Mr. Kaplan, as coronavirus affected your business . Yes, peter. Unfortunately, it has. Weve been holding on as long as we could but it looks like starting tomorrow we will be closing down all six stores that we have in the miami area and trying to move our sales online and encourage people to buy at our website. This is happening, i believe, across the country with independent bookstores everywhere. And like normally happens in the bookstores we are very representative of whats happening with Small Businesses. There are many, many thousands of found thousands of Small Business people who are suffering the same way we are. Mr. Kaplan, are you doing this because the state of florida has mandated it or because youve seen such a drop in foot traffic and sales that its a necessity . Well, couple of reasons while we are doing it. One is that at this point with the mandates that have come through and the guidance from the cdc about people not gathering in places where there are more than just a few people we feel its our responsibility to heed those warnings. Ironically, the thing that makes independent bookstores so great which is that it is a gathering place. Its a place where communities come together and thats not one of the big liabilities we have. And so in an attempt to help, you know, flatten out that curve, as they say, we are closing our stores. What about author events . Have you had a lot of cancellations prior to the closing of your stores and go ahead. Im sorry. Weve had 30, 40 author cancellations starting a couple of weeks ago, people were canceling. Weve had lots and lots of cancellations. Some very big names authors that we expected to have a large turnout for, as well as smaller debut authors. Its having an impact all across publishing as well. Imagine being a young author and this is your first book coming out and it comes into the world right now and its a very, very difficult situation for the literary community. Have you thought about doing online videos with these authors . Yes, that is something that we are exploring and publishers are exploring it. We are exploring it. I also have a podcast call the literary lives and it will continue in which i interview authors. I was usually doing what authors coming here but i will do remote interviews as well so we will try to keep everything alive as much as we can in the spirit of the store alive online through Facebook Live in through instagram and through our channel youtube as well as our website. Mr. Kaplan, how long to think thank you will be closed . Thats a really good question that i wish i had the answer to but what we are announcing is that we will reassess every two weeks. Basically, march 31 we will look at it and see where we are then. We will then see if theres a chance to open. I suspect that this will impact, not only by ms. Us, but Small Businesses everywhere for many, many months to come. Even if we do get open and weve only been open the last week with very minimal business. People just dont want to go out. I think that probably until a vaccine is found in people feel secure theres always going to be that insecurity and gatherings. To shut down your restaurant earlier or is that shutting down as well tomorrow . The restaurant is shutting down tonight. Actually, that is the one thing but the state has mandated that restaurants will only be open for takeout. But that is not happening too much either. I have friends in the Restaurant Business and i think people are staying away from that too. People are hunkering down. Booktv has worked with mitch kaplan for years. My guess is you are quite concerned about the employees of those six stores. That is the key thing. Thats one of the reasons i stayed open as long as i did to keep my employees working. Most people, its been said that most people work paycheck to paycheck and most Small Businesses work revenue day to revenue day. You know, if, in fact, there is no revenue coming into Small Businesses than there isnt much money to pay employees. If nothing is happening so, i have kept my employees on as long as i can and we will keep their Health Insurance going and we will try to protect them as much as we can and will will lobby i know the american booksellers are lobbying with the government and they are starting to bail certain things out but they pay close attention to the Small Businesses and the people they employ, the people on the frontline. Mitchell kaplan is also a cofounder of the miami book fa fair. Mr. Kaplan, is there any talk yet about the Miami Book Fair or not happening november. No. We have not gotten to that point yet. I hope we dont have to. I hope by then you know there is a modicum of caution or a modicum of that there is enough room for people to gather cautiously in a book fair setting because, as you know peter, you been to our book fair and its so meaningful to the city and to the county. Weve never had to cancel the book fair completely when youre we had a hurricane coming so we canceled the street fair but we had all the authors there. If we did cancel it would be the first time in close to 40 years that we have canceled.
