I STARTED OUT AS A MIDDLE CHILD: Thanks for the memories

The last year I taught high school freshman English, I had the brilliant idea to teach a unit called “Creative Me.” For days, I worked on it, gathering articles, books, music, and art supplies. At the end of which time, I realized this was not going to work with my kids. So, I punted and ran with another idea that I called, “The Me Nobody Knows.”
The kids had to bring to the table a poem that showed who they were, a song (to play) whose lyrics reflected what they wanted to say to the world, a photo of any piece of art that spoke to them, and a brief, three-paragraph story telling the rest of us who they really were.
