Thousands of people will lay down blankets this week and watch Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's annual production in Boston Common, the heart of the city's sacred civic space.
This year's selection, following a year off because of the pandemic, is
The Tempest. The production stars John Douglas Thompson as Prospero, a powerful magician ruling over a tiny island.

A training seminar held this week by feminists and LGBT activists in a mining city in central Kazakhstan might have ended in violence but for the intervention of police.
A group of activist trainers traveled to Karaganda on July 28 for a day of talks billed as focusing on "the rights of women, as well as lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people." But as the event was due to get underway at a local business center, a group of furious locals gathered to demand its cancelation, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The $2.1 billion bill was passed by the Senate by a vote of 98-0. The House of Representatives, which had previously passed its own $1.9 billion bill, then promptly approved the Senate version by a vote of 416-11, clearing the way for President Joe Biden to sign it into law.

Having each suffered their own trauma, whether it was the gruesome loss of a lover, a horrific sexual assault or the malignant cancer eating away at one of their own, it’s ultimately their love for one another that keeps their dreams of becoming a singer, reconnecting with a child given away at birth or even just improving the reserve to forge stronger connections with the outside world firmly rooted to the ground.

Lakers Nearing Blockbuster Trade For Former MVP Russell Westbrook: Report

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and a 2021 first-round pick to Washington in exchange for the nine-time all-star.
Westbrook, 32, a Long Beach native, was a two-year standout at the UCLA before being selected No. 4 overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2008 NBA Draft.
The point guard would join his fourth team in four years after spending his first 11 seasons with the Thunder, before joining the Houston Rockets in 2019 and the Wizards in 2020.
Wojnarowski reports Washington is considering the trade in an attempt to create "some salary cap flexibility for the future to add talent around" all-star guard

EDITORIAL: Vote No on infrastructure (and reconciliation)

Second, if the bipartisan legislation fails, as it should, Democrats will be forced to jam all the real infrastructure items into their $3.5 trillion reconciliation effort - pushing up the price tag, and perhaps stalling the effort, which would be a good thing. Gridlock is the blessing of both Congressional branches being almost equally split between political parties.
Republicans must impede, not concede.
The amount in question is not small.  Spending on infrastructure and reconciliation would total $4.2 trillion over ten years.  The tax increases would need to add up to the same. That means that everyone – including the Republicans – who vote for the infrastructure deal are voting to increase the amount citizens pay to the federal government.  It doesn’t matter whether you call it taxes, or fees, or tariffs, or – our personal favorite – a carbon border adjustment mechanism, it is all transferring cash from individuals to the government.

EU Sets New Guidelines On Vaccines And Face Masks For Federal Employees

EU sets new guidelines on vaccines and face masks for federal employees
Reuters.- Federal workers and contractors
in situ They will have to show proof of vaccination against Covid-19 or wear face masks, practice social distancing and undergo regular tests, according to new guidelines announced Thursday by the White House.
The measures are the latest effort by US President Joel Biden to encourage some reluctant Americans to get vaccinated, as the Delta variant of the coronavirus is wreaking havoc especially among the unvaccinated.
Public employees who cannot prove they are vaccinated will be subjected to weekly or biweekly tests for Covid-19 and restrictions on official travel.

Congress moves to reclaim its war powers

Congress moves to reclaim its war powers
The Conversation

Whether this bill passes as is, or with significant changes, or not at all, its proposal signals an effort by lawmakers to reclaim power over military action and spending that Congress has gradually surrendered over decades. It also puts pressure on presidents to evaluate their foreign policy objectives more clearly, to determine whether military action is, in fact, appropriate and justified.
As I've demonstrated in my research, even though the 1973 War Powers Resolution attempted to constrain presidential power after the disasters of the Vietnam War, it contains many loopholes that presidents have exploited to act unilaterally. For example, it allows presidents to engage in military operations without congressional approval for up to 90 days.

Drought improvement in western Colorado

Recent rainfall is helping put a dent into the drought across western Colorado.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo — It's not going to cure the persistent drought across western Colorado, but it's certainly a start – thanks to a recent boost of monsoonal moisture that's mostly doused southwestern Colorado with several rounds of heavy rain.
The most recent update from the official United States Drought Monitor (USDM) showed noticeable improvements for parts of western Colorado, especially in the southwestern portion of the state.
While it's also led to periodic flash flooding – including mudslides around Telluride last week and near Redstone this week – it's also notably chipped away at one of the worst Colorado droughts in recent memory.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Thursday announced sweeping new pandemic requirements for millions of federal workers as he denounced an “American tragedy” of rising-yet-preventable deaths among unvaccinated U.S. employees and others.
Federal workers will be required to attest they’ve been vaccinated against the coronavirus or else face mandatory masking, weekly testing, distancing and other new rules. The newly strict guidelines are aimed at boosting sluggish vaccination rates among the four million of Americans who draw federal paychecks and to set an example for private employers around the country.

DHS recent hiring sprint shows promise, but lawmakers still see gaps in the federal cybersecurity workforce -- FCW

By Natalie Alms

The federal government continues to face challenges in recruiting a skilled cybersecurity workforce, amid heavy private sector demand and obstacles built into the hiring process, but there are some recent signs that longstanding efforts to improve the situation are starting to pay off.
At a Thursday hearing of the Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Innovation subcommittee of the House Homeland Security Committee, panel chairwoman Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) called attention to recent cybersecurity workforce "sprint" at the Department of Homeland Security.
"I want to commend Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas for making enhancing the cyber workforce the second of DHS's 60-days cyber sprint," she said. "By prioritizing this aggressive approach, Secretary Mayorkas has made meaningful progress in reducing significant cyber vacancies at the department while taking additional steps to address the shortage of cyber professionals nationally."
