Her Son And Daughter were kidnapped by hamas and held for 52 days Before they were released in a truce deal. But she says they are still living the nightmare of the 7th Of October. Her Ex Husband is one of dozens of hostages stuck in gaza. Last seen alive in a tunnel by his daughter. We know that every moment his life is. Can be gone. 0ur Life is on hold. We cant think. About future, we cant think about nothing else. Last years shocking assault triggered the deadliest ever war against palestinians. With relentless israeli bombardment. Most of Gazas Population forced from their homes. A humanitarian catastrophe. And every day brings new casualties. Last month an israeli Air Strike hit the Younis Family home, killing a six year old and his grandmother. Translation i want to know why. We are civilians, we pose no threat. Now in hospital, ahmed tries to cheer his surviving children with memories of happier days. They have lost all they owned and they are in constant pain. Translation i want my children and my wife to be treated. If i could, i would take them abroad. There is no safety. I hope from god that the war stops today Before tomorrow. Instead, the fighting is now spreading in the Middle East, and that leaves many palestinians and israelis desperately worried that World Attention is shifting away from their suffering. Shortly after that, i said, we are in a war. Not an operation. We will fight back with the force the enemy has never known. We are at war and we will win it. Since that black day, we have been fighting. This is a warfor our day, we have been fighting. This is a war for our existence was of the war of resurrection. I this is how i would like to officially call the war. We are changing the Security Reality of our region for the sake of our children, for the sake of our children, for the sake of ourfuture, and to our children, for the sake of our future, and to ensure what happened on october seven will not happen again. Hamas lit up very quickly we realised that this is one of the biggest, may be attacked by hamas into the israeli territory and the retaliation will be huge from the israeli side and it was just, will be huge from the israeli side and it wasjust, like, 2a hours when israel started to buildings and towers in gaza, but what happened following the 7th Of October is a catastrophe for the palestinians. Ive been talking to many people since early in the morning and last night. Those who have access to the internet were posting on Social Media saying that it is a year of sadness, a year of displacement, a year of killing but 42,000 people were killed according to the hamas run Health Ministry and about 10,000 are still missing under collapsed buildings but, more important, two thirds of the population are displaced in an area in Southern Gaza and those who even survived and left gaza are suffering because they became refugees in egypt and other countries. find became refugees in egypt and other countries. Yes, it was, like, the 12 October when israel issued general Evacuation Order to about1 million people in gaza and me and my family were among those, about A Million people who left Gaza City and the north to the south and we were stuck in one area, from the hospital, living in the hospital, living in the hospital, in a tent, with my family. Untilwe hospital, in a tent, with my family. Until we got the chance in november, to leave gaza. But be left behind ourfamily, my father was still living in gaza. I mean, there is too many| mean, there is too many different figures, over100 journalists were killed in gaza since the war and this is equal, the number of palestinian journalists killed since 1967. They were killed in one year. And i cant remember, in modern history, the conflict were 100 journalists were killed and we have journalists who are injured in some of them are treated outside but they still suffer, you know. And theirfamily still suffer, you know. And their family are still in gaza. Thank you for being with your on the programme. Lets turn to that piece. Panoramas Jane Corbyn has been following two families affected from this conflict. One in israel, and one in gaza. Both living in the aftermath of the attacks, and the war that followed. A year ago, Doron Katz Asher and her two daughters, raz and aviv, were staying at her Mothers House in niroz kibbutz. They were all taken hostage by hamas. Doron kept a diary while she was held in gaza. She wrote to her husband, yoni, about how much they were missing him. The moment the family was taken hostage was filmed by hamas and seen by yoni. Saw my wife, some of the hamas men puts a cover on her head. I saw my girl raz, purple dress, long golden hair. As they were taken into gaza, an israeli helicopter was firing above them. Doron s mother was killed. What do you think when you hear that . They were shot by their own side. Its hard to discover that at The Moment Of Truth and such horrifying moment, the danger was from the idf helicopter. We need to tell ourselves the truth. And the truth is that in that day, all bets were off. It was chaos. Yeah, it was a chaos and all bets were off. After 50 days in captivity, she and her children were released and returned to israel. Every day i look at them and i know that its a miracle that they are here. The un estimates that at least 14 people were killed in Friendly Fire on october the 7th. In gaza too, life changed completely on that day. When this war started, her age was 11 months. Shes turning two years very soon. On october the 7th, shuruq was living in Gaza City with her husband Roshdi Sarraj as they came under israeli bombardment. Roshdi, a film maker, started documenting life under siege. Its very close. Its unbelievable. Theyjust attack again and again, over and over. Huge Air Strike around the whole area now. The next morning, an israeli strike hit the building. Roshdi was killed. Shes really young to comprehend, what does it mean to lose a dear father . He would be always my best friend. Since then, shuruq has moved four times. Shes now living in a camp in central gaza. There is no light by The End of this deep tunnel. They destroyed the buildings and also the near future of the gazan people. It will be a memorial Day Notjust as israelis but i hope around the globe because it was a global event with many nations involved. Global event with many nations involved. ,. , involved. We went in and out of different places and at one point, we had huge Fire Fighting and a very small compound where i got blown up by a grenade and as i landed on the ground i was shot several times in my legs. And i rushed into the hospital, basically, they declared me dead but i was able to miraculously survive this and over a period of seven days they kept me alive and here i Am Today. It was only when you got to the hospital that, somehow, they managed to actually say you. How long did you end up staying in hospital . Actually, Left The Hospital two days Before my arrival to the uk which is at the toba second. I have been there for 11 months. And, yeah, at the beginning it was a very traumatic experience. Almost 24 7. It is gradually getting better but i will be disabled for the rest of my life but i manage. fit. For the rest of my life but i manage manage. A couple of final questions manage. A couple of final questions. Because i manage. A couple of final questions. Because you i manage. A couple of final i questions. Because you talked about fighting, trying to get to the hostages. In terms of how is real is, a year on, how much does that weigh on people . Thats still so many hostages remain trapped. Tremendously ut remain trapped. Tremendously ut u remain trapped. Tremendously put up this remain trapped. Tremendously put up this is remain trapped. Tremendously put up this is the remain trapped. Tremendously put up this is the biggest i remain trapped. Tremendously put up this is the biggest pain | put up this is the biggest pain that we have a lot of i think that we have a lot of i think that if there were no hostages this web would look completely different. But, for us, as a nation, that Sea Life as the most sacred thing. It is just showing you how other people are sensitive to it but then again, ithink are sensitive to it but then again, i think that during the past year we lost something thatis past year we lost something that is very new. That our people can last for very long time if we have this joint purpose that we see that it is very important and the hostages are keeping us fighting until The End of our breath, until we get them out. So The End of our breath, until we get them out get them out. So you dont think there get them out. So you dont think there will get them out. So you dont think there will be get them out. So you dont think there will be any i get them out. So you dont i think there will be any chance of a ceasefire until those hostages have already returned . Is that what you are saying . I think that the hostages are one of the goals of this war. We want our citizens a life not just because the hostages lives, which are a girl of its own, but for the future. For the future of my kids to be free in israel. Not to go to a party and to think that they will be kidnaps and they will be raped and they will be shot. So, for that sake, it is also something that we will keep fighting on. But again it is a war about our security. It got nothing to do with iran and you can give some examples of what we have something to do with hezbollah but why all of this is happening right now, you know. So this is a White Rabbit existence, for our freedom. Know. So this is a White Rabbit existence, for ourfreedom. We existence, for our freedom. We have to leave existence, for our freedom. We have to leave it there but thank you for coming in to talk to us here. Make this as a warfor our to us here. Make this as a war for our existence. Make this as a war for our existence. Joining me now is jan egeland, Secretary General of the norwegian Refugee Council. Welcome you to the programme. Welcome you to the programme. We spoken many times do the course of the last 12 months. What are your reflections on a day like today . It what are your reflections on a day like today . Day like today . It brings back the most painful day like today . It brings back the most painful memories I Day like today . It brings back| the most painful memories of day like today . It brings back. The most painful memories of a day of horror in israel where people were, like you just heard, getting killed in a senseless, horrific way. Sheer terror. Against civilians. That indiscriminate attack has been followed by an indiscriminate Military Campaign in gaza which is a very small area where 2 Million people are crammed together with no escape. And with a bombardment that has killed thousands of children. Thousands of children. More Aid Workers than in any other war anywhere on the planet. An indiscriminate day of terror was followed by an indiscriminate war in the war seems to be incapable of stopping, this bloodbath. I will come back to those wider thoughts in a Moment Butjust described, because you are a veteran of so many different humanitarian operations. The scale of what you have had to deal with here, this time around. Deal with here, this time around deal with here, this time around. ~ ,. , around. Well, the point is that it is very concentrated, around. Well, the point is that it is very concentrated, this i it is very concentrated, this place of horror. First in the two are three places where hamas and other islamic terrorists went rampaging and is real. And then on little gaza. I mean, gathera smaller than the municipality of osterloh, where i live. In that place, then, we have seen two thirds, more than two thirds of every civilian home either fully or partially destroyed. It is unimaginable, the destruction that has been there. With western provided bonds. Bonds. We humanitarian workers have not even been able to get in, even the Aid Trucks that are needed for our courageous Aid Workers that stood there and provided Relief Forehead be completely innocent women and children and families inside. I5 innocent women and children and families inside. Families inside. Is that fundamentally families inside. Is that l fundamentally different families inside. Is that i fundamentally different to other crises that so often you have dealt with . Other crises that so often you have dealt with . Yes. This lack of access have dealt with . Yes. This lack of access for have dealt with . Yes. This lack of access for aid, have dealt with . Yes. This lack of access for aid, for of access for aid, for journalists, and the ceiling of a territory. Well, we saw that also in the war in syria, that you had besieged areas for a very long time. And the western nations were outraged by the cruelty of this procedure amidst tactics. Much of the same here. Where can women and children escape from gaza . It really pains me as one who worked for israeli and palestinian reconciliation for so many years, to see this sterilisation of positions and lack of empathy as to what is happening on the innocent. On either side. Either side. You whenever israelis have either side. You whenever israelis have said either side. You whenever israelis have said about i either side. You whenever i israelis have said about who they have targeted at blaming hamas for using all of those civilians as Human Shields for double of those arguments. It away from that, in terms of the diplomacy, the lack of a ceasefire, is that, do you think, a fundamental failure of statecraft that we have seen . It is. And of leadership, on both sides, really. And it is a fundamental point that hamas and other armed groups in gaza, hezbollah and other armed groups in lebanon, yes, they do blend into the civilian population. I dont know if theyve used them as Human Shields but they are there in the population but that does, in no way, justify smashing the school full of women and children, if there are some hamas fighters somewhere in the Vicinity Or Right under the school. It is still a War Crime. It is a War Crime to blend into the civilian Court Population put up as a work to smash the school with everybody there. This is a fundamental point and it has been so misconstrued now for a year. It was indiscriminate warfare with indiscriminate bums, £2000 bombs, for example, provided by the united states. The united states. Final thought the united states. Final thought because, i the united states. Final thought because, of i the united states. Final thought because, of course, reversing a new phase of the conflict in lebanon. Indiscriminate bombs. I conflict in lebanon. Indiscriminate bombs. I fear a reputation indiscriminate bombs. I fear a reputation but indiscriminate bombs. I fear a reputation but it indiscriminate bombs. I fear a reputation but it can indiscriminate bombs. I fear a reputation but it can end i indiscriminate bombs. I fear a reputation but it can end in i reputation but it can end in Lebanon Tomorrow with some leadership, by the israeli side might the kerb side, it could from gaza and what i believe is that theres been overwhelming pressure from the outside world, these parties seem to be unwilling to end this bloodbath, unfortunately. Thank ou so bloodbath, unfortunately. Thank you so much bloodbath, unfortunately. Thank you so much for bloodbath, unfortunately. Thank you so much for being bloodbath, unfortunately. Thank you so much for being with i bloodbath, unfortunately. Thank you so much for being with us. | you so much for being with us. The Secretary General of the norwegian refugee talking to me live on Todays Programme where, of course, we are concentrating in reflecting the commemorations a year on from the october seven attacks. And also, try to keep right up to date with what is actually happening in the conflict in lebanon. Let Mejust Happening in the conflict in lebanon. Let me just tell you the latest in terms of that. The israeli army is saying that about 135 projectiles fired by hezbollah into Israel Today and we know that a number actually managed to get through in a variety of places but the israeli army are saying that 135 different projectiles were fired by Hezbollah Today into israel and we have seen more strikes by the israelis into different parts of Southern Lebanon and also beirut. We will have more on that aspect of what we are seeing from the Middle East here injust a moment. After a quiet weekend of whether the story is changing. More of an autumnal flavour to come across the uk over the next few days. Quite a showery story but it will be mired for the time of year. Stronger winds and a change of Wind Direction making it feel colder by The End of the week. For the year and now it is all about low pressure to the west and spiralling around as a series of frontal systems. Here is the most noticeable one. A South Westerly Flow Driving in a rush of showers means it will become more heavy and widespread as we go through the afternoon but if you dodge the showers a key, pleasantly one. 19 degrees not out of the question. By the early evening and into the Rush Hour we could see a line are pretty intense showers, some with Hail And Thunder mixed in their moving into the South West and wales towards the midlands and the north of england as we go through the night so first thing tomorrow morning, cloudy and wet for some but a
