I mean looking at that and were going to hear, i know you had on your show people on the ground there my show also going to talk to some of the residents who are climbing out of this with kids, trying to juggle that with schools being closed, figuring out a place to live, where to get water, food. Im Pamela Brown in washington, and we begin this hour with exclusive new video Into Cnn that will give you more perspective on the scope and the scale of the catastrophe in the southeast and what people are dealing with right now in this very moment. You are looking at the wounds of asheville, North Carolina one of the cities that Helene Hit the hardest. Take a look here. This is the river arts district, just more than a week ago. It was a vibrant, beautiful area until the storm did this and heres a look inside one of the buildings there just a just a complete just a disaster. Inside there is barely any room to walk and nothing is left standing as you see right here and outside fallen trees are bouncing on Power Lines right now. Hundreds of thousands of customers are still without Power Access across the southeast. Were going to keep it right here On Cnn later in the hour. Were going to go live to asheville to talk to the North Carolina national guard and find out how troops are helping people across the state. And moments ago, we learned the Death Toll from the storm has risen to at least 200 people in six states. Right now President Biden is about to arrive in tallahassee. Hell see the damage in that state firsthand. Lets bring in cnns Arlette Saenz in perry, florida, near where Hurricane Helene made landfall a week ago. Arlette what are we expecting to hear from the President President Biden to be landing in florida in just a short while. This is the second day that he is spending devoted to touring these areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. President biden is making his way here to the big Bend Region of florida. We are in perry will here will be landing a little bit later this afternoon. Hurricane helene made landfall just a short distance away from here one week ago today. President biden will be going in directly to this area called keaton beach, which is a residential community that has been devastated by this storm officials saying that maybe 90 of those homes were impacted, potentially destroyed when Hurricane Helene ripped through the state and then continued on through the southeast now, after the president is here hes going to be seeing devastation on the ground. Hell be receiving an operational briefing. He is then heading to the state of georgia. Georgias governor, brian kemp, actually just announced a short while ago that he just spoke with President Biden and Agriculture Secretary Tom vilsack, thanked them for coming to the state and for also the additional counties that have been listed under the disaster declaration. But he did note that the president is likely to hear some frustration from counties who also want to get on that list, so we will see if there is any movement on that front here in florida. It seems unlikely that President Biden will be seeing florida governor ron desantis, who is actually holding a Press Conference a few hours south of where biden will be today. But one thing that the administration has been trying to stress over the past few days is that federal response to this devastating Storm Yesterday President Biden toured via an aerial tour, an area of western North Carolina which has been particularly hit by mudslides, landslides and flooding. And it was there where he said that the community that the federal government would be there for the community for the long haul, not just in this short term. Now, one big question is how the u. S. Government will be able to pay for a lot of this Disaster Relief President Biden has said that he will that the federal government will cover Debris Removal and other Emergency Relief procedures that qualify for all the for states like Georgia Florida and North Carolina as well as Secretary Alejandro mayorkas just yesterday warned that more money will be needed to fund any Disaster Relief. Take a listen. We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting. We do not have the funds. Fema does not have the funds to make it through the season said that he does think that Disaster Relief will need to be passed. Its unclear how much the federal government would be asking for, but also big questions about how soon that could happen as congress is in session at this time. All right. Well, the president will fly over some of the hardest Hit Areas of florida, but on the ground helping to kick start the Recovery Efforts is Team Rubicon. The veteran led humanitarian group is using chainsaws to clear trees off roads, putting tarps on damaged roofs and helping people dig out of their mud covered homes. Arte De La Cruz joins us now. He is the ceo of Team Rubicon arte. Tell us about the work that your group is doing. I mean, just just to see that background where you are, it really tells the story of what youre up against. Yeah, im actually in Sea Ranch down here in pasco county. And this is just one of the presences that we have as a Volunteer Organization across the six states impacted. You know, today were in asheville, North Carolina. But here specifically, you know, residents are dealing with 5 or 6ft of water that is literally flooded. This entire neighborhood and this is just one of many up and down this coast so a lot of work ahead to these communities in rebuilding and you know, doing the things they need to do to get their lives back in order. And we see some cars On The Road next to you. But that is not the situation everywhere, right . There are still some roads that are blocked. And of course, clearing the roads is the most critical work allowing the emergency vehicles, volunteers like you linemen to get through. How challenging is that work for the teams yeah, that work actually started right after landfall and believe it or not, our three Route Clearance teams and they have heavy equipment and chainsaws. You know, they cleared enough debris off of the roads in florida, georgia, south carolina, and now in North Carolina to build up over A Thousand thousand Dump Trucks wow A Thousand Dump Trucks. What does that tell you . So rubicon is expected to be in the Pasco Area through The End of the month, right where you are now. Your group is heading into tennessee and south carolina. This next guest is a Business Owner in western North Carolina. Lets Take A Look at some of these photos from joseph mcelroys 14 Room Motel about 30 miles west of asheville. And Maggie Valley. People were staying there when Helene Hit. Joseph joins us now on the phone. Joseph, first of all, how are you doing how is your family . I understand that you have little kids. Yeah, i have a six year old twins that are you know, are sort of actually treating this as a grand adventure um, but yeah, we we were were now starting to recover and and and things are i think are in Maggie Valley are doing a little bit better than asheville, which is you know, where i work most of the time and cant really go to you say, i have a six year old as well and i can understand and I Cant believe you have two. Wow. Um you know, you say theyre looking at this as a grand adventure, but youre also unsure how to explain to your kids whats really going on in the aftermath of this storm particularly their teacher. Tell us about that and how you plan to speak to them. Well, we just found out yesterday that, um their their teacher, i mean they really love this teacher. I mean, you know, its like a second mom and she drowned in the in the in the, in the storm. And, you know its like, here they are. You know, these wonderful little kids weve been trying to encourage them to treat it like a grand adventure. And now we are facing to tell them that that grand adventure killed their their beloved teacher. You know its like we didnt. We dont know what to do. We havent told them yet. Weve reached out to the school and they actually have not had to really deal with this before. And theyre researching to let the whole class know how to, you know to to deal with this. I mean everybody hears the stories literally in tears. I mean, i, im not somebody really to express, you know, sort of personal emotions online. But i did a post and its, you know, theres lots of people being sympathetic and giving me advice. But, you know its its a, its a hard, Hard Question because how do you not traumatize them you know. Yeah. Yeah i just my heart hurts for you and hurts for that community. And hurts for the teachers family. And just to think about the loss of innocence that will come from you having to tell them that you know, they lost their teacher as you put it, in this grand adventure. And just its just heartbreaking. Um tell us more about, you know, what your community is going through. And the greatest need right now well, you know, theres all over this, all over this, this county has been a tremendous lack of communication. Right. And so we were, you know we were in the dark, for example, there was a nine, a 9 p. M. Curfew in this county. Haywood county. And we did not know about it until a week afterwards. There was just theres no you know, were all live now on the internet and the internets down. And im going to tell you, theres a theres a big reckoning needs to happen with Internet Providers because theyre not being required to have power redundancy, like other communication means happen. And everybodys moving to smart tvs and Everything Else and, you know, when the internet goes out, we we got nothing right . So, i mean and, you know, so everybodys having problems. And so theres lots of people still missing their Loved Ones. Not knowing whether theyre in you know, have been rescued, whether theyre alive or dead or anything like that. So that is the biggest trauma. There is a sort of a psychological trauma thats going on here where people dont know, and its a real its a real. Everybodys gotten used to the internet and its not been here for a week you know, and, and and so we built our lives around it and boom, its gone and the companies that put out these you know, get us into their services, have a monopoly locally for the most part and they dont have power, redundancy and that is a real problem. I think thats such an important point. And just to think, if, you know, i mean, a week on they still dont know people in the community because of that issue. If their Loved Ones are dead or alive and just the psychological trauma as you put it uh, its just hard to wrap your head around the they just figured out about the teacher a week. A week later, you know, its you know, its just, uh, you know its, you know, the communication, uh besides the physical infrastructure and, i mean, theres theres towns like Chimney Rock and marshall that might not come back into existence. Right crusoe. Crusoe, in this this this county has been hit twice, and it is. And it is literally just devastated people there are out of their their lives. I mean, theyre out of where, where they live and their businesses and Everything Else. Maggie valley i mean, we had the worst Flood Weve had in 500 years. Uh, well, 100 years, um but, you know, we we we we are surviving it. I mean, theres lots of mud and lots of things, but were not were not dramatically the infrastructure is the rest of this county and the rest of the counties around us and especially asheville, you know and, you know, you dont Know Asheville is going to come back from that. I know, and its so sad ive been to asheville, wiped out yeah. Go ahead. You know, the whole the whole vibe of asheville is that sort of its quirkiness they like to say theyre weird. Well essentially all that was around the riverfront, the downtown, the Biltmore Village Area and all those are wiped out. So the heart of asheville is gone right now. And its devastating. I love asheville, ive been there. Its got so much charm and character. And just to think how halloween just wiped out towns like asheville, and you have to wonder how in The World are they going to rebuild. That is why were going to stay on top of this story. Not just now, but but moving forward as well. Joseph our hearts are with you and your family and those two precious six year olds and as you as you figure out how youre going to break this devastating news to them that their beloved teacher died drowning from Hurricane Helene, thank you for your time today. For these, you know, individuals, you know, here in that last interview and what they are experiencing with the breadth of the line, its i think its important to understand that its not isolated to the coast of florida. It extends a significant amount of geographic expanse and, you know, impacts millions of people. So this is going to take months and months. And, you know, one of my biggest fears is, you know right now were above the fold in the news. And our biggest worry is you talk about Funding And Attention is, you know, once it falls below the attention of the nation we worry that organizations like ours and others, you know, around the country that are doing work, you know, once you fall off attention, you begin to see a Drop Off in Funding And Volunteering is going to be incredibly important. Yeah, i think thats an important point and why we are vowing on this show to stay on top of it, continue to shine a spotlight in my Home State of kentucky. I will tell you, i was out there monday. Um, it is it is bad. And the areas are vast. I would like to give some context. This is, um, you know, some some steep and tough terrain and the lines of communication whether its Road Networks Sales or power has been Cut Off to a lot of villages and towns. Um, so we are in the process of making communication with those as well. I would also like to say that um, you know, we have uh, a lot of soldiers and airmen that are out there pushing commodities right now in the last couple of days, we have pushed over 1 Million pounds of commodities to the region. And a lot of those commodities are being airlifted in just due to the fact that the Road Systems are Cut Off um, so we are making a push to in every county thats been affected and we will continue to push further into these counties as the roads and network systems open up. There have been these reports of people being evacuated by the national guard, but then having to return because there were no routes or access out of the area. What are people supposed to do in that situation yes, maam. Thats a great question so the national guard, uh itself has rescued over 1400 people. And from every single county in North Carolina. Uh, like you said, the Road Systems have been Cut Off. We take them to a point of distribution, and we let the red Cross And Emergency management, uh, deal with relocation of the personnel we pull out. I would like to say also that our commodities are being flown in, but this is a dynamic mission for them. Weve had several examples where we will take first responders into a community. We will airlift those citizens out of the community and provide commodities along the way. And weve been doing that every single Flight Mission we have. All right. Congressman, thanks for being here. Are you concerned that an israeli response could trigger an all out conflict in the Middle East well, pam i would kind of change the premise of the question there. I think we already have an all out conflict in the Middle East. And frankly i mean, that started october 7th. But i think even before that, iran has been confident over and over again that there will not be any consequences to iran itself for unleashing its proxies in a Reign Of Terror all over the Middle East and for its stated goal of destroying israel. Iran is behind hezbollah, behind hamas, behind the houthis that have virtually shut down international shipping through the Straits Of Hormuz and what i would love someone to ask biden, harris blinken, jake sullivan, is what consequences has iran itself, not its proxies . Has iran itself suffered . And we havent even started talking about the soldiers, the american soldiers that have been killed by its proxies in in iraq and those hundreds of attacks or the fact that they are actively trying to assassinate a leading president ial candidate. So the bottom line pam, is iran has gotten away with it over and over again and even launching hundreds of drones and missiles, a few months ago, there were Administrations Strategy has been to Pressure Israel rather than to pressure iran. Theyve appeased iran. Theyve given them 100 Billion in Sanctions Relief and theyve used that funding not only to attack israel, but to attack ukraine. How do you know providing that funding providing missiles and drones . Whats that . I want to be specific on this because youre saying they appease iran. Thats a big claim and that they release all these funding that the administration says was. Are you talking about the humanitarian funding through qatar . Is that what youre talking about . And i just because youre saying thats being used in this war, and i want to just be specific on the evidence you have. Well, sure yeah, absolutely uh, iran sells 90 of its illicit Oil Sales to china. President trump was very clear to china. Stop buying from iran or you will not be able to buy from us. What he meant were secondary sanctions through executive order. The House Of Representatives passed secondary sanctions on chinese buyers refiners, shippers of iranian oil that are bringing tens of billions into its coffers, that its using to fund these wars. Its been sitting with Chuck Schumer since december of 2023. So if the administration wanted to clamp down on Irans Currency and on irans foreign reserves, which have ballooned from a little under 10 Billion to over 100 Billion just in the last three years, i mean look, it is clear that iran is flush with cash and its using it to fund these wars. And further, pam, in 2019, we had a strong reporting that hezbollah and hamas were complaining that they were out of money, that they were complaining that the money shipments and the Weapons Shipments from iran had dried up. So it is a very clear line that iran is behind all of this. But the administration has done what they have. They removed the Terrorist Designation on the Houthis Right out of the gate. They say theyve put sanctions in place on iran which is true. But then they provide waivers to china, to others to iraq, to russia and essentially put more holes in these sanctions. And they dont enforce them. So it has been all part of their fiction that they can get back into the iran deal. But lets remember, who are they negotiating through to get into back into the iran deal they were negotiating through the russians of all people. So this has been a failed policy, and i just wish they would take a step back and shift back to the core of the problem here. Theyre trying to deal with the symptoms, not the virus, which is in tehran all right. And as you know, those in the biden administration and supporters of biden would say trump pulling out of the iran deal caused a whole host of problems. And, you know gave iran ammunition to move forward with its nuclear Weapons Program thats that criticism, thats that side. I do want to go to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. Before we go, House Speaker Johnson says existing disaster funds wont be enough to help victims impacted by the Storm Dhs says it is running out of fema funding. Does Congress Need to come back for a special session to resolve this . You know pam, i would be open to that. But i would also point out that the congress just passed with a continuing resolution 20 billion. I have issue with that as well in terms of how its spent. But certainly we need to keep fema fully funded. I would also point out that according to an investigation out of the house, mayorkas has spent 2. 7 billion in terms of its Housing And Assistance to illegal immigrants. And i got to tell you, my own constituents in florida, the people of asheville, are really scratching their head that theyre hearing from the Dhs Secretary. Theyre out of money to help them, but they still have money to help people who have come to this country illegally. I think thats wrong on the face of it. And mayorkas has the authority to shift that money around internally in in an emergency situation, which right now absolutely is. And then separately, we have Fort Bragg. We literally we have Camp Lejeune Brigades Worth of helicopters there active duty. And my question is why is the pentagon dragging their feet . This needs to be a Berlin Airlift Type moment to authorize those active duty to help the national guard. And theyre limited resources. So you dont think that thousand that they need soldiers is enough . That biden has approved . I think it was just i think that was a week. Remember, that was a week too late. And ill point out the criticism of President Bush just two days after katrina, two days. This is a week now and the entire 82nd airborne division, or at least a good part of it, was sent to help in katrina theyre right Down The Street at Fort Bragg fort liberty. Weve had weve had protests. Weve had protests that have exploded into riots all over this country, including in minneapolis including in portland. So i dont think you necessarily draw the causality. But at The End of the day, yes, yes, we should have peaceful transfer of power in this country and you will certify and you will certify the results of every state certifies the results. If it is a free and fair election, absolutely as did the democrats. A free and fair election mean 2020 was a free and fair election. And members of congress tried to overturn the results. How much does all of that factor into a longer life . Well, i got to say, first of all, i love this segment as well because we got so many stories like that. Its just wonderful to hear from people. I think theres two things. First of all, the walking very important. Youve probably heard this phrase, Pamela Sitting is the new smoking. I think one of the greatest benefits of walking is that youre not sitting at the point that you walk. Theres been a lot of studies done on this 7000 steps a day at least. They say is sort of a sweet spot in terms of getting those sorts of benefits. So you know, getting out there and just moving in that regard is really important. The second thing, just the attitude, the optimism that i think shes describing there. Are optimistic, it not only feels good, but it changes our biology. And he said, we all need to look for things that lift us up and i just, i really think thats why he lived as long as he did. Right. Um and, you know, you mentioned the difference go ahead. No i just said i think that really makes a difference. I think these things are hard to study, but absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. I mean, thats a sweet story. I think it makes a difference. Yeah. Because there was there was really nothing else that explained him living until he was 88, right . I mean he just given, you know his Health History and the way he lived so much of his life. And yet he was, you know, living longer than so many of his friends.
