North Carolina topped 1 million COVID-19 infections on Thursday since the start of the pandemic. At the same time, the state reported its lowest daily positive test rate. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported that a total of 1,000,416 North Carolinians had been infected with COVID-19. That's about 9.5% of the state's population. More than 13,000 people have died from the virus as of Thursday. The state also reported Thursday that only 2.8% of those being tested for the virus now are infected, which is the lowest rate during the pandemic. The bittersweet news comes as more than 50% of the state's population has received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, which has proven effective at preventing contracting the virus or getting seriously ill as a result. The improved vaccine and virus trends prompted North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper to lift most mask-wearing and social distancing requirements for those who have been vaccinated, following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The lift on mandates has prompted many unvaccinated Americans to roll up their sleeves for a shot, according to data from CNN.So far, 48.5% of adults in the state are fully vaccinated, according to NCDHHS. That still leaves more than half of the population at risk of developing the virus or becoming very sick. Dr. Christopher Ohl, an infectious disease expert at Wake Forest Baptist Health, said in a news conference Thursday that the best way for unvaccinated people to protect themselves from becoming infected with COVID-19 is to wear a mask.

The number of claims still waiting for California's Employment Development Department to act is continuing to grow. The expanding claims come after more than a year of delays, verification problems and fraud found in a series of KCRA 3 investigations.Currently, the department is separating out the number of people waiting stuck in a backlog of more than 21 days, and those the department says are waiting for certification by those claiming unemployment. As of Monday, the number of backlogged claims sits at nearly 122,000 claims. But the number waiting to be certified is more than 910,000 -- bringing the total number of claims in limbo over the million mark again. While the EDD says these are the claims waiting for Californians who filed to certify either their identity or to finish their paperwork, KCRA 3 Investigates continued to get emails and calls from people who say they cannot get through the ID verification system or to EDD itself. This comes after word that more issues with the EDD systems have prevented 178,000 people from filing new claims at the EDD.

Texarkana Resident Wins $1 Million In Mega Millions Drawing

Texarkana Resident Wins $1 Million In Mega Millions Drawing
What if you won $1million?!?! What would you do with it? All questions that can be answered by a Texarkana resident who claimed a second-tier Mega Millions prize worth $1 million for the drawing on March 24.
The ticket was purchased at Wend XX Inc., located at 3737 New Boston Road, in Texarkana. The winner chose to remain anonymous. (don't blame him or her). The winning ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers drawn (2-8-16-18-31), but not the Mega Ball number (14).
If you're like me, you'e thinking... 'Now how do I play this mega million again? Soooo.... basically it's played by choosing five numbers from a field of 70 and one Mega Ball number from the second field of 25 numbers. To win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all six numbers drawn including the Mega Ball.even if you match fewer numbers, you can still walk away a winner. Mega Millions offers a $20 million starting jackpot and a second-tier (Match 5+0) prize of $1 million. By choosing the Megaplier for $1 more per play, players can multiply their non-jackpot winnings by two, three, four or five times, winning as much as $5 million.
