And Arsenal Stay In Touch at the top in the wsl, with victory in the North London Derby at the emirates. Also coming up on sportsday. Jemma reekie looks to put the finishing gloss on gbs world indoors campaign with gold in the 800 metres later. Hello there and welcome along to sportsday. It was always going to be tough for Manchester United against their now dominant rivals, Manchester City, in todays derby. A Marcus RashfordWonder Strike had them daring to dream going into half time, as city missed a string of chances. But pep guardiolas side were on the money in the second half, with a superb strike from phil foden firing them into gear. Joe wilson reports. A star Centre Forward walked out to play. Well, between the two manchesters, there are other strikers. United took the direct route towards citys goal. Whatever point he had to prove, Marcus Rashford channelled into this shot. Rashford has ripped it in do not question my commitment. Eighth minute message delivered. One of those perfect finishes the goalkeeper sees, but still cant reach. For city, Erling Haaland was always looming. Theyjust had to find him. He was so close, he had to score. Seriously. He didnt. The managers reaction was unmissable. Second half, city possession. Phil foden might have remembered rashfords shot. He matched it with this. Same place in the net, more or less. There was time and space to win. Foden again. Right now, in manchester and in england, is there a better finisher . Well, were we really forgetting haaland . He had his chance in injury time, and he didnt miss it. So, a huge week ahead for city in the title race, with pep guardiolas side taking on League Leaders liverpool next weekend in a top of the table clash. The manager was full of praise for their match winner, phil foden, today. He is the best player right now in the Premier League, with the amount of things he does, he is unbelievable. I think he loves to play football, he lives for football, with training sessions and playing games. It is a joy, and of course his work ethic is unbelievable. Two, iwould say, defining moments, when we almost made a breakthrough. We conceded the first goal, also the second goal was a defining moment. Then you are disappointed. We have to accept it, but it is what it is. But still, i think we had the opportunity to at least get one point, but also the win was possible. Burnley s awful run in the Premier League continued their hopes of survival come the end of the season seeming more unlikely as the weeks go by. They were beaten 2 0 at home by bournemouth in the days early game. Justin kluivert scored in the first half to put burnley on the way to another home loss. Burnley have never lost this many Home League Games in a single season. Antoine semenyo made the game safe late in the second, meaning vincent kompany s side are yet to win this year, and are second from bottom still 11 points from safety with 11 games remaining. What do i want from my team . I want the team to show the energy that they did today, to show that they are willing to fight and do everything for what is a wonderful opportunity, being in the Premier League with burnley. Thats it. In the end, winning, losing, ive been in the game long enough to know that you are not always in control of that final ball to put it in the back of the net, and you have got to rely on your players to turn the corner. Thats really important. We were in a good moment, i think we were playing well lately but not getting the wins. Probably we need a game like this, where probably we didnt play so well. But you know how to win it, you finish with a clean sheet. I think it will give us some confidence for the next games, so very important for us. So, lets take a look at how things stand in the table. At the top, Manchester City close the gap to liverpool to just a point, with arsenal still to play tomorrow against the leagues bottom side, sheffield united. Man united stay sixth, their chase for a top four spot taking a blow. At the bottom, its looking grim for burnley, only off the bottom courtesy of Goal Difference to sheffield united. Bournemouth now three points clear of Crystal Palace in 13th. Celtic lost 2 0 at hearts, as the Scottish Premiership title race took another twist. The game was punctuated by several incidents that needed var intervention, as third placed hearts secured back to back wins over celtic for the first time in 18 years. Its also the first time in six years that both celtic and rangers have have suffered League Defeats on the same weekend. Adam cottier reports. Following rangers Surprise Home defeat to motherwell on saturday, celtic had the opportunity to reassert their authority in the title race. And a foul by hearts presented the defending champions with an early chance to take the lead, but a miss from the spot. Moments later, a celtic player was sent off after a var check, leaving his manager, brendan rodgers, gazing at an uncomfortable afternoon in edinburgh. A handball saw hearts awarded a penalty and jorge grant put the home team 1 0 up. Heartss Lawrence Shankland was the leagues leading goalscorer, and he wasnt to be denied after the break. Hearts goalkeeper continued to close the door at the other end, with celtic letting rangers off the hook, with a loss leaving them two points behind their glasgow neighbours. Arsenal kept pace in the Womens Super League title race with a 1 0 win over spurs. Alessio russo bagged the only goal in the North London Derby to ensure arsenal stayed three points behind leaders Manchester City. Beth mead got the assist, and is the first player in wsl history to rack up a0 assists at one club. Spurs are a top side and they play some top football. We knew it was going to be tough. Coming off the back of international break, we knew we had to get to work quickly, and we wanted to make everyone proud, especially at the emirates. It was tough, but the important thing is the three points. We just need to improve a little bit more to make sure we are sharp in some situations. I want to win, i definitely want to win, but i also understand arsenal away is one of the most difficult games you can have. We competed for 97 minutes and pushed them down, thats what i want to see right now. We are taking steps right now, and in the long end we are going to be able to win these games. Big wins in the other matches today brighton put seven past bristol city, the leagues bottom side. A good win for liverpool too, 4 1 away at aston villa. West ham drew with 4th placed Manchester United. And Chelsea Look Set to go back to the top of the table, theyre beating leicester 4 0 in the late game. You can watch highlights of the weekend action on the womens football show tonight at 23 30 on bbc one and on iplayer. In America Lionel messi and luis suarez scored two goals each to take inter miami to the top of the standings in major league soccer. It was a thumping win over local rivals orlando city, suarez started off the scoring afterjust three minutes. The uruguayan might be 37, but he hasnt lost his ability to finish. Suarez got a second, before messis two goals rounded off a 5 0 win. The last one was set up by suarez as he did many times before when the two played together at barcelona. So difficult to start again because i change my form, how i play. And i think he knows everything about myself, and i think we continue for the club, continuing is most important for us. In contrast to florida these were the extraordinary scenes at Real Salt Lake city, in utah. Heavy snow disrupted the home sides 3 0 win over los angeles fc. The visiting manager called playing in the conditions an absolute joke. The weather caused a two hour delay and play was also suspended shortly after kick off because of lightning. The curtain comes down on the World Athletics Indoor Championships tonight and there could be more success for britain later on, Withjemma Reekie among the names in the frame for a gold on the track no doubt spurred on by the home crowd in glasgow. Jeanette kwakye is there for us, with commentator steve cram. Steve cram, its been a busy weekend here in glasgow and the action is still thick and fast. Potential some World Records tonight maybe . We have got a couple of chances. The world record in the 60 hurdles has already been broken. That 60 hurdles, im not sure shes as red hot favourite as she should be from this morning, maybe needs to step up a bit. In the pole vault, more World Records also, so i think that is going to be great. Hopefully this crowd, like last night, might have something to cheer from a british perspective. Absolutely, a british and scottish perspective. Jemma reekie was in sensational form yesterday. We could see Something Special tonight. When we came here, everybody was looking everybody was looking at the ethiopian, when we came here, everybody was looking at the ethiopian, alemu, at the top of the rankings. Jemma reekie has beaten her eight times out of eight, so i was fairly confident. She is in the form of her life, very confident, home crowd, great opportunity for her. If she wins, she needs to be on top of her game, but she has got every chance. Withjemma, what do you think the main difference has been for her . She obviously split from her previous coach and set a new regime, and is now doing her own thing. I think thats a big thing for athletes. This is her plan, hertraining regime. She is very settled where she is. She is a happy athlete, and happy athletes make good athletes. It could potentially be three gold medals for great britain. Would you see that as a success for this team . I think that would be phenomenal. I wouldnt write off the 4x4 relay for the women either. I think three, four medals would be brilliant. With a small team, i think thats a good place to be. With two, three of our top people not here, as well. I think whatever happens tonight, it has been a good championships. Lebronjames has become the first player in the nba to score 40,000 career points. This is the moment he reached the milestone against the denver nuggets. The crowd gave james a Standing Ovation during a timeout, and the ball he used to score that historic point was removed from the game. He described it as bittersweet after his team, the la lakers, lost to the defending nba champions. Im never thinking about a milestone when im up there battling. But when it happens, obviously we acknowledge it. Obviously, much respect and loyalty to the lakers fan base for showing me their love during the timeout. Being the first player to do something is pretty cool in this league, because of its history and some of the greats that have come through the league. For me, the main thing is always to win, and i hate that it had to happen in a defeat. Thats it from sportsday. Butjust before we go, a word about wolves because six days before the start of the season, the club were without a manager afterJulen Lopetegui left. Gary oneill replaced him and youd perhaps forgive fans for feeling less than optimistic. But full credit to him. Seven months later, the Midlands Side are chasing european football, and can boast wins over Manchester City, spurs and chelsea. Heres ben croucher with an edition of the football news show, which was recorded on tuesday, taking a deep dive into the oneil impact at wolves. Gary oneill has been announced as the new manager of wolves. I wolves have come to Goodison Park and have won. What a noise in wolverhampton wolves 2, Manchester City i. Unbelievable ending spurs are out on their feet still pedro neto, he has found the net Derby Delight for the side from the black country. A hat trick, a victory for wolves, a first one at Stamford Bridge in 45 years. It finishes wolves 1, i Manchester United 0. Who saw this coming . A summer spent selling their best players, the Manager Walking out four days before the start of the season. But wolves have dug their claws in and remarkably are outsiders for europe. We are going to find out more about the man behind this unlikely turnaround, gary oneill. He has taken wolves to ninth in the Premier League at the time of recording, an improvement on the last couple of years. With 11 wins this season, that is as many as they manage all of the last campaign. They have been prolific in front of goal. They are up to a0 already, better than they have managed at this stage since their return to the top flight. Lets chat to charlotte dunker, the times football reporter. Remind us where we were in the summer with wolves. Things went very wrong for wolves on the eve of the season. Just four days before the start of the new season, it was announced that Julen Lopetegui was leaving the club. He was unhappy with the lack of spending, and they were worried that his negative morale was going to affect the team. Gary oneill was brought in. I dont think they would have been the same as they are now under gary oneill. I think the players have really bought into what the manager wants to do. They really like him as a man manager. If you look at the players he has improved hwang hee chan. Lamina. They are now key parts of this wolves side. Gary oneil has improved them on an individual basis, and i think that is testament to the sort of man manager he is. The players and everyone at the club just feel a lot more connected to gary oneill than they did toJulen Lopetegui. Lets find out more about that connection. What is it like being a wolves fan at the minute . It reminds me back to the nuno era. It was a really, really exciting time. I think the wolves fans almost got a bit entitled. Gary oneill came in and he wasnt the fans choice. He has really, really turned it around, there is a massive belief there, not only amongst the support base, but with the squad as well. You can see that with how he has transformed some of the players. Lets talk about europe, maybe not that far fetched. Charlotte, are the club genuinely thinking about europe or not . I think every time we have asked gary oneill about it at a Press Conference he has tried his very best to play it down. He has said that the fans can dream of europe, but inside it is not something that they are talking about. I had an interview with one of the players, and he said the same thing. When we were verging on europe last time, it does get so exciting. You can almost feel it now. But you dont want to jinx it. We have had a remarkable season. Us wolves fans at the start of the season, if we had been offered 16th, we probably would have took it, especially on the eve of the season. But im sure gary oneill is not putting that message out to the players. We certainly do not feel it as supporters. It is almost dangerous to have these expectation levels. I dont think he should be under any pressure at all, he has already had a remarkable season. Im hoping we finish on a high. If we get to europe, our passports are ready. Charlotte and jason, thank you for your time. Lets find out more about gary oneill. Manager of the season, anybody . He has only been coaching since august 2020, but he impressed at bournemouth, keeping them up. At a0 he is the second youngest manager in the Premier League, behind vincent kompany. Lets see how his record stacks up against other wolves managers. Top of the pile. I am proud of the work that has been done, im proud of the players and how committed and hard working they have been and the quality they have managed to show. But, yeah, the good feeling and the momentum that we have created is not unbreakable and it is not perfect. There are still cracks in what we do and there are still opportunities for us to make mistakes, and we need to be constantly on guard and constantly ready to go full tilt. One man who knows how to go full tilt alongside gary oneill is former team mate stewart downing. Give us a sense of what he was like. A bit chirpy. He is a good lad. He was a big golf man at the time when i played with him. A really good team player, hard working. I knew what we were signing at middlesbrough. A really good player. Everybody seems to describe him as a man with meticulous attention to detail. Did you see that when he was a player . I know him personally because my Brother In Law worked with him at bournemouth, jonathan woodgate. I asked him about gary, and he said he is quite meticulous in what he wants. He studies other teams quite well. I think if he wants something done, he wants it done properly. He goes right into detail on the other teams. I watch him on sky a couple of weeks ago talking about systems and players. You can see he is right on it and he knows what he wants from his players. I think he has got real clarity on that. What do you think he can go on and achieve at his on and achieve at his managerial career . How high can he go . I think for gary it willjust be one job at a time. From now to the end of the season, there are still some big points to play for, it can easily slip away. I think for him he has just got to keep going, finish as high as he can. Just getting into the top half, that would be a tremendous season for them. Im sure he is thinking just one season at a time, one block, get the job done until the end of the season. Maybe getting some of his own players in. Thank you forjoining us is. Dont forget, you can head over to the wolves club page on the bbc sport website for more interviews, insights and reactions. Hope to see you again soon, bye bye. The weather was pretty decent for most of us on sunday, some sunshine and a few showers here and there.
