Department of Education-Bicol Regional Director Gilbert Sadsad (PNA file photo) LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Education (DepEd) has directed schools division offices (SDOs) in the Bicol Region to adjust their learning modality and adopt modular distance learning during localized class suspensions due to the effect of the shear line and low pressure areas. In a statement on Thursday, Gilbert Sadsad, DepEd-5 regional director, said the directive is based on DepEd Order No. 37 or the guidelines on the cancellation and suspension of classes and work in schools in the event of natural disasters, power outages, power interruptions and other calamities. He said modular distance learning, performance task, projects, or other similar activities shall be implemented to ensure that learning competencies and objectives are met by students. Sadsad also instructed SDOs to distribute available self-learning modules (SLMs) to be used by schools when classes are suspended. "The issuance of additional guidelines on the adjustment of learning delivery during a suspension of classes is aimed at ensuring learning continuity and mitigating learning loss amid the series of cancellations of classes brought about by torrential rains and other weather disturbances in the region," he said. He also reminded schools to ensure that SLMs are properly used, cared for, safeguarded from natural and human elements, and recorded. "The SLMs are free for teachers and students and are intended to be used for at least 5 years. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every learner, teacher, and school head to exert effort to protect the learning resources from damage or loss to prolong its lifespan," he said. Meanwhile, in an advisory, the Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) warned the public of the so-called WILD diseases -- water-borne, influenza, leptospirosis and dengue -- as floods, and continuous rains are being experienced in the region. "To prevent the WILD diseases, do preventive measures like drinking clean water. If residents are unsure of the water's safety and potability, people should boil the water for two to three minutes," a DOH advisory said. Influenza is common during the rainy season due to virus proliferation. To prevent the spread of the virus, DOH-5 said those who are infected should cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze. It also advised frequent hand-washing to avoid the transfer of the virus and being vaccinated. Leptospirosis, on the other hand, is caused by the urine of infected rats and people with open wounds who wade in contaminated floodwaters are at risk. To prevent this, DOH-5 recommended the wearing of boots when in flooded areas. Dengue, meanwhile, can be prevented by the "4S" strategy which includes searching and destroy mosquito breeding places, self-protection, seeking early consultation during the early signs of dengue and saying no to indiscriminate fogging.
