If you were in Show Business you had to get on the Tonight Show. If you were a comic, you had to get on the Tonight Show and suc succeed, and it terrified them. He wielded a lot of nunes by virtue of all the things that you just said. Did he know he was going to be this hugely influential and make this kind of a mark . Not at all. In fact, when he started, he was extremely nervous about replacing Jack Pear because Jack Pear had become a national phenomenon. And a lot of people thought he was irreplaceable. But jonny replaced him so well, people forgot about pear. He had a 30 year run, naj all that hamd from the early 60s until the 90s. It was extraordinary. His ratings were spectacular. He made the most money in television. Avenues dominant dominant figure. Carson in his own rite laid the groundwork. There were other Bigname Km comedians to watched him and tried to follow in his footsteps. The best example is david letterman. He came out and did a Killer Set on the Jonny Carson show. He got called over to the guest which is a signal that jenny thought the guy was great. Jenny said if you want to put a show after me, thats the guy. He remained a fan of letterman after that. A man who was also involved in the accident got out of his car, saw the girl in the water and jumped in after her.
