“There has been some damage to some of the dahlias when people have been climbing up the stalks and hanging off them,’’ he said.
“It is quite frustrating for us because you are engineering it for weather, wind and rain, but you can never account for stupid people.”

The work would involve replacing parts broken by the vandals and reinforcing critical parts of the sculpture, Veitch said.

Council head of urban regeneration, design and heritage Carolyn Ingles said the repairs and strengthening work would cost about $8000 and would be completed in early May.
