claims about her own content that was pro palestinian. And even before that, in 2021, when meta was facing similar allegations, it asked for an independent review of its moderation of the conflict that year. And this is what that review found. It found that metas actions did have an adverse human rights impact on the rights of palestinian users to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, political participation and non discrimination. But the review did not find that there was any intentional racial or political bias on metas part. Now, instagram has released a Transparency Tool that allows you to check if your Instagram Account has any restrictions placed upon it and we have a whole how to about that on our website, so please do check it out. Sir Bobby Charltons record stood for decades the legacy of one of footballs most remarkable careers. Born in northumberland, charlton first represented englands schoolboys and in 1954, Hejoined The Club which would define him Manchester United. Charlton scores a beauty theyve equalised but then came tragedy the Munich Air Crash of 1958 in which 23 people, including eight united players, died. Charlton suffered only minor injuries. Id like to say a few words to my mother. I hope shes 0k. Yes. And taken it well. But it was an experience which shaped his life. Its unbelievable, really, that Something Like that should happen and all your pals get killed and suddenly, youre youre there with hardly a scratch on you. And just. Sometimes, i feel it doesnt seem right, you know . Slowly, united rebuilt their team with charlton its cornerstone. Charlton headed it home cheering and applause. It was a typically generous sentiment from a man known for his integrity, as well as his remarkable talent one of the most celebrated and most prolific players that football has ever seen. Theyjust dont come any better than that sir Bobby Charlton, who has died at the age of 86. Stay with us here on bbc news hello. Although storm babet is now easing away, well continue to see flooding and disruption over the next day or so. Now, lets just take a look at where the rain has fallen over the past 2a hours. Its been heavy and persistent across parts of england, wales and particularly for northern and eastern scotland, too. If we have a look atjust how much rain has fallen since wednesday with this storm babet, many areas have seen between 100 and 200mm. Now, for places, thats almost twice the expected monthly rainfall. Thankfully, though, sunday is looking drier with lighter winds, too, so a window of much quieter weather on the way. For the rest of the overnight period through into the early hours of monday, still a few showers around across the far north of scotland, one or two in the west. Elsewhere, 2 9 degrees are overnight lows for most of us. Could be a touch cooler first thing in the countryside. But the low pressure thats been such a troublemaker over recent days is drifting away towards the north on sunday. The isobars become more widely spaced, showing that its not going to be as windy as it has been the breeze just coming in from a westerly direction. So, thatll bring one or two showers for north west scotland, perhaps a few for wales, the South West Of England as well. But as they drift eastwards, they tend to ease away, so much drier, thankfully, for eastern scotland, right down towards east anglia in the southeast. A largely dry day towards northern ireland, too, and temperatures ranging between around about ten for stornoway to about 16 down towards the london region. But then, we will see the next area of low pressure just moving in later on monday. Now, this is storm bernard. Its been named by the portuguese Weather Service and its going to bring the next spell of wet and windy weather on monday. So, we start off monday on a dry note. Some mist and some fog patches. Could be a touch of frost. But it clouds over from the south and during the afternoon, this area of rain will spill its way in. To the north of that, most places looking dry, around about 10 16 degrees, but the wet and the windy weather in the south Willjust Push its way a little bit further north. So, into tuesday, you can see where were expecting to see some showers around, turning a little bit breezy again towards the east coast. A bit of uncertainty exactly where this rainfall is going to be by this stage but could be quite unwelcome for some of us. Turning a little bit milder as we see The Rain Coming in from the south after that window of drier weather for some of us sunday into monday. Things really are looking fairly autumnal and unsettled through much of the week ahead. Bye for now. Voiceover this is bbc news. We will have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. Yeah. So if you can just start off just introducing yourself and, you know. 0k.
