Ōhariu stream floods entire gorge, leaving trail of devastation in its wake

A resident of Takarau Gorge Rd called the flash floods “quite devastating”.
The council had finished putting up a retaining wall between the river and the road about five months ago, but the engorged stream cascaded over the top and left the tarmac of the road cracked and displaced.
“We were warned that it does get blocked at various times of the year, but never expected it would come this close to the Makara end of Takarau Gorge Rd,” they said.
MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr said Saturday brought a once-in-decade rainfall. Hataitai received 78mm in 12 hours, and Lower Hutt recorded 84mm.
