The good news in this report today is that a feasible . The good news in this report today is that a lot feasible . The good news in this report today is that a lot of report today is that a lot of measures that are being put in place which i campaigned for over the last 15 years are working. For example, tax havens are now causing a third of the harm that they did and companies are paying more tax. But this report is right, the team that wrote it are correct, the wealthy are still getting away with paying much less tax than they should. Their claim is that that is because of the problems created by offshore. If im honest, im not completely convinced by that argument, they are arguing for this global minimum tax, and i see enormous problems in getting any form of agreement on it, and i was involved in negotiating that many of the International Agreements that we have on this kind of abuse. White it is worth noting it is not that long since the major countries of the world agreed a plan to have a global minimum 15 tax on Company Profits but what has been the reality implementing that . The reali that the reality implementing that . The reality that was going very slowly because the plan was agreed in outline but the principles that really underpin it are onlyjust moving into legislation. We dont know how that will work as yet, to be blunt, we havent seen the full outcome of that, what we have seen is more than outcome from the previous agreement which was to track the profits of Global Companies around the world using something called country by country reporting which i created. It is something called country by country reporting which i created. Reporting which i created. It is now the law in 70 reporting which i created. It is now the law in 70 countries reporting which i created. It is now the law in 70 countries around reporting which i created. It is now the law in 70 countries around the | the law in 70 countries around the world. Thats definitely working. I expect the 15 minimum tax to have an impact but not as much as people hope because its is very limited and thatis hope because its is very limited and that is what i fear of these proposals. They are very limited because the scope for Attacking Tax Havensis because the scope for attacking tax havens is now relatively small. The 250 billion sounds a lot but wont produce much for the uk. Ive been working on how we can increase tax on the uk to tackle this problem and have suggested Tax Increases of 100 billion on a report im working on, taxing wealth, which you can find online. Im beginning to think we need to stop looking so much at tax havens and how our domestic tank systems are not taxing the wealthy by enough because they are not. Richard murphy, we have to leave it there, thank you for your thoughts today. The Taiwanese Electronics giant foxconn, which builds millions of iphones, along with a range of other devices, is under investigation in china. The government controlled global times newspaper, citing anonymous sources, reports that officials conducted Tax Inspections at foxconn businesses in two chinese provinces. The companys share price dropped by 2. 9 following the news. Foxconn is the biggest maker of iphones for apple and is one of the largest employers in the world. Heres our Asia Business reporterjoao da silva. According to a report on the Chinese State controlled newspaper global times, foxconn is being scrutinised on two fronts. It is facing land use and tax investigations. The scope of these inspections seems wide, targeting Foxconn Assets in different provinces across the country. Foxconn, which is the biggest maker of iphones and one of the largest employers in the world, has said it will actively cooperate with the chinese authorities. Now, what is really interesting here is the timing of all this. Just last month, foxconn s founder, terry gou, resigned from the companys board. He did so because he is running as a candidate in taiwans president ial election in just a few months. And since he announced his intention to run, a lot has been said about how his Business Interests could make him vulnerable to political pressure from beijing. Mr gou remains a major shareholder in foxconn. Joao da silva there. Hello, and welcome to your questions answered on bbc news. The conflict in israel and gaza is of course complicated, and youve been emailing us your questions and also turning to the internet to ask questions. Weve been going through our inbox and also looking at what people have been searching for on search engines. Joining me now to answer some of those questions, is frank gardner, the bbc s security correspondent here with me in the studio and paul adams, our Diplomatic Correspondent injerusalem. Welcome to you both. So lets get started with the questions. First we have a question for you, paul. Asadar asks, what caused the war between israel and hamas . Asadar, that is a good and important question with a complicated answer. I will try and boil it down. This is not the first time israel and hamas have been engaged in a violent confrontation, there have been regular bouts of violence between the sides in the past ever since hamas took over in gaza in 2007. The immediate trigger this time was this appalling set of massacres perpetrated by hamas on communities on the edge of the gaza strip, israeli communities, in which hundreds and hundreds, 1400 people were killed in the most barbaric way. This was the most devastating attack on the state of israel in all of its history. It was the worst attack on jews of its history. It was the worst attack onjews since the holocaust. So not surprisingly a wall was utterly inevitable. Hamas, it is also worth reminding viewers, has never recognised israels right to exist. But you also have to understand the reality of life in gaza itself. It is overcrowded, it is impoverished, it is a place where generations of young people have grown up with no prospects of any kind of meaningful future, grown up with no prospects of any kind of meaningfulfuture, cut grown up with no prospects of any kind of meaningful future, cut off from the outside world, under a complete is ready economic siege, and frequently subjected to death at the hands of the israeli military. I was there in 2014, in 2018, i found a generation of young palestinians in the grips of a Mental Health crisis and with an honest suicidal desire to hurl themselves against israels Security Fence around the gaza strip. None of that quite explains the savagery of what happened just over two weeks ago in those communities around the gaza strip. But i think most people who know anything about gaza would say some kind of explosion on a bigger scale than anyone had previously anticipated was always likely. Adam, thank ou. Anticipated was always likely. Adam, thank you. Frankly, anticipated was always likely. Adam, thank you. Frankly, i anticipated was always likely. Adam, thank you. Frankly, i know anticipated was always likely. Adam, thank you. Frankly, i know you anticipated was always likely. Adam, thank you. Frankly, i know you have | thank you. Frankly, i know you have thoughts of this and i also want to put a question from sam who asks. Do western governments have a red line for israel in this conflict . Following on from what paul said there following on from what paul said there is following on from what paul said there is the long term and the short term israet there is the long term and the short term israel clearly wants to destroy hamas term israel clearly wants to destroy hamas and term israel clearly wants to destroy hamas and destroy its capability. And a hamas and destroy its capability. And a un hamas and destroy its capability. And a un aid agencies are saying we need a and a un aid agencies are saying we need a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons need a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. Caroline similarly asks, regarding israels Blockade Of Gaza over the last two weeks, holding back fuel, electricity and water does this mean that there is literally no water, fuel and electricity available to the people of gaza, or do the gazans also have their own sources . Well, yes, gaza is for the palestinians but you have to remember that it is isolated from the outside world. Israel has controlled pretty much everything that goes in and out of gaza apart from a narrow strip along the egyptian border since 2007 when it imposed a really tight blockade after hamas took over the government in gaza. As a result of that Blockade Fuel is tightly controlled, goodis Blockade Fuel is tightly controlled, good is going in and out of gaza are incredibly tightly controlled. There is a Power Station in the gaza strip but it relies on fuel from outside, so when israel cut off the fuel completely over two weeks ago, the fuel started to run out quickly. The un now says it has may be another day or two left of fuel to run hospital generators, to power the trucks that need to take aid to where it is needed. Water is another key problem. Israel controls some of the water for the gaza strip and it turned that up off more than two weeks ago. The rest of the water comes from an aquifer underneath the gaza strip which is not good quality at all. It is very say line, it requires a lot of treatment to make it remotely drinkable, and that requires Desalination Plants and those require electricity and fuel to operate. And so those have also started to break down. So at the moment we are seeing the un having to bring in water among the badly needed supplies. Yes, gaza is in theory under palestinian control, but the reality of life in gaza is that israel essentially has a complete grip, and ability to turn the tap on and off pretty much at will. ~ the tap on and off pretty much at will. ,. , ~ ,. ,. , will.
