Chief at the hill. Last weeks High School Shooting in parkland, florida, where do you think of issue will go in Congress Returns . It will be on the front burner. The president has put out some proposals, some supported by the nra and a few not. We have seen marco rubio change guns in thes on wake of the fortis shooting. Speaker paul ryan and Mitch Mcconnell will have to answer questions about what now . What kind of Gun Legislation will you move . There is a bipartisan proposal sponsored by senator john cornyn and backed by senator chris murphy, has support on both sides of the aisle. It is supported by the nra. It would increase the system of communication on background checks and. Sending beat and sending between various Government Entities information to the fbi, which critics say needs to be shorter. But critics will not be happy with that. They want stronger background checks. Senator pat toomey of pennsylvania said he will revive his old bill that failed a few wake of the the connecticut shooting. I think it is something that congressional leaders will have to deal with front and center. Remember, the florida movement, the student movement, which marched to tallahassee, that is coming to washington next month. This issue will be either the dominant one for much of march. Let me ask you about the momentum building for legislation, first starting in a series of hill headlines concerning with governor rick scott saying that he is bucking the nra on age restrictions on new gun proposals. Than their supportive congressman congress Carlos Cabello on the bump stock legislation. You have covered this issue for some time in washington. Have you ever seen a time where potentially some legislation on guns and significant legislation on guns can be enacted . The only time that is comparable was after the sandy hook tragedy when president obama took on, the National Rifle association in one of the biggest lobbying battles i have seen in my time in the nations capital. The nra won that. That was a Democraticled Senate at the time. There was a bipartisan proposal, but it was voted down. This is somewhat different. The movement seems to be dominating the news more so than back then. I think the momentum of shifting positions on whether it is rubio or other republicans sank, well, we need to rethink this, that is something that you didnt see after sandy hook. Certainly the president has been the one he also wants to 21. E the age to that is a nonstarter for the nra, which strongly backed trump. Rick scott is also thinking about running for the senate against bill nelson. His shift is also very significant, because Public Opinion has changed. Certainly, this wouldnt this movement in footer has been quite [indiscernible] lets turn to the issue of border security. They had met failed. To move forward on their legislation. There is word that the Bob Goodlatte bill is gaining republican support. Where do you think things stand . Things are kind of at a standstill. The conservatives in the house, they want to pass the goodlatte bill. Speakere spoken with ryan and his deputies to whip up support for it. But its still under 100. They havent had a lot of success. That doesnt mean there isnt more support out there. But the fact it cant get to 100 to 200 scope to 200 cosponsors, they have a lot of work to do to pass this year. The immigration debate in the senate dominated before they left town. Mitch mcconnell indicated that that would be the only week that was the week to get something done. There were various proposals, four of them. They were all voted down. There is a bit question of what now . You have the march 5 deadline. But the enforcement that the trump and trump administers wants to do it far as deportations, that is on hold because of the courts. Until we get a new court ruling, nothing can happen. Democrats will talk a lot about getting a deal all the way up to the funding deadline of march 23. I just dont think youre going to see another shot down. Democrats lost the pr battle last time. I dont think they will shutdown the government. But we shall see. The political divide in se hill headlines democrats have totally abandoned dock. Senator schumer responding saying step up and lead on guns and immigration. Let me ask you one last thing about the status of where the budget stands. We are in month away from a budget deadline. They agreed to the twoyear funding measure. What happens happen between now and march 23 . They do have the blueprint, which was a big deal. Basically agreeing on the spending caps and what you will spend on various things. But now you actually have to pass the appropriations language that puts it into play. Because they had the blueprint, i think it will be easier for them to do. But immigration is intertwined with this. Certainly, you have democrats, many of whom are thinking about running for president in 2020. They are not supporting any type of appropriation bill unless it has immigration. The fact that schumer and trump are fingerpointing is just another indication of why a deal is not going to happen anytime soon. Editorinchief with the hill. Thanks for the update. Thanks, bill.
