Its ten in the morning in singapore, and 5am in the Middle East where more israeli strikes have been reported in beirut after israel issued further Evacuation Orders in parts of Southern Lebanon. Were looking at pictures of a huge explosion in the last few hours. Now i want to take you to live pictures from the lebanese capital, beirut. On Saturday Night The City experienced one of its most intense bombardments so far in this conflict. Authorities say at least 25 people were Killed. On sunday the Israeli Military said it had Killed a senior hezbollah commander, although the group has not yet commented. The Israeli Military says its investigating why five rockets fired from Southern Lebanon on Sunday Night managed to penetrate Israels Air defences and explode in the northern Port City of haifa. Several people were injured. Meanwhile in Gaza Israeli attacks are continuing. The hamas run Health Ministry says 26 people were Killed in strikes on a mosque and a School Housing displaced palestinians. The idf says it believed hamas was Re Grouping in the area. And in southern israel, a 19 year old female sergeant with the israeli Border Police was Killed in a shooting. At least ten others were injured in what police have called a suspected terror attack. All of this comes as israel prepares to mark the one Year Anniversary of the October Seventh attacks by hamas and other palestinian armed groups in which around 1200 people were Killed and more than 250 taken hostage. 97 people are still being held captive. We begin our coverage with this report from our international editor, Jeremy Bowen who has travelled to kibuutz Kfar Azr, close to Israels Border with gaza. The survivors of the attack on Kibbuutz Kfar Asr have not come back to live here. The ruins have not been touched. Kfar azr on the border was one of the first targets of hamas. They Killed 62 people here. They took 19 into gaza as hostages. Buzzing that buzz is from an israeli drone heading to gaza. Later we heard Air Strikes. Bereaved families and a Grieving Nation were promised total victory over hamas by their Prime Minister. A year on, hamas are still fighting. The ground around one house has been excavated. The home of a man and his fiance, both Killed by hamas. His father spent weeks looking for his sons head, he did not find it. A neighbour said there was a nightmare on every corner. We are still inside the trauma. We are not in Post Trauma like people said. We are still here. We are still in the war. My victory, i will be here with my son and daughter, with my grandchild and living peacefully. For israelis, Kfar Azr and all the other places that hamas attacked, have become repositories of a deep and still raw national trauma and the horror that happenend here has, for the vast majority of israelis, absolutelyjustified everything that israel has done since then. A year ago, israeli troops were still fighting hamas when they led us into Kfar Azr three days after the attack. The year of war since then ripped away any illusion there could be peace without resolving conflicts. Hamas fighters lying where they were Killed was seen by israelis as enemies funded by iran to destroy their state. And the sight of dead israelis being carried out of the ruins brought back the Nazi Holocaust that Killed 6 millionjews. These soldiers were being deployed north to the border with lebanon. One year later, Israel And Iran are in direct conflict plummeting towards all out war. Israels Prime Minister netanyahu, promised a mighty vengeance. His Defence Minister said they were fighting Human Animals in gaza and would act accordingly. This was Gaza City before last october. Hamas told the bbc that they attacked israel to put palestinians back on the world agenda. Israel has damaged or destroyed nearly 60 of all gazas buildings according to satellite analysis. As the war in lebanon deepens, in beirut there are fears they may face something like this. Almost 42,000 palestinians, mostly civilians, have been Killed. 10,000 are missing, thought to be under the rubble. The estimate is that 40 of casualties are children. Israel insists it follows the laws of war, spares civilians and it rejects and condemns the accusation of genocide made by South Africa at the international court ofjustice. More than 2 Million gazans, the un says, are trapped in a humanitarian catastrophe without food, water or medical care. As families are displaced repeatedly on israels orders, bbc verify has tracked how quickly improvised camps spring up. Israelis say they protect civilians. The un says nowhere is safe. Israel does not allow journalists into gaza so trusted palestinian colleagues filmed in a supposedly safe area hit by at least 18 israeli airstrikes. She and her family have had to move 15 times. Translation we were walking on the street when a car was hit and we saw it burning. On the left there were people Killed. On right there were people Killed. Even the donkeys were thrown around in the bombing and we said that is it, we are done. The next rocket will be for us. On the West Bank, the other side of the palestinian territories, Violence And Killing have increased sharply. This isjenin where many israeli raids have neither deterred nor destroyed local armed palestinian militia. The cemetery is filling up with their dead. The war in gaza has radicalised both sides. The West Bank is already part of the part of serious Conflict Conflict in the Middle East, but could be a big explosion here if Israel And Iran continue to accelerate into all out war. The nightmare of the war that started in gaza, spreading and igniting the Middle East is happening. A Ceasefire Deal in gaza might just kill the crisis and create a space for diplomacy. Perhaps the war can end in gaza as well. Or perhaps it is too late for them. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, jerusalem. Amid fears that the conflict could turn into a wider regionalwar, reuters is also reporting that the commander of irans Quds Force who travelled to lebanon following the killing of hezbollah S Leader last month has not been heard from since israeli strikes hit beirut last week. We are showing you now live pictures of beirut and there is smoke there on the horizon. As attacks continue in parts of lebanon, heres our Middle East correspondent, hugo bachega. Overnight and the most intense israeli Air Strikes in this war. Explosion. In the morning, more Air Strikes. This video appears to capture secondary explosions, a possible sign that weapons were being stored there. This place was hit about 12 hours ago and theres still smoke coming out of the rubble. There is a heavy smell in the air and there is destruction all around including some buildings far from here. I can count at least three underground floors. Its all destroyed. Israel accuses hezbollah of hiding weapons among civilians, an Accusation Hezbollah denies. This building, residents told us, included a sweet shop. We found a bag with the name of the shop on the right, next to the Tail Fin of a mortar, unlikely to have been used by the Israeli Military. We couldnt stay long. A group of men arrived, ordering us to leave. In gaza, Israels War against hamas continues. Israel bombed another School Housing displaced residents, saying hamas set up a Control Centre in the building. A nearby mosque was also attacked. Israel said hamas was operating there. The two strikes Killed at least 26 people, according to gazas Health Ministry. This woman lost her daughter and grandchildren. Translation please god, defeat netanyahu. Please god, defeat israel. I hope god defeats you, america. You have made us cry over our children, grandchildren, and loved ones. My heart is breaking. Back in lebanon, the missiles come, not only at night. Israel is not backing down in its war against hezbollah. In beirut theres no respite. Hugo bachega, bbc news, beirut. Sir Keir Starmer s Chief Of Staff has resigned from the post, saying she risked becoming a distraction. Sue Grays Resignation follows rows about her salary, and controversy surrounding donations to the uk Prime Minister and members of the cabinet. Downing street says she will take up a new role as the Pms Envoy for nations and regions. The conservatives said her resignation showed the government is in chaos. Heres our political editor, Chris Mason by the prime Ministers Side until today, at least. Sue gray was at the top table. Here she was at the White House last month. Now she has gone as the Chief Of Staff, after weeks of her colleagues saying she was too powerful and not up to thejob. And willing to leak confidential information about her. She earns £170,000 a year but that figure matters less than about how i found out about it. And that is down to rows in government about her role. Some within government thought the leak was deeply unfair but the anger was real, an issue i put to the Prime Minister one week before last. Will you get rid of those grumblers or get rid of her . I am not going to discuss individual members of staff, whoever they are. What about resolving the issues that brought about the row . Do you acknowledge that those people are unhappy and i guess as the boss, you have the responsibility to sort that out. I acknowledge the briefings to you are not helpful to the government. My focus is on what we need to do as the government to change the country for the better. And it is myjob to deal with briefings and Et Cetera and i take responsibility for that. In a statement today, Sue Gray said that in recent weeks it has become clear to me that intense commentary around my position risked coming a distraction to the governments vital work of change. Before moving to work for labour last year, Sue Gray had spent a career as a Civil Servant Including Writing The Report Into Parties during the pandemic when borisjohnson was Prime Minister. It is really hard to drive Party Politics from the centre of the government if you have not come up through Party Politics. I worked with sue and i rate sue but i think you see now the need for political professionals to be the Driving Force in communications, Policy And Everything that is done. This is the man who will replace her. Morgan mcsweeney, widely credited as the mastermind behind the landslide election win. Sir Keir Starmer will hope this will bring the Backbiting And Infighting in the government to an end. Our political editor, Chris Mason, reporting. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. 973 migrants crossed the English Channel on saturday the highest daily total so far this year. 4 people including a child died while attempting the crossing. According to Home Office figures, more than 26,000 people have made thejourney in more than 500 boats since the start of the year. Thats now higher than at the same point last year. A new multimillion Pound Research Programme has been launched into why immunotherapy fails to benefit more than half of patients who receive it. The revolutionary treatment uses the bodys own Immune System to fight cancer. But many patients suffer a relapse, or significant side effects. Academic institutions, nhs trusts and health boards, alongside Bio Science and tech firms, are now going to investigate why. Bbc radio presenter, johnnie walker, says he is stepping back from the microphone because of ill health. The 79 year old, who has pulmonary fibrosis, will present his final sounds of the 70s and the Rock Show on Radio 2 at The End of this month. Youre live with bbc news. Its just ten days since Storm Helene tore through the South Eastern united states. Now another storm looks likely to strike again this week, in florida milton. The storm is currently off the coast of mexico. Its now classed as a category one hurricane, having been upgraded from a tropical storm on sunday. Were looking at pictures showing just how enormous its become over the past 2a hours. The us national Weather Service says its expecting the storm to strengthen further as it tracks eastward towards florida. It could grow to a category four before diminishing to a category three when it makes landfall on wednesday. Here were looking at at the precipitation forecast its further inundation for a state thats just digging out from helene. The states governor, ron desantis, has already issued an emergency warning. He says preparations are under way to restore power and clear roads damaged by helene, ahead of miltons arrival. As that cleanup from Hurricane Helene continues in the us, the nations top Disaster Relief Official says misinformation is making that work harder. Rumours spread online claim the White House is cutting off aid to republican voting communities. That claim was recently amplified by Donald Trump himself including in a social Media Post where he claimed the biden administration was, quote, going out of their way to not help people in republican areas. One republican congresswoman, marjorie taylor greene, went further, tweeting that, quote, they can control the weather. Now deanne criswell, director of the federal emergency management agency, or fema, is hitting back. Here she is on abc newss this week with George Stephanopoulos take a listen. It is frankly ridiculous and just plain false. This kind of rhetoric is unhelpful to people. It is a shame that we are putting politics ahead of helping people and that is what we are here to do. We have had the complete support of the state. We have had the local officials helping to push back on this dangerous, truly dangerous narrative that is creating this fear of trying to reach out and help us or register for help. People need resources and we need them to get into the system. Will oremus is Technology Reporter at the washington post. I asked him whether this type of disinformation is new. Have you been surprised . Is this a new type of disinformation that we need to be aware of . Nothing about this is new, it isjust worse than in the past. When we talk to experts on disasters they say that misinformation always flourishes in the chaos after a horrible natural disaster like the aftermath of the hurricane in the South Eastern united states. What is different is the volume of it and the rapidity of the spread and the fact that it has become so prevalent that a lot of the people trying to respond to the disaster and help people there are having to spend part of their time just debunking the falsehoods out there that are misleading people into taking wrong actions to save their life. I wanted to ask how this is impacting the relief effort. What do we hear from people on the ground . There have been so many false rumours swirling and many of them have real world consequences. We spoke to a person who had seen a Hoax Article claiming that there was another hurricane about to hit her area and she said she had an Anxiety Attack as she was trying to evacuate. And that was not true. There was no second hurricane imminent. We spoke to people who believed that there were federal officials seizing a Town North of carolina that there was a conspiracy to seize the town and bulldoze the bodies and hide them, to may be mine it for lithium. None of that was true but the first responders on the ground are now facing Suspicion And Hostility from people who think that they are there to steal their land and property. And there has been a lot of rumours about the idea that the federal agency in charge of responding, fema, has run out of money. Many republicans have spread the idea that it is because they spent all the money helping migrants and now cannot help american citizens who are affected by the disaster. According to fema that deters people from asking for assistance when there is money and resources out there to help them. And i wanted to ask you are there fears that this could be replicated with milton and what can be done in order to try and solve it . It is a difficult scenario. We have a world where Social Media is replacing Mainstream Media as a primary source of news for many people and there are many wonderful things about Social Media including people able to broadcast what is happening on the ground what they are eyewitnesses to but one of the problems is that no one checks the facts and there have been studies that show that false hoods and lies spread faster and further on Social Media than the debunkings of those false hoods and lies undertakes a long time to do the debunking. And we have a trend among american Social Media companies where they have been deterred from doing this sort of Content Moderation that they used to try to do. They have been accused of censoring peoples voices and so they pulled back, particularly x under elon musk. He bought twitter because he felt that they were doing too much censorship, Content Moderation and fact checking so x has been one of the primary places now where false rumours are swirling and that is critical because even though most people are not on x it is a place where public agencies and first responders go to try and communicate to the public in a quick way during emergencies. Lets take a look at some other stories in the headlines. Election officials in Tunisia Sayjust over a quarter of eligible voters cast their ballots in Sundays President ial election. It appears to have been won by the incumbent, kais saied. He has assumed almost complete control of the country over the past five years. The president ial ballot had been seen as a formality, as many of mr saieds opponents had beenjailed or disqualified, and the Election Commission stripped of many of its powers. China says two of its citizens have been Killed in pakistan in what it called a Terrorist Attack near karachi international airport. A statement by the chinese embassy said there were also many pakistani casualties. The separatist Balochistan Liberation Army which has in recent years carried out attacks on chinese nationals involved in projects has claimed responsibility for the attack. The overall Death Toll is as yet unclear. Lets go back now to the Middle East, where fighting has been continuing across lebanon, gaza and in israel, one year since the October 7th attacks. Earlier, i spoke to randa slim, senior Fellow And Director of Conflict Resolution at the Middle East institute, and asked if she the speed of the escalation in the region was a shock to her yes. I am surprised by how quickly this escalated and i think the Turning Point was the assassination of the hezbollah leader. I think since then a rubicon has been crossed on both sides, for the israelis and for hezbollah. I think the israelis now are more focused on the objective which, in my opinion will be very hard to achieve, if not impossible, of decimating Hezbollah And Hezbollah is now going back to its mission of resistance. It has been decapitated, yes, it has been weakened, yes but the invasion of Southern Lebanon by israel has given it a lifeline and a new mission and it is taking people behind it. Of course, we saw the israeli has hezbollah war in 2006. Arguably now israels capacities are greater and its intelligence. What can both sides learn from the previous conflict and what might this Conflict Look as a result of that experience . It is going to be bloodier, i think. Israel has said it is going to be a limited operation but if you follow the Evacuation Orders that are being issued by the israeli army on a daily basis in terms of how many villages in Southern Lebanon have to be evacuated, you get the impression, you definitely get that it is not going to be that because these villages are well beyond the line were supposedly according to the Security Council Resolution with Need Hezbollah to withdraw to. That is one lesson, i think. It is going to be bloodier. The israel it has to do underground warfare of hezbollah s weapons are stored in underground tunnels. Both sides, Hezbollah And Israel have prepared for this war. Israel said they learn from the lessons of 2006 and have prepared for this war. Hezbollah has also prepared for this war. They have been Storing Weapons and developing weapons, getting capacity in terms of precision guided missiles. They havent used them yet, they still use the rocket but we dont know if they will use them in the future. The lesson to be learned is that it will be bloodier and, like in the past, parties start by saying it will be limited, like israel are saying but eventually the Dynamics Takeover and they start getting entangled more and more in the fight and the terrain. The terrain favours the defender it does not favour the attacker although as i said israel has prepared for it, still, the terrain in South Lebanon is difficult to navigate and that will favour hezbollah.
