Cannon salute marks Coast Guard's 'Changing of Command' ceremony at Fort Wadsworth

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Don't be alarmed if you hear cannon fire near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Friday morning.
The U.S. Coast Guard is holding a "Changing of Command" ceremony at Staten Island's Fort Wadsworth, which sits at the foot of the bridge, that will include a cannon salute.
Traffic on the span will not be impacted, the NYPD said.
The event is being held between 10:05 a.m. and 10:20 a.m.
During the ceremony, Capt. Zeita Merchant, who has served as deputy commander since May 2020, will relieve Capt. Jason Tama as commander of the Coast Guard's New York sector.
