Matt were going to head over to florida right now where the governor of florida is holding an update on Hurricane Helene as its making its way to the Gulf Coast and major general John Haas from the Florida National Guard as you know, as of 8 00 a. M. Hurricane helene is now a category two hurricane. It is located 365 miles south of apalachicola, is expected to speed up throughout the day and its expected to make landfall in Northern Florida for some time this evening maximum sustained winds are currently about 100 miles per hour. It is possible that this storm could make landfall as a major hurricane, as a category three or even potentially a category four, it is moving fast more rainfall is, of course expected. And it could lead to significant Storm Surge in our coastal areas. And so we are prepared for that. Of course. And well see what happens in terms of the intensification. I think that these things can rapidly intensify. Sometimes they become majors, sometimes theres changes. So were just going to continue to do our thing and assume that this is going to be a major hurricane when it makes landfall this is a very large storm, so youre going to see tropical weather thats going to extend hundreds of miles away from the center of the storm, doesnt necessarily mean youre going to have a Hurricane Category three winds, say on the East Coast of florida. But you are going to have tropical conditions that its going to be nasty throughout the latter part of the day here in the state of florida we are of course, looking at the track if you look at the ad am advisory and i think this has been happening probably for the probably the last eight hours. The models are nudging the center of the storm a little bit east. And thats significant when youre talking about tallahassee because if it yesterday, we were looking at an eyewall that was probably just on the western part of the city when you storms hit the northeast part of the storm is usually the most damaging. And so to the extent it is tracking East And Mirroring more of an Ai Dahlia Track rather than a direct hit on Tel Assay that is going to impact the extent of the damage. This area has not had a major Hurricane Hit and quite some time and certainly nobody in recent memory has seen a storm of this magnitude that has hip. So well watch that theres no guarantee that its going to continue on that trend, but we have seen that slight trend. And that could potentially be very impactful. Talking another 30 or 40 miles to the east versus maintaining course or even toggling a little bit west, there will be Debris Either Way obviously, if it hits direct in the tallahassee with the trees that we have here, and its nice, but it will cause a lot of damage we have been kevin and his team have been working with local governments throughout the state, but particularly throughout this region about making sure they have their Debris Contracts ready to go. Theres gonna be a need to get debris out of the roadways. Kevin, his team are going to be helping jared, his team are going to be helping, but then also so with Power Restoration you want to be able to get the power back on the alignment, going to have to access these Power Lines. And that could be more challenging in an area like tallahassee than it would be in areas that may not be as wooded. So those debris, all local governments do your Debris Contracts. Youre gonna get fema reimbursement for this fiscally constrained counties. Weve stepped up at the State Level and help them in the past, but i think you can anticipate that theres going to be a need for some serious debris removal. So so please take the appropriate steps. But as weve said all along, this storm was never projected to make landfall in the Florida Peninsula Gulf Coast. Whether youre talking about sarasota, tampa, some of those areas, but because its such a Big H churning a lot of water. And so youre going to see surge all up and down the West Coast of florida the water is going to rise and that is going to create hazards as well so just because youre outside the cone and i think a lot of those parts on the West Coast of florida are probably outside the cone that does not mean that youre not going to see significant impacts we have overnight had 14 different Tornado Warnings. Theres likely to be more of those throughout today warnings were issued in palm beach, hendry glady, and Collier County now, parts of our state are starting to feel the effects already certainly if youre a North Florida you still have time to x each players got to do it now, you have time to get to a shelter, but you got to do it now, every minute that goes by brings us closer to having conditions that are going to be simply too dangerous to navigate but if you who are in the northern part of the state and you have access and youre in an Evacuation Zone and youve been told to evacuate, you do have time to do it now so do it. But dont wait another six hours, seven hours and say, oh man, this thing looks big and think that youre going to want to go out though, though that will be very hazardous to do that with all of the he evacuation orders. Theres going to be a time and some of that time may have been reached and southern parts of the state where your Local Fisher is going to tell you its too late to Stay Put i dont think weve reached that in Northern Florida yet, but wherever you are if your local em official say that its that its too hazard curtis to go and they usually are better off just hunkering down heed that advice. I know jareds talking about with the folks about the winds. Were looking at the Skyway Bridge is having i dont know if theyve closed it yet, but i think that was imminent. So youre starting to see this. So just listen to your local officials depending on where you are in the state there will become a time in North Florida as the hours pass today, where they may tell you, Stay Put. But but dont put yourself at risk. We have fatalities on the roadways and hazardous conditions. Almost every storm, and those can be avoidable avoided with proper planning. Remember also, were going to Variance Power outages a lot of people use generators and thats, thats great. But please use the generator properly. If you use the generator inside your house, that could kill you, you got to keep the generator outside the house a safe distance from any doors or windows . Cant let the Carbon Monoxide get into your home. So please use the generators appropriately also, in terms of shelters so if you are in an Evacuation Zone, youve been ordered some people just recommended evacuation. Some people may not have been told to, but they look and maybe they feel like they need to get out there shelters available. If you want to look at the shelters available in your particular county, Go To florida disaster. Org backslash shelters. And you will see the options that you have all counties are required to have at least one petfriendly shelter. So please do not leave your pets behind. Make sure that you take them with them. We want to keep our pets safe in addition to our families the division of Emergency Management is partnered with uber. We announced yesterday to provide free rides to shelters for floridians and counties that are under a state of emergency, which is almost all of them at this point. And when you book your ride so so so take advantage of that obviously were reaching the point where thats not going to be an option as the storm gets closer. But i can tell you if youre in tallahassee buren, color of your in some of the Northern Florida. And theres ubers available, you still have time right now to be able to take advantage of that. Lastly, as weve learned and major storms to the greatest dangers are Tree Limbs falling on roofs as well as driving during the storm. Once the Storm Hits, do not go out on the roadways there will be hazardous conditions, do not drive in standing water. Youre going to see It Roadways that are going to be flooded throughout the state of florida. Youre putting yourself at risk if you do that, also, if youre sheltering at your home be aware of the Tree Limbs that are on your property or in adjacent to your home, tried to be in an Interior Room or away from limbs that could fall through the Roof Or Window and cause harm. And we do see fatalities that happen in these storms because of Tree Limbs falling on homes. And you can have a great home that can withstand a category three storm winds. Its a lot more difficult to withstand a Big Tree falling on your roof. So so take a look at that and know that that is a very rare real hazard when it comes to this storm youve been listening to florida governor Ron Desantis speaking here in tallahassee, not far from where i am right now, John Berman here. Of Hurricane Helene, which is right now a category two Storm Strengthening as it moves north and is due to make Landfall Tonight on the Florida Coast as a major hurricane, a category three, maybe even a category four storm what you just heard from Governor Desantis was a warning to the people here in Northern Florida along the big ben. Basically, he said, you still have time to get out, but you have to do it now, heed the warnings from local officials and get out. If you were told to do so. Now is the time along the big Bend Area there could be Storm Surge of 15 to 20 feet that we are told is unsurvivable. That is why the governor is issuing that warning. He also noted that power could be out for some time. He also noted as youre looking at the socalled cone there of where the storm could hit dont just pay attention to the cone this storm is so big, its going to have impacts over the entire Florida Peninsula. Whether it means rain or wind, or that Storm Surge. All right. Cnn is covering this story up and down the coast. Weve got Carlos Suarez and gulfport and Pinellas County. So im going to Go To Allison Chinchar at the Weather Center to get a sense of the very latest forecast, allison and thats right. So it is a category two storm currently churning in the Gulf Of Mexico in the last few frames here, weve really started to get it more of definitive eye develop in this particular storm that shows that it is continuing to strengthen and we anticipate that this storm will continue to strengthen as we go through the rest of the day today, we now have not one but two separate tornado watches one in effect for about twothirds of florida, the other for portions of georgia and south carolina, more of these are likely to come as we go through the next 24 to 48 hours, weve had several Tornado Warnings off and on for both florida and georgia, as well as south carolina. More of those are expected as more of those outer bands begin to creep into to the states the storm is expected to become a major hurricane later on today before making Landfall Tonight near the big bend region, that that point, the forward speed well pick up quite considerably. And what that really means is it means it can make it pretty far inland before its able to weaken back down to a tropical storm. So youre going to have cities that are well away from the ocean that still looking at Hurricane Force winds. And then from there it continues up into portions of tennessee where its just kinda Kinda Hover and thats going to allow lot of rain to get dropped in some of these areas widespread. A lot of these portions of these states are looking at four to eight inches of rain, but some spots not out of the question to pick up ten or even 12 inches for this system finally moves out. We showed you the two tornado watches in effect more likely to come because this entire area you see here has the potential for severe weather. Were talking waterspouts, tornadoes and the potential for damaging winds. Now again, the Flood Threat is really whats going to be widespread and it exists obviously where we have landfall but even imminently after that, you can see the wide swath it stretches into georgia, portions of eastern alabama, as well as the carolinas. I was reading that tallahassee has never actually recorded Hurricane Strength with sustained Hurricane Strength winds is possible. This is the most powerful storm ever to pass over where we are right now. Well, thanks for having me, john. Thats right. We are certainly no strangers to hurricanes here since 2016, we have experienced the impacts of five hurricanes. This helene will be the sixth and she certainly has our full attention. Were very focused here as you as you might imagine and weve been monitoring the systems since its very early stages, and weve been actively preparing our community to best protect them from what is now a very powerful, as you mentioned ill system which we expect will have significant impacts in our community, but were hopeful too that are citizens who again have a lot of experience with storms have heated all of our, all of our guidance on this and the warnings and they have effectuated their plans and again, we are about as prepared as we can be with all of the early Coordination And Communication that has taken place so far. Very soon, though we will be we are bracing for the impact of the storm. Soon thereafter, we will do Damage Assessments and then thereafter we will get about the work of rolling up our sleeves and restoring our community of the challenges here in Leon County and im not sure if people can see behind me, no, not behind me, but but almost everywhere i look big, beautiful trees, live oaks, a feature of tallahassee and this county, but also i have to believe a challenge in a storm like this, thats right, john, i mean, we have told our citizens from very early on, weve advised to prepare for thousands of trees down and literally Hundreds Of Roads blocked and prolonged power outages. If you mentioned, weve not experienced anything like this, although weve had again, very significant experience but at this point in time, again, with just hours to go and not much time to prepare a were advising citizens who havent sought shelter in our shelter who are in manufacturing sure. Homes or Mobile Homes. Weve done a mandatory evacuation from Mobile Homes and any of those folks who have not sought shelter. And one of our seven shelters throughout the community, we are advising that they do so now or do so very, very soon. Again, were almost out of Out Of Time as far as that goes for those people whove i did to stay in their home. Its time to make sure that that home is as buttoned up as it can be, and that people are very mindful of those trees which have been saturated in this rain that youve been experiencing over the last 12 hours or so. A very, very mindful of those trees and down Power Lines. And of course, again, were providing that kind of guidance. We want people to continue to heed the official guidance coming out of the eeoc, which will not only help them protect their families, but will greatly assist us in our Community Response and recovery county administrator. Now, even where it doesnt make landfall, its causing major problems. I want to Go To gulfport in Pinellas County. That is where cnns Carlos Suarez is right now in carlos. You been getting the bands and seeing the water already moved up like where youre standing right now . Thats exactly right. John. Good morning. So in the last hour, Emergency Officials here in Pinellas County have expressed a great deal of concern with the fact that the folks that live in this Evacuation Zone have decided Stay Put and their concern, as you can see around me, is some of the flooding that were already seeing associated with this storm. What youre taking a look at here is the result of High Tide and some of it The Rain that we saw moved through the area overnight. And this morning. And so whats happening here is all of this water is accumulating just inland. And were also keeping a close eye on the bay, which is to the right of me here because that water continues to creep over inland. There is a Beach Volleyball Area thats set up there that is underwater. And so the concern as we go into the into the day is That Even though this hurricane is going to stay to the west of us about 100 miles west of us, and continue to make its way north were still going to see some of that rain. Were still going to see some of the strong winds. And then later this afternoon and into tonight, were still expected to see that forecasted Storm Surge of anywhere between five to eight feet when all of that happens, when you get that wind, youve got The Rain, youve got the Storm Surge, all of that comes together, even though its not a direct hit. Lowlying areas including Gulf Port here in Pinellas County, will no Doubt Flood john, just to give you a little bit of perspective here, i covered Hurricane Ian two years ago. We were here. The Storm Hit just to the south. This flooded last year we came here to cover hurricane idalia. It hit to the north this same area here. You also flooded hundreds of homes were damaged in all of that. So the concern in the next couple of hours and going into tonight is that as this storm continues its trek north offshore from the tampa bay area, were expected to still see some of that flooding and that is why Emergency Officials want folks that live in these lowlying areas to go ahead and move inland. John yeah. Peep people do need to listen those sandbags behind you, carlos, if that water rises much more, they are merely aspirational. Whats your biggest concern at this moment john, its good to be with you and we dont have to do this every year, i think last year i followed carlos and hes just a couple of miles west in gulfport and the biggest concern is exactly what he said that folks that live in those lowlying areas, those zone a Evacuation Zones need to move to shelter and the county has i call for a Noon Cutoff for folks to move to those shelters today. After that, were going to see greater impacts from surge and from when folks really need to move. This is the largest storm in terms of physical size, but also the impact in terms of Storm Surge, five to eight feet it is more than we saw with a dahlia and folks need to move out of the way of that water thats important information. Use gavi, you have till noon, you have til noon. If youre in that area around st. Peter, her Pinellas County, to get to a safe place after that, it asked people if they do decide to stay in their home just as the storm makes greater impact, what kind of services will be available our yossi and weve got our Police And Fire and his folks live to serve. But we dont want to send them out into situations where they life is in danger. We have high Water Rescue vehicles. We dont want to use that capacity if we dont have to, the best thing that folks can do to help out is to move to a safe area. You dont have to move 50 miles away. Just moved to a higher, higher Ground Move out of that zone so that we dont have to risk the lives of our first responders to try to go in and save people we didnt less than an hour impacted by Storm Surge is really unprecedented for st. Pete and Pinellas County and again, you noted you are at this just exactly one year ago talking about this how has the response been from residents who now have been through this a few times and say, you know what . I just dont have the energy. Im going to ride this one out. What are you seeing in terms of the response to your warnings . I think it depends on the experience of particular person if they saw what happened with ian that took an eastward turn and really devastated our neighbors down in the fort Myers Area they see the power of what surge can do. And so i think those folks that have seen that understand the power im surge have taken the responsible action, i think as folks that havent seen that before or see the projections where the storm is 100 miles away from us and headed towards tallahassee. And think were Out Of The Woods where were really not because its Surge Event is going to be over 12 to 36 hours hes going to combine with our tides. And its going to have an impact like weve never seen in these lowlying areas and st. Pete and Pinellas County. So folks need to heed the call from the citys from st. Pete, from the county were asking you to move for your own protection and at some point we will not be able to send help is a good time for you to give people a warning, not just about today, but tomorrow. What do people need to be careful with even when this Storm Passes . Well, folks need to be careful if you dont need to drive, please dont get on the roads after a storm. Youve got down Power Lines dont get in the way of the folks who are trying to restore services for our community. So state and stay in home, shelter in place for their so monitor the media, monitor websites will let you know when its safe to move out, but dont be outside seeing because its a very dangerous time, whether its the Falling Limb or down Power Lines, folks do get hurt or killed after the storm all right. Ive never supported Donald Trump. Im a republican who never supported him. But i wanted to go into this with an open mind and understand what is driving latinos to the polls. And yes listen, theres incredible differences between latinos and latinos are not. Were not all one religion. Were not, you know, not everybody is a social conservative. Theres some people that are progressive and care deeply about gaza but i think the commonality i found is that for latinos, the latino Identity And Heritage is incredibly defining an important and we want to be seen.
