Showtime is fast approaching for a beloved local movie theater that was closed for more than a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Coolidge Corner Theater closed about 13 months ago. During that time, they've offered virtual screenings, outdoor events and offered their space for rent, but the theater hasn't yet reopened for public screenings. On Thursday, the theater leaders announced plans to start selling tickets on May 7 for the first step of a phased reopening that will begin on May 13. Capacity will be limited to 15%, or 68 seats, inside the theater's Moviehouse 1. "All tickets will be sold online with reserved seating," they said. "Guests will be required to wear face masks at all times and concessions will not be available for public screenings for the time being."Showings will include a 4k restoration of "Do the Right Thing" and 35mm screenings of "Vertigo"; "2001: A Space Odyssey"; "Top Hat" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Theater leaders said they anticipate first-run features will begin showing in June. Moviehouse 2 will be reserved for party rentals. Just a few weeks to the pandemic and the theater's closure, the Coolidge Corner Theater was the site of a romantic proposal that went viral. It was where filmmaker Lee Loechler popped the question to his high school sweetheart during her favorite movie — the Disney classic "Sleeping Beauty."
