Gary was 63 years old, when he shouldnt have had a care in the world. When he was financially secure and had a warm loving3 family d dozens of friends. Boy love them all. Yet comprehensively, when he seemingly did not grasp the total his absence would have on those who love him. What made you decide to tell that story. Is obviously a very difficult personal story. But as that first month went on, i realized i had a public platform. I feltfo it was critically important to elevate the discussion about Mental Health issues. Suicide in particular because frankly, i think were close to ju epidemic of it. And i just it was important to do. It was my decision of taking my position and elevating a discussion. How does the federal government doing dealing we put the issues that only the suicide but the Mental Health issues behind it. Boy have to do better. Mental Health Coverage is really inadequate. The resources, boy know boy have chhoolchildren who are affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences who are not being addressed at all. Women of 60, are the Fastest Growing segment of people committing suicide, whiteman. Boy know about veterans and lgbt and youth in particular who are very much affected but it is also no boundaries. I really feel strongly that we have to spend s, boy have to trt Mental Health the way boy do physical health. W boy dont do a good enough job we put physical health but boy need to really need to elevate the Mental Health aspect. So the government money that gets allocated to the services. What should go to Mental Health and counseling. There not enough, there is some funding including from pennsylvania from some states, for community Mental Health clinics. D one stopd essentially shop. These are for people who date need diagnosis and treatment and followup care. Its a Pilot Program. Its not been adopted nationally. I am working on some legislation that we have not yet introduced. Its not finalized yet. I think boy havece to really increase the access and make it more affordable, makece sure tht it has priority. Does the Affordable Care act offer any avenues. It does, it requires parity between Mental Health and physical health. Studies have shown that it has not actually happen or implement it. Argus does we put this until 830 talking about Mental Health legislation and those surrounding issues. If you want answer questions about it, call or text us at 212 7488000. The tenth leading cause of death is about a hundred and 29 a day. The statistics you decided are correct. You know in 2017, 7000 people died by their own hands. Boy know the veterans are dying at record rates. From suicide. The other area that we havent touched on yet that is really been affected are kids on College Campuses. One of the things that i havee sponsored and would like to work on further, is bringing greater Mental Health care to students who are often for the first time away from home, maybe dont know anybody else at school and the former support system is gone. Were also seeing rising numbers of suicide on College Campuses and that is tragic. When it comes to effort from Mental Health and counseling for those who would consider it. Is this bipartisan inin nature d effort to make a bipartisan . One of the most gratifying, the shame out off my own experience, i was the bipartisan across the aisle overtures from some of my republican colleagues who expressed problems that had happened in their own families and communities. When i went back home to my even right after i gave the speech, i had so much outrage from people that where suicide had affected their lives they never felt they could talk about it. A prominent member of our Community Back home, only that his mother committed suicide but nobodyom knows. We need was younge, boy. Stories like that need to be told. Not necessarily by identifying the person, im happy to be the public face of this issue. Sigma has to go away. That was really a big part of why did the floor speech. If you dont have the public platform, and you talk about ,hat happened in your family its just a isolated situation it will never happen in my family. I felt it wasas a very important story to tell. Lets work on something together, that story customer. I am we put you, boy really have to work on middle healthcare. It often comes down to a matter of funding. Thats generally the area where boy have disagreements. But there seems to be an willingness and a desire to work on these issues. Is there a dollar figure two in mind. Im not yet in a position to tell you that. Working on that. Boy have caller from california. February, you are on. Good morning, i was calling in because i have experience we put both sides of suicide. Ive attempted suicide in my life. I have also had to friends commit suicide. I know what its like not to feel like you are worth anything. I noticedg. Like to feel like i could not make a difference in anybodys life if i did i. I know, sorry, i also know that when my two friends killed themselves, there was that when its. I should have and i couldve, i just know that i didnt want to make anybody feel that way but sometimes it just feels like life is is it too heavy. I empathize we put you. I was in the same position and still am. Constantly question both of when he couldve done more. I have made it my business to learn a lot about things that people who surround people who might be suicidal. What you can say, the appropriate way to approach them to talk to them. As not to ask them open ended questions but very specific. Are you feeling suicide. Are you making plans. In your case i hope you know reaching out to people. I hope you have a support network. If you dont, there are suicide hotlines at a really strongly encourage you to call. They can help. Those people are highly trained. They really want to help you. From pennsylvania, this is been set. Good morning, this is the topic that i am very passionate about and currently going through. In 1998, i was hit by a drunk driver while i was walking. I have chronic pain, im not a surgical candidate. But at caught up in the soviet opioid. I suffer we put chronic pain everyday. And major depression. We put mike tcp doctrine my Mental Health doctor, i know why i hear why i dont. Then i go to that doctor and why is my psychiatrist giving me so many problems about anxiety medicine. Its a pencil and never had any problems we put it. Genetically have been cleared. No records. Then they tell me you have to go talk to them about it. Why cant these two doctors get together and do whats best for me because you can have the best people on the suicide hotline but im telling you once you reach your breaking. And you reach out to your congressman and your doctors and everybody here in pennsylvania, one is left. H if i was a dog, somebody wouldve put me to sleep a long time ago. I hear the desperation in her voice. I will say that this is exactly why i think boy need a one stop Mental Health care shopping. Is it too many people talk about the fact that they go to their primary care provider and they want them to see at Mental Health care provider and that person was you to see a psychiatrist for medication. Its essentially three different appointments in three different places in three different times. Its difficult. Then there doesnt seem to be any kind of communication between the providers. Im we put you completely. Also we do mention chronic pain, my beloved gary had chronic pain. I am very aware of how difficult that is in the worst part is that nobody can see it. Only you can feel it. So i think the feeling of being alonein is so much. Its not like a broken leg. You are not in a wheelchair. So people often i think, question both of it reallyis exists. That contributesat to the feelig of loneliness. Billy im we put you. I really feel for you. Keep working on finding a solution. Sometimes chronic pain cant get get rid of but the depressive aspects of it can be. Cleveland ohio, this is tammy. I just wanted to make a comment, boy had just lost our son in december. Hope 2018, like to bring up the fact on how suicide also ties into addiction. Untreated on Mental Health issues, and the addiction, my son ultimately didnt have any drugs in his body at the time oo his death. But boy have thought for years to get the diagnosis. During an addiction, Addiction Treatment they claim to help we put the mentalea health. People are falling through theck cracks big time. Thats what happened to my son. When he felt like there was nothing else when he could do. When he was beyond help. Thought. At when he because they were not addressing his Mental Health issue, it was like a face in the crowd. Many people, who are very addicted, to opioids and painkillers and other forms of drugs are almost committing this low forum of suicide. Both of consciously or unconsciously. And often theyre trying to get out of that vicious cycle of addiction. These people to a complete feeling off desperation. Thats why adjust and boy have just got to integrate are different kinds of healthcare. Addiction is the physical problem. Its also a Mental Health issue. Boy got to integrate those and treat them together. So the people not being shuttled around. My heart goes out to you for your loss. It really does. I can imagine his mother having lost a child to suicide. You spoke about the Pilot Program in his mania. Tell us a little bit more about how this can work can be applied on a larger scale. The best of my knowledge, by bringing providers on the same roof r so people literally, is onestop. Intake all of the way through treatment. Its a very limited program so far. Really like to see it expanded. It does depend on federal funding. A handful of states have it so far. Pennsylvania has recorded Great Results we put it. We put god to make it accessible to more people. Nothing a lot of people dont even know its out there. I really think that has to be the solution because as the powers have demonstrated. One of the greatest greatest forms of frustration and it is is it too easy, im not blaming Healthcare Providers but is it too easy forum to say i want you to go see a psychologist and psychologist as you i need you to go see a psych right psychologist. The patient is the one in the middle. When he really needs the guidance. But there is no, no one there coordinating all of the treatment. This is from baltimore, maryland. Go ahead. Were just going around in circles. I wish you had the statistics, all kinds of issues. [inaudible conversation] i bet you in the black community, boy have all of these issues. Its like the whites cannot deal we put stress, now the kids, when avenue and also. [inaudible conversation] so call her, what would you like our guest to address. It is so easy, so much of my job, now im on medication because im all stressednt out. S okay, color color some communities deal we put it better than others. But the other thing is i think what you know staying is that you dont see suicide as much in your community but i would venture a guess that there is a lot in the way of Mental Health issues. Yesterday boy had a hearing the Labor Committee about Adverse Childhood Experiences. Children are going to school who have problems and they got it. It was incarcerated, gun violence around them, their parents divorced, they are experiencing things that will cause Mental Health issues forum. These aree the kind of things that we have to address. Every community has a different set of circumstances but there are no boundaries or Mental Health care issues. Are those we put economically stressed, hard it is the help forum. Not enough. The zoe that is what boy know for sure. Mental health care is extremely expensive. People who are fortunate enough to have it in their insurance policies, it is most often covered at a lower reimbursement rate. Many dont have it in their policies at all. One of the things boy are working on is creating a bill where people could have, a qualifying life if it, lets say a death in the family or partner who committed suit suicide or whatever it may bite, that would concentrate a life if it for Health Insurance purposes. Then they could add on the Mental Healthal Care Coverage ty need. Its not currently available. It a democrat from for those of you in theea eastern and central time zones, couple of other topics before boy let you go, boy just shame back from august recess, what kind of things didt you hear about. Particularly as the house gets back into session. When i go back to my district, i spent a lot of a lot of time, first of all i have hours where i am just meeting we put a series of constituents on all sorts of issues. Whatever they may be. They are particularly enjoyable and informative. I also visit any fracturing his facilities. My district is an advanced manufacturing high district. The issues boy talk about, they are w primarily trade and tarifs and the lack of workforce. Boy need to work harder in developing our workforce and getting enough employees for these great employers who are frankly could be contributing greater to our issues. Where the president push of a new round of tariffs against china passed a two week deadline. Ultimately what you think about that. And the way the president is approaching tariffs overall. Particularly we put your constituents. Manufactures and businesses need certainty. Boy may have pushed out the terrace for a couple of weeks, thats just another layer of uncertainty. Im hearing from democrats and irrevocably republicans a lot. Concern about a lack of a strategy. Concern about creating policy by tweet. They wake up every morning not knowing what to expect for their business. That has created a real sense of uncertainty, concerns, and it has to change. Boy need a specific trade policy that is well articulated andnd thought out. This is carolyn in los angeles, california. High representative, thank you so much for what you are doing. This is incrediblywh important. The seem to be dealt we put on a National Loophole. But i like find out is what is the best way for us to find out if there are bills that you know putting forward on a National Loophole that weekend support and find out more information. The is the easiest way is to search congress. Gov. I would also encourage you to look out my website as well as your own members website. Reach out to your member of calm congress. I dont know what part of california, doesnt matter but there are some very fine legislators in california. Reach out directly. Boy all listened to her constituents very closely. I get an almost daily roundup of what boy are hearing from people who call us and write to us. They expressed their concerns. Boy are back in our district a week every month and weekends. While were in dc, its really important that that we hear from our people back home. Boy strongly encourage you to call your legislature yourself. This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. Pete please feel free to reach out to us. Remind my office that you called it on cspant and you have some things that you want to talk about. Will hear from denise in lansing michigan next. Hi, i lost my significant other tree months ago. Its devastating me. I just want to crying, people name of the book that itself me. Its called understanding your suicide grief by ellen wolf. It has been absolutely wonderful to read. Its also going to be a five k walk in lansing. Its put on by a fp. Org. Its a Suicide Prevention organization nationwide. I want people to know they can get involved. Maybe therell be a five k or something going on. In their area. Walks around the country are happening later this month. I am participating in one myself. They do a great job and i havera met we put them, they are wonderful people. Incredible caring and concerned. Thank you for highlighting that. Thank you for mentioning the book. I havent been hurting about that one. My heart goes out to you. There is a National Suicide lifeline. Is that federally or private. If youre interested in that. Your next, go ahead. Yes sir, i am calling because i would like to know if people suicidal, should have an appointment to be monitored. People getting together and i think you know one step ahead of yourself. One of the biggest problems always identifying who is suicidal. Thats where friends and family and work colleagues can really be so important. Even in people to observe changes in behavior. To observeer people used to want to go out after work and no longer do. Its really important for all of us to keep an eye and the people around us. Reach out to them. Nine times out of ten, somebody was suicidal its not going to be wearing a billboard or telling people around him or her that they feel that way. I think its really back on the rest of us to reach out to them. In a telltale sign put in those kind of those instances. There are signs, people used to like to do things socially. They started sleeping erratically. Sleeping during the daytime hours rather than nighttime hours. Unrelated to his Work Schedules and that kind of thing. People just become increasingly recent goose. A big tell tale sign is if anybody talks about it. I would be better off dead and less of a burden on my family if i werent here. Those are really significant statements. From ohio, sally is next. I have a question. What you think that there is still a stigma about mental illness. It makes people who have depression or anxiety or some kind of problem like that, they are afraid to talk about it. So theo need to become more withdrawn. Your kind of pushed aside. When he will want to be around you anymore you get the feeling. You hit the nail on the head. Thats exactly what i gave the floor speech that i did at the beginning of the stick segment. There is a stigma. Not only does the person affected not want to talk about it or his or her family members. They dont want to talk about it. Its because of the stigma. This goes back generations. Boy got us change our thinking on this. Boy got to recognize that it is something over which a person doesnt have any control. Nobody chooses to be depressed. Nobody chooses to be suicidal. They should be treated like a physical illness. Boy dont shame people who have cancer boy should not shame people who have Mental Health issues. Im we put you on hundred percent on that. One more call, connecticut this is carol. Ti good morning, im calling because i wonder what can be done for someone who is in the same position i am. For five years, i have been in horrible and terrible pain. Nothing the doctors can do seem to make my life worthwhile. I just wondered, what can be done for people in my position and i know i there are many. I dont of the details of course, but i will say this. If your pain is at the point where youve actually thought about ending your life, i really strongly recommend that you see hospitalization. I dont mean to alarm you or make it seem worse but there are some conditions that simply cannot be dealt we put on we put the pill or a couple of pills a day and you leave the doctors office. If your situation is that bad, i really think that its incumbent on you to seek that yourself. I wish i had done it for my partner. I wish i i had pushed him in tht direction. One more question. T a tweak from someone staying obviously someone needs help but will get it. A lot of people deny the need for help. My experience has led me to believe that more pushing is necessary. It iss so easy for the person wo is afflicted. To say no i am fine i dont need it. Because they also feel shame about it. If you know on the other side of it, if you are the person who was around the person, i hate to say it but it is your job to force them. Obviously, you cant force everything and you cant involuntary commit 70 that went out a court order. You can absolutely not let up. I guess i would say, dont let up.
